Audio-Technica (headphones): review, models, characteristics, reviews

The Japanese manufacturer offers both universal lines of headphones and specialized ones that are aimed at certain categories of consumers. Design features, technical characteristics, proprietary technologies and materials used make the brand’s products always in demand, regardless of choice. You will learn about the distinctive advantages of different models from our review.

Music lover's joy

All models included in the W series, Air Dynamic, Art Monitor, are designed specifically for audiophiles. The latest line is monitor headphones. Audio-Technica made them more powerful, enhanced the bass and did everything to make operation comfortable. Interesting models have been released with the “W” index that preserve the Japanese style and have ear cups made of Japanese cherry and walnut wood. This option is considered very expensive.

Air Dynamic includes open headphones with a special design. Their models can be found both in the expensive and mid-range segments.

How I fell in love with the sound of the ATH-M50x

The ease of wearing would be worth nothing if it weren't for the good sound. Audio-Technica's idea to release the most universal headphones with smooth sound (without any accents) turned out to be incredibly successful.

It could be called inexpressive, if not for one thing: this is exactly how good monitor headphones should sound. You hear what the entire team that created the musical composition intended.

Today, while performers and labels are crushing music lovers with a sound race, turning compositions into a suppressed crackle of instruments with increased volume, “overwhelmed” models with raised bass, overwhelmed highs and a flat middle are popular among people. Hip-hop bombs like this - no more needed.

Contrary to this, Audio-Technica ATH-M50x sound full-bodied with any material, at any volume and correctly reproduce even the most complex compositions. It is in these headphones that you begin to understand the work of a sound engineer and the nuances of sound tuning. And what a pleasure the ATH-M50x give in such work!

There is only one problem: if something is not in the composition you are listening to, then it will not appear there. Look at the frequency response:

But you will hear everything that is there until the last note. Nothing is impossible for them: they can also play complex symphonic compositions with many transitions in volume, saturation, and speed; allow you to parse any mix with an infinity of tracks; They easily separate the double bass from the drums, and with proper skill they will help you hear the desired instrument of the folk ensemble.

This is exactly the case when you trust your passport data. The ATH-M50x faithfully reproduces sounds from 15 to 28,000 Hz. If you don't hear it, you will feel it. This honesty is worth a lot, because it allows you to listen to uncompressed sounds - for example, full-length recordings of wildlife.

Fans of low frequencies will absolutely not like them. The first time. But the headphones interact extremely correctly with any sound modifications (for example, an equalizer), without distorting it and when trying to seriously overwhelm the range.

The sound depth of the ATH-M50x is simply amazing, panning and stereo imaging are like desktop monitors. At least it's getting very close. So much so that with the help of the M-series you can replace multi-driver gaming headphones.

I have never seen more versatile headphones.

Everyday

Audio-Technica presents portable headphones. In this category, the ANC70 model is considered very popular, which we will talk about a little later. There is also an arc headset that can be used in conjunction with a portable player, tablet or smartphone. Of course, they do not have super high indicators, since they are not aimed at professional areas.

The main advantage of such models is their light weight, comfortable ear pads and a good frequency range. This headset often includes the famous clips and earbuds. They are also portable headphones. Some of them have increased sound insulation.

Specialized

This category includes Audio-Technica studio headphones. These include the famous M50 and various modifications. There is also a headset for DJs. The most popular model is SJ55. Their cups can make a full rotation, which is very convenient for professional sound engineers.

In this category, we cannot fail to mention women's headphones. There is even a whole series of Bijoué, which received bright colors, decorations made of crystals, rhinestones, etc. Well, home headphones, which are intended for indoor use, complete the specialized group. Usually these are very comfortable models with good sound insulation.

Appearance

In general, this model is positioned as a professional headset that is ideal for working in the studio. On the other hand, it will also be appreciated by ordinary users who love high-quality sound. In addition to good characteristics, this model also has an attractive appearance.

These headphones have a classic, discreet design. They have a full-size design. The ear pads are large and covered with leatherette, which does a good job of sound insulation. The manufacturer also covered the headband with artificial leather, and inside there is a soft material that does not put pressure on the head.

