Rectangular port or round, pipe or slot, what to choose!

When it comes to choosing the type of enclosure to get the best sound from your subwoofer, many people start asking the question: what is the best enclosure for a subwoofer? The purpose of the enclosure is to improve bass response and prevent damage to the subwoofer due to excessive excursion.

There are a few things you will need to consider before making your final choice that will ultimately affect the sound. Here are some of the key points you need to consider:

  • How much space is available in your vehicle and how much are you willing to sacrifice?
  • What type of speaker will you use? Some speakers are designed for certain types of cabinets.
  • How much power does the amplifier produce?

In today's article we will look at the types of subwoofer boxes and find out which is better to help you make the right choice.

Which acoustic design should you choose for your project: ZY, FI, BP, HF or horn?

Let me remind you what subwoofer acoustic designs are and their characteristic features:
1. Infinite screen, or free air (FE).

This is a speaker in a shelf, or similar variations. The sound is good, clear, fast. But quiet. And it’s difficult to make the correct FE, because we need to hermetically separate the interior from the trunk and make the shelf ideally rigid. And all the same, the AKZ (acoustic short circuit) will be across the street, which will lead to losses in the lower bass. Therefore, PV has limited use, and good speakers for it are not so easy to find.

2. Closed box (CL)

This is a sealed box. Excellent design that is suitable for playing live music, from classical to rock, jazz and blues. And even for club music, but you need to use large subs, for example 12-15″. And for live music, the most popular speaker is 10″. One or 2 if the bass needs to be fast, but you need a lot of it.

Advantages: excellent fast and clear bass, ability to play low in the infra, does not require trimming from below (although this is sometimes used), takes up little space.

Disadvantages: quiet, not capable of “pumping” from the heart, not suitable for playing genres with a very large amount of bass. Well, it can overheat, because the volume is closed.

3. Bass reflex (FI).

This is a box with a port, pipe or slot. Not with a hole, as many say
