Sports, like music, are an integral part of life for many people. As a rule, these two directions intersect and complement each other. Scientists have proven that listening to your favorite songs while playing sports increases endurance and gives a boost of energy. That's why many runners are looking for comfortable, waterproof models with excellent sound quality. Today in the article we will look at the rating of the best headphones for running in 2022.
Pros and cons of running headphones
Any audio equipment has not only advantages, but also disadvantages. Running headphones are no exception. To cast aside all doubts about the advisability of such a purchase, you must first familiarize yourself with all the operating features of these devices.
Key benefits of using headphones for running:
- Large assortment with various modifications and pricing policies. Each person has the opportunity to choose a device “to their liking” at a price that is acceptable to them.
- High quality of assembly and materials used , moisture protection, thanks to which high-quality models have a long service life.
- Reliable fit on the ear , thanks to which you can not limit your freedom of action and feel more comfortable while jogging.
- Excellent ergonomics allow you to use the headphones for a long time without feeling discomfort.
- High quality sound and noise reduction. We are talking about models in the middle and expensive segments.
- It has been scientifically proven that listening to music while running increases endurance and gives you a boost of energy . In short, listening to your favorite music helps you achieve your fitness goals faster.
Despite all the advantages, running headphones are not without their drawbacks. The main ones:
- Budget models may not have high build quality, which is why the structure is not airtight and moisture can get into it. The service life of such models is not very long.
What music is better to run to?
Scientists and athletes recommend following the rules for creating a playlist for running and selecting the appropriate genre of music.
Rules for compiling a playlist
When creating a playlist for your runs, you should take into account:
- continuity of playback;
- calm first compositions (during warm-up);
- rhythmic music while jogging;
- calm melodies to relieve stress;
- motivating compositions;
- presence of percussive bass.
It is important that the compositions do not create discomfort during training.
Suitable music for running
According to studies, rock music helps in pumping up muscles. Scientists say that listening to rock music for cardio training is not recommended, especially if jogging in the morning. Pop and disco tracks are suitable for jogging if you have a clear and even pace. It is recommended to include rhythmic and motivating compositions in the playlist.
During training, the headphones should fit snugly and without pressure. It is recommended to create a playlist based on rhythmic compositions and a genre corresponding to the type of workout.
Which headphones are best for running?
Rating of running headphones
In order not to make a mistake in choosing the most suitable model of headphones for running and playing sports, it is recommended that you first familiarize yourself with the main criteria that determine the practicality, convenience and durability of using the equipment.
What criteria should you pay attention to when choosing headphones for running?
- Comfort. It is important that running devices are held securely and do not cause discomfort after prolonged use. Headphones falling out while running is perhaps one of the most common problems. It is preferable to use vacuum models with a behind-the-ear mounting method. It’s even better if the devices are wireless. A variety of headphones for running according to the method of attachment: with earhooks of different shapes, with a neck cord, with an occipital arch. As mentioned earlier, the first type is the most comfortable, but its price is higher than its analogues. To avoid making a mistake in your choice, it is recommended to try on the model and evaluate it before purchasing. How comfortable does it sit on your head?
- Sound quality. Sports headphones should have a balanced bass sound, this is extremely important not only for runners, but also for other athletes. The bass allows you to set the rhythm of your run, even if you are not focusing directly on the music.
- Noise suppression. When choosing a device for running, this is not the most important factor, but if the sound insulation is poor, you will not be able to enjoy high-quality sound while moving. Extraneous noise can be distracting and even unnerving. Vacuum and full-size gadgets with tight-fitting ear pads have decent noise reduction results. In this case, we are not talking about the loudest models, but those with good sound insulation. Hearing damage cannot be restored, so it is generally better to avoid buying the loudest headphones.
- Moisture protection and long service life. When running, even the most endurance athletes sweat, which causes moisture to become trapped in the membrane. If the headphones are afraid of moisture, then after such “experiments” one earphone may begin to play more quietly or even stop emitting at least some signs of life. Most running gadgets are waterproof. Build quality and materials also matter. Sports headphones may fall or hit surfaces, which may cause damage. The stronger the body, the longer the service life of the equipment.
- Design. Headphones for running should first of all be comfortable and provide high-quality sound, but for some athletes, appearance is the determining factor. A wide range of running devices will allow you to choose a model to suit your taste. Models with an ascetic design and, on the contrary, with bright colors and unusual prints, textures and shapes are presented.
- Autonomy of work. It is better to purchase wireless gadgets equipped with a rechargeable battery for running. Firstly, the wires will not rub and hit your neck while running. Secondly, no restrictions, only freedom of movement. Thirdly, gadgets with batteries can be used for a long time without recharging. The optimal operating time of the headphones without recharging is 6-8 hours.
- Ergonomics. Headphones for running should be compact in size and light in weight. If the selected model does not meet these criteria, then with a high degree of probability the large and heavy structure will begin to cause discomfort during use. It is also not recommended to give preference to almost weightless gadgets, since this indicates the dubious quality of the manufacturing materials.
- Equipped with a microphone. This is not a determining factor for sports headphones, but if you have it, you can talk on the phone without interruption. This can save a lot of time. You can check out our rating of headphones with an excellent microphone.
- Price. Prices for sports headphones are not much different from prices for regular gadgets. This is due to the fact that even ordinary (non-sports) models can meet all the previously listed criteria. Pricing policies vary greatly. Therefore, everyone selects models taking into account their financial capabilities. The cost of high-quality devices starts from $50-80.
These are the main criteria that it is recommended to pay attention to when choosing headphones for running. It is also recommended to consider well-known and well-established manufacturers. It is better to make purchases in large or chain stores of household appliances, perhaps from official representatives. Be sure to make sure that the device is working properly and that all accompanying documentation is available. To narrow your search, we recommend checking out our ranking of the best headphones for running in 2022.
Criteria for selecting suitable running devices
When choosing headphones, it is recommended to study the following criteria:
- degree of protection;
- sound quality;
- ergonomics.
Degree of protection
For those who like to play sports outdoors, the material of the accessory is important. Water resistance allows you to use the device during precipitation.
The durability of the material is important for supporters of active exercise.
Sound quality level
The richness of the sound is valued by competitive dancers. The frequency range from 18Hz to 20kHz makes the sound clear.
Ergonomics
This is a set of conditions that do not cause harm to the device. They can be different: precipitation, distance from communication towers, extreme sports.
It is worth finding out about the operating time without recharging, the presence of water protection, as well as the quality of communication.