The company logo is displayed on the bowls. And at the top of the headband, as usual, is the name of the company. The headphone mount is mechanical, it is of high quality, and has a good mechanism that helps fold the cups. Thus, the headset becomes compact and easy to transport.

Peculiarities

Audio-Technica headphones often receive good reviews due to their good packaging. ATH-M40x is no exception. Firstly, it is possible to change the cable, which is removable. Moreover, you can connect a regular one, or it is possible to install a spiral one. Secondly, there is a leatherette case for the headphones. It contains the assembled model with all accessories.

The frequency range is 15-24000 Hz, the sensitivity reaches 95 dB, and the impedance is 35 Ohms. The maximum power of the model is impressive - 1600 mW. It’s worth explaining for those who don’t understand these numbers: the Japanese were able to achieve excellent sound, especially considering the budget model.

The sound is smooth, and in some cases neutral. Both high and low frequencies are harmoniously combined and do not stand out from each other. Of course, you cannot demand high-quality sound if you have good headphones, but a poor playback device. If you have the right set of devices, this option will be optimal and will please you with the price/quality ratio.

Middle segment

The middle price segment is the ideal option when choosing any device. Here you can find a decent headset with good quality materials and good characteristics. The model TM Audio-Technica ATH MSR7 can be attributed to such devices. This option is perfect not only for those who work with sound, but also for ordinary users.

Of course, the price may seem too high for those who are used to using cheap vacuum headphones. But it’s worth paying for sound quality, and the price in our case will be about 15 thousand rubles.

Overhead models

5 Best Folding Headphones

Package

In this case, it is worth talking about it separately, since the equipment should become an example for many other manufacturers. Of course, it is justified by the fairly high cost, but some companies forget about this. The model in question from Audio-Technica (ATH MSR7) goes on sale in a box made of thick cardboard, the color palette is dark.

Under the headphones there is a compartment with accessories. There are already three additional cables. One long, the second short and the third with a headset. All this can be placed in an additional case, which also accommodates headphones.

Matte plastic body is a plus

Headphones from Audio-Technica are one of the few about which there is no point in writing that “nothing creaks anywhere,” because this is already clear. The build quality is high, the tactile sensations are pleasant.

The body is made of matte plastic, so the headphones will not shine on your head. Strict minimalism is still in fashion, so the ATH-S200BT does not attract much attention and looks harmonious.

All music control buttons are located on the left earcup. There is also an on/off rocker. The buttons are pressed with a clear click, and it’s convenient to feel with your finger on the go.

The main thing right away: the ATH-S200BT does not fold. The earcups can be unfolded to make it easier to wear the headphones around your neck, and that’s it. The folding mechanism is convenient, but the one-piece design is much more reliable, as practice shows.

The ear pads and pad on the headband are made of decent quality leatherette. It does not smell like Chinese dermantine, is pleasant to the touch and has not lost its presentation after several weeks of active use of the headphones.

The ATH-S200BT is charged using a micro-USB cable. Charging time is about 4 hours. The battery status is indicated by a light indicator next to the connector.

The cups themselves are not very large, but the headphones fit me like a glove, my ears don’t hurt or sweat.

The ATH-S200BT comes with a wire, so after 40 hours of wireless operation, when the battery runs out, you can easily turn them into wired ones with a flick of the wrist and listen to music or continue talking on the phone.

Ergonomics

At first glance, it seems that the company decided to copy the design from the Sony MDR line. There are some similarities, but this option looks better. Metal and leatherette were used for it. The headset does not have a large selection of colors. It comes in black with a blue tint. There are also silver inserts. This option is available to everyone. But specifically for Asians, there are bright accessories in red and gold.

In general, the design is reliable, all mechanisms are strong and work correctly even over time. Of course, the ear pads and cables will wear out, but they are easy to change. The cups themselves can rotate in two axes. The headband is made of eco-leather, but, as experience shows, over time it wears out, unfortunately, just like on the ear pads.

The developers decided to pay a lot of attention to sound insulation, so the pressure here is slightly exaggerated, so that owners of large heads will find the headphones uncomfortable. Of course, you can slightly bend the headband, which has a steel plate at its base. But the main thing is not to overdo it. As a result, the model received really good insulation. Not the best, but sufficient for indoors, streets and parks. But in the subway or on an airplane, external noise is still noticeable.

The frequency range is comfortable – 5-40000 Hz. Sensitivity - 100 dB, impedance - 35 Ohms. This model also has a condenser microphone, which is not of high quality; its frequency is 50-4000 Hz.

Hi-Fi class

Full-size Audio-Technica ATH 900 headphones are monitor headphones. There are two model variants in this series: A900 and AD900. The difference is that the first is a closed type, and the second is an open type. Both models come in similar boxes that have an open “window” through which you can see your purchase.

The build quality, as always, is excellent. Although after 6 years such models would hardly have attracted the attention of music lovers. For workers in the recording industry, this is not so important, which is why even now the headset is popular among such people.

The headband of the two models is designed using identical technology. The landing is soft, there are few moving parts in the design. There is a main frame and a movable headband that provides shock absorption. As a result, such headphones will fit perfectly on any head and will automatically adjust to the size. The only thing you can complain about is that the fastening is not secure enough. It is suitable for static work, but there is discomfort during a walk.

The ear pads in the first case are covered with leatherette, and in the second with velor. They have minimal mobility, but that's not a bad thing. The cups themselves are deep and completely cover the auricle. They create minimal pressure, so you don’t get tired of them even after prolonged use.

As mentioned earlier, these two Audio-Technica headphone models - ATH A900 and AD900 - differ in design: there are closed and open variations. In the first case, the ear pads have a closed outer casing, and in the second they have a flat perforated plate that distributes sound in both directions.

Convenient for a DJ, convenient on the street, at work, and even in the subway

Over-ear headphones are a sore subject of mine. I really love their sound, isolation from the outside world. But I can’t wear it for more than half an hour: my glasses get in the way, my head sweats, or something else. And this is at home, what can we say about the street!

Therefore, when the choice finally fell on the universally reviewed model ATH-M50x, I first decided to conduct a quiet test: I tried to spend the whole day with headphones on my head. At home and on the street, in transport and in the studio, lying down and on the go.

The soft leather headband and comfortable ear pads did not disappoint. The fit is unobtrusive, the weight is practically not felt. Nothing presses anywhere, and my head doesn’t sweat.

The apparent lightness is deceptive: there is a serious metal frame for maximum strength. You can even throw it into a backpack without a case or other protection - it will hold up, and your grandchildren will inherit it.

A pleasant fit is ensured by fastening the cups with durable double hinges on U-shaped brackets. The cups can be rotated to any angle along 2 axes. At the same time, Audio-Technica ATH-M50x folds very compactly, fitting even into small bags. They don't interfere with the neck either.

An additional feature: these headphones can be worn with support on the headband or just on the ear pads, raised above your head; moving it to the back of the head, to the chin or lowering the headband onto the neck; If necessary, you can press one earphone with your shoulder to your ear. And yes, the power of 1600 mW will allow you to listen with one ear even in a noisy room. For a DJ or sound engineer - a real find!

Thirdly , the cups cover any ear. The ear pads do not put pressure on the ear and do not irritate the skin.

At work, I often have to use 1 earphone (due to the specifics of recordings and personal preference) and walk a lot, so I liked another feature of the ATH-M50x: all included cables (2 straight and 1 “accordion”, like a phone) use swivel mount.

I inserted a 2.5 mm plug into the connector on the cup, tightened it - and the cable sat tightly. Thanks to this, the “fifties” have the advantages of both removable and non-removable wires. The durable cable does not fly out during sudden movement, but can easily be changed to one of the supplied ones or your own (although the wires here are such that even hardened audiophiles will not want to change/modd them).

The sound insulation here is quite good, by the way. In the test, I tried wearing “silent” headphones on my head, and was very surprised - the volume of external sounds dropped, almost like in industrial earplugs for construction sites.