- The sound in the headphones is good, there were no obvious problems. The emphasis is on low frequencies, and smooth high frequencies will be pleasant to anyone
- Convenience. Koss Porta Pro Wireless are comfortable wireless headphones for running. Lightweight and fit well. You can stay in them all day and your ears won't get tired.
- Compactness. The ability to fold the headphones and their size allows you to hide them in a jacket without any problems
- Working hours. Not to say that the autonomy of the work is high. However, 15 hours will easily last you a whole week of running. It’s not for nothing that the model made it into our TOP of the best headphones for running.
- Design. The model looks outdated and fragile, a strange decision from the manufacturer
- Foam rubber. Ear pads and additional fastenings quickly become unusable. Will have to change often. Especially if you run actively
- Control on the wire. The brand’s extremely controversial decision to implement wired controls. In fact, in Koss Porta Pro Wireless this wire is like an audio cable
Beyerdynamic Byron BT
This model is not positioned as a sports model and is not protected from water, but in all other respects it can compete for primacy in our list. This is especially true for sound, because Beyerdynamic is one of the world leaders in High End equipment; The company is based in Germany.
The earcups have a laconic cylindrical shape and are designed to fit deep into the ear canals. This ensures excellent stability of the gadget in the ears - with Byron you can even run or do gymnastic exercises. At the same time, the headphones are compact and lightweight - their weight is a record 13 g! And besides, here we are dealing with exceptional reliability: the bowls are made of lightweight aluminum. The silicone ear pads are made in a spherical shape, and the kit also includes optional ear clips - just like the Monster Superslim.
ByronBT is a wireless model, and therefore the only cable available only connects the earcups. It houses a classic three-button remote control with a microphone. The embossed round buttons are made in an unusual way - they both look and operate very well. Bluetooth version 4.1 provides up to 15 m distance from the sound source, the connection is stable and clear. The gadget outperforms the previous model in terms of autonomy - Byron can work without recharging for 7.5 hours. A full charge takes just under two hours.
And, of course, the sound - the ByronBTs sound excellent for their price range. In fact, it will be extremely difficult to find an alternative to the Byrons in this capacity. And, by the way, the gadget also supports the aptX codec.
Apple Airpods Pro
Apple headphones with fast charging function.
Apple Airpods Pro are perhaps the best vacuum headphones for running. Another plus is that they are wireless. In this model, the company introduced an in-channel form factor (less than a year has passed). From here we can safely say that the headphones are comfortable and stay firmly in the ears when jogging. Well, the classic elements of the Apple style: white color, minimalist design and other brand features.
This is not to say that Airpods Pro are worth the money. But it’s still $240! However, unlike other Apple developments, these wireless headphones seem to be designed for running. However, you can find the best analogues of AirPods.