The list of really useful features from these Audio-Technicas goes on and on, but we can't help but mention the incredible durability of the ATH-M50x. You can carry it in your backpack without folding it. Many people have been doing this for years, but their “ears” don’t care.

Technologies

It is worth saying that Audio-Technica always develops headphones at a serious level. Although both models appeared in 2011, now they can still compete with new products in the studio headset segment. Although they also have some shortcomings. For example, low resistance. The ATH A900 model does not have very good sound insulation.

Open headphones received a range of 5-35000 Hz, impedance is 35 Ohms, and sensitivity is 100 dB. The closed model has almost identical values - 101 dB, 40 Ohms and 5-40000 Hz.

By the way, the interesting thing is that to get better sound from these models, you have to wait. After some time they warm up and play music much better. When you turn them on, you can immediately hear somewhat distorted bass, the sound itself is a little shallow, and the volume is not always correct.

In general, both models are not bad, especially for ordinary users. They fit comfortably on the head, do not put pressure on the ears and sound pleasant. Of course, they can be used in the professional field, but now several stronger and more worthy competitors have appeared.

Audio-Technica ATH-M: for every occasion and budget

There are 2 ways to find the ideal: seek advice and try it yourself. If we turn to public opinion, it turns out that in the amateur and professional environment the headphones of the Japanese company Audio-Technica are very popular, part of the ATH-M line of 4 models: the initial ATH-M20x, the basic ATH-M30x, the semi-professional ATH-M40x and the legendary flagship ATH-M50x.

A legend is not born, it is made. The first version of these headphones without the letter x was released back in 2007 and instantly won the recognition of music lovers who listen to and write music. In the throes of choice, I listened to the entire M-line and a significant part of competitors recommended by specialized communities in the price range from 70 to 250 dollars.

I chose a fresh, modernized flagship called ATH-M50x . And that's why.

The ATH-M line stands out sharply against the background of not only amateur, but also professional solutions. The Japanese came up with a very cool move: using cheap, simple and comfortable headphones with a flat amplitude-frequency response as a base, they improved the already cool “ears” with each new product.

The “Twentieth” base model would be an excellent everyday companion for a smartphone or computer. The ATH-M30 has a slightly more comfortable headband and is noticeably more massive. Finding itself in the middle of the lineup, the ATH-M40 received a more bulky and reliable design, an expanded scope of delivery, and a detachable cable.

The basic smooth sound improves with each number without fundamentally changing. The entire ATH-M series has a relaxed, smooth and very pleasant sound. When money is tight, you can take the cheapest ones - and you won’t go wrong.

Then why multiple options? Audio-Technica simply offered to pay for exactly what you need. The higher the number and price, the more cool features like a detachable cable; the deeper and more accurate the sound, the more correct it is for professional listening.

Accordingly, ATH-M50x is the most advanced. And the most popular, for 11 years in a row.

Sport equipment

As mentioned earlier, Audio-Technica has released headphones of various types and categories, and there are also devices for special applications. It's time to look at the sports version. ATH-SPORT1 is completely aimed at this audience. It’s worth saying right away that the model has received moisture protection. You won't be able to swim in them, but you shouldn't be afraid of splashes of water and drops of sweat.

The kit includes several attachments that can improve sound quality and increase noise insulation. There are also corrugated nozzles, the purpose of which is not entirely clear. It is only obvious that the manufacturer is concerned about the safety of the athlete, since with this attachment all sounds can be heard.

The appearance is different from the so-called droplets. This model received a special mount that should be fixed behind the ear. But an interesting problem arose with it: it is not suitable for all buyers. Those with large ears feel discomfort; the headphones themselves are not inserted tightly into the ears, and as a result the sound is distorted. Before purchasing a headset, be sure to try it on. Although this advice applies to all models.

ATH-SPORT1 also have a special clip for attaching to clothing, and there is a buttonhole that adjusts the length of the wire. As tests of this model have shown, thanks to the fastening, the headphones stay in place even during the most active exercises, which, of course, is the main advantage.

The maximum power of the headset is 200 mW, sensitivity reaches 100 dB, impedance is only 16 Ohms, and the frequency range is 20-23000 Hz. In general, the model has practically no disadvantages, except for the comfort of use for some ear shapes. And the headphones are light, comfortable, stylish, and their sporty direction is immediately obvious. The sound is quite suitable for sports.

Women's joy

Well, one cannot do without a description of the female model, since the manufacturer places emphasis on it. The most attractive and interesting variation in the line for lovely ladies is the product from Audio-Technica ATH CKF500. Of course, the main feature of the headset is its design and packaging.

The marketers did a great job on the box, adding both beauty and a little Japanese style. On the end of the package it is written: “Music opens the door to your heart.” Therefore, the key inside does not raise any questions. The headphones themselves have a regular shape, which has a small angle for sound removal. As a result, the earpiece is slightly deviated from .

Now about the design. On the back side there is a pebble, and next to it there are letters (calligraphic style) that indicate where the left and where the right earphone is. Interestingly, the kit even includes instructions for those girls who don’t know how to use headphones.

The cable is painted white, it is soft, flexible, but at the same time seems quite strong. There is a plug on which the keyhole has been pushed aside, continuing the theme of the key. There is a “pendant” on top, which is again decorated with a stone. The key, which is in the box, is designed to twist the wires around it so that they do not get tangled in the purse.

In addition to its attractive appearance, the model also received good characteristics. Frequency 20-200000 Hz, impedance - 16 Ohms, sensitivity - 100 dB. The values are almost identical to the sports version. Although, of course, the purchase of such a model will most likely be made precisely because of its special design.

Reviews

It is rare to find bad reviews about TM Audio-Technica products. The ATH-ES55 on-ear headphones, which were announced this year, have already become popular among buyers. First of all, they are praised for their stylish appearance. They also received high-quality case materials and good characteristics. It is believed that this model is best suited for walking. It doesn't have very good sound insulation, which only helps if you're outside. And the sound of the headset itself is excellent, there are several color options, and a durable cable. The straight plug causes complaints, but this is a matter of habit.

But the Audio-Technica SR5BT wireless headphones, judging by consumer reviews, have generally become one of the company’s best. The main advantage of the model can be considered its autonomy. Without recharging, they work up to 38 hours, which, of course, is an excellent result. The sound of the device is also not inferior to any of its competitors: the sound is clear, bright and soft.

What else can Audio-Technica offer music lovers? Headphones with microphone! Are you interested in this option? Then the SR5BT is perfect for you. The package includes a special cable that allows the user not only to listen to music, but also to communicate. The sound transmission is excellent, the microphone here is much better than in top-end smartphones, according to buyers. In general, this model is definitely not inferior to wired headphones. The price for a wireless headset is moderate – 9-12 thousand rubles.

Branded sound with its own character

The sound in headphones for 5 thousand rubles from Audio-Technica is unexpectedly good. The detailing is pleasantly surprising, and the separation of frequencies in the overall panorama reminds us that despite the low price, the ATH-S200BT are the creation of recognized masters in creating high-end audio accessories.

The earcups have 40mm neodymium drivers, so the volume margin is decent. In the subway, the music is not lost amid the roar of the train, and there is no need to turn the volume up to maximum.

The ATH-S200BT does not have noise reduction, but thanks to the comfortable ear pads, noise isolation is good. True, if you turn up the volume too loudly, those around you can hear what’s playing there.

The headphones have a built-in microphone, so they can be used as a full headset. On the street you speak in a normal voice, the interlocutor hears every word clearly, even if you are communicating next to a busy road.

conclusions

As reviews show, Audio-Technica headphones have average prices. There are, of course, premium models that are expensive due to the quality of the materials used, special features, and so on. But the middle segment is represented by a headset that has a favorable price-quality ratio.

It is especially convenient that in Russia and other CIS countries it is possible to find a place where Audio-Technica headphones can be repaired. This point is important, since the headset is branded, and you don’t want it to be dismantled anyhow. It is better to contact official service centers, where I know exactly all the possible breakdowns and bugs of each model.