- Sound. It has good bass, everything is balanced and smooth, and the highs are pronounced. I think this is the best model of the entire line
- Convenience. Airpods Pro have a pressure compensator and universal ear pads. After just a couple of minutes of running you begin to forget about them.
- Battery performance. The charge lasts up to 5 hours, and in active call mode about 4. And with five minutes of fast charging, wireless running headphones can play for about a whole hour
- Design. The new model is made more compact than previous Airpods. There’s no need to talk about style and image - these are the best wireless headphones for running and they are 100% deservedly in the TOP rating
- Active Noise Cancellation (ANC). Noise suppression is excellent, almost complete isolation. It is possible to listen to the world through a microphone, and other features can be configured in your smartphone
- Volume control. You can only control it from your iPhone - it’s not very convenient when running
- Price. $240 is expensive when there are decent running models at a lower price
FAQ
What additional features do running headphones have?
Many wireless headphones from well-known brands are controlled by a mobile application. In addition to the standard ones, it often includes additional functions useful for running and fitness: heart rate monitoring, stopwatch, timer, voice trainer. Advanced features make running more efficient, but increase the cost of products.
Do you need noise cancellation for sports headphones?
On the one hand, noise reduction is useful, as it improves playback quality and prevents distractions from extraneous sounds. On the other hand, absolute isolation from the environment can be dangerous. For outdoor activities, experts do not recommend active noise reduction, which completely blocks sounds. Especially when you are not running in a stadium, but in a park or next to a roadway.
Can listening to music affect your workout results?
Scientific research proves that music has a positive effect on athletic achievements. It reduces anxiety, increases pain threshold and improves mood. As a result, a person gets less tired and achieves better results.

Headphones differ from all others in bone conduction. Sound is transmitted by impulses through the bone rather than by sound waves through the ear. Your ears always remain free, you can perfectly hear what is happening around you and the music at the same time. Therefore, the sound quality in them is only sufficient for listening to rhythmic music during training. For more complex compositions, it is better to choose other headphones.

- Water and dust protection IP67, withstands immersion up to 1 m
- Works 8 hours without recharging
- Button control
- Do not cover your ears, allowing you to safely ride a bike around the city, run in busy places or maintain contact with colleagues in the office
- Fits securely and comfortably on your head
Minuses
- In noisy places it is difficult to hear music; earplugs are included for this purpose.
- Connected by a headband at the back of the head
- In silence, people around can hear music from headphones even at medium volume
If you want something cheaper, check out the budget version of the AfterShokz Trekz Air.

VIEW IN YA.MARKET
Weight and size: 81 x 51 x 30 mm, 6 g (each bud) Battery life: 8 hours, 24 hours (with charging case) Bluetooth range: 9 meters Waterproof: Yes
pros
- Bass sound with adjustable equalizer
- Long battery life
- Heart rate monitoring
Minuses
- Bulky and protruding
- Amazfit app has limited support
To call the Amazfit Powerbuds an impressive product is an understatement. It's remarkable to see the amount of functionality packed into these headphones, especially in their own way. They have a PPG heart rate sensor that collects biometric data that can be saved in the app. By the way, the Zepp app has plenty of activity tracking fields (e.g. calories burned, BMI, steps) and customization options, from a custom EQ with multiple presets to workout modes. Plus, you get excellent runtime (8 hours) on a full charge, as well as impressive bass to keep your adrenaline levels high.
Comfort may be an issue for some users as the buds are bulky and the sensor that presses against the ear to stabilize the fit touches the skin. It would also be nice if the app worked with other popular running apps, Strava and Relive seem to be the only ones compatible at the moment. However, it's impossible to overlook the level of performance you get for such a low price.

- Setup. Powerbeats Pro is very easy to customize
- Battery performance. 24 hours is excellent battery life. There is absolutely no doubt about them
- Sound. Everything is harmonious and balanced, no annoying bass
- Fastening. The headphones fit perfectly on the ears, which is why they are included in the rating of the best headphones for running.
- Case size. Yes, perhaps these are all nitpicks, but nevertheless: the case could have been made smaller.
Denon AH-C160W
The next model comes from Japan, and is represented by the famous High End brand Denon. In general, it’s very pleasing that such companies have taken up sports headphones: after all, whatever one may say, audiophile manufacturers will give anyone a head start in sound.
Denon AH-C160W are sports wireless headphones with ear hooks. Many athletes are very impressed by this uniform, because here you can even go into the ring - the headset will not fall out, even if it breaks. The holders are elastic, nicely rubberized and very comfortable, you hardly feel them on your ears. The seating depth of the AH-C160W is average; I was very pleased with the presence of Comply foam nozzles (if anyone doesn’t know, humanity has not yet come up with anything more convenient). Silicone ear pads are also available in different sizes.
The headphones are protected from dust and water according to the IP57 standard, that is, they can withstand even heavy rain, and you can forget about sweat altogether.
Despite the apparent size of the holders, the gadget weighs only 23 g, and the short flexible wire can be secured with the included tie. Conveniently, the controls are located on the headphones themselves, leaving the cable the opportunity to maintain maximum elasticity. Bluetooth here is very long-range - you can definitely count on 20 m. The battery life is not the longest - 4 hours: the headphones were developed for training, so they are not suitable for a long marathon.
The sound of the Denon AH-C160W is simply excellent - especially for sports headphones. However, one cannot expect anything else from a Japanese company with a hundred-year history. The gadget produces transparent, deep, dynamic and very detailed sound. The bass is especially pleasing - fast, spacious and honest. The mids and highs also sound decent; most genres will feel at ease here.

Headphones for exercise
For the gym, in-ear headphones are usually chosen instead of over-ear headphones. They are lighter, more flexible and often designed specifically for exercise. Even if you prefer the sound of over-ear headphones, sweat can seep into most ear cups and the extra weight on your head while exercising isn't a good thing. This doesn't mean you can't use over-ear headphones in the gym. There are several models that work well against sweat and are easy to clean, like the Plantronic BackBeat Fit 500 .
Bluetooth headphones allow you to listen to music without having to fiddle with wires and connect them to your smartphone. They are more expensive compared to wired headphones, but the convenience is worth it. They need a power source, so you have to monitor the battery level. If you exercise no more than a couple of hours a day, a full charge will definitely be enough for you.
