How I chose my first hi-fi system
How I started my journey into the world of Hi-Fi, what I chose from and what conclusion I came to.
I’ve been meaning to talk about my beginnings in Hi-Fi for a long time, and I’ve finally decided to do so. Perhaps my article will be useful to someone.
It all started with the decision to purchase decent equipment for listening to music. Not knowing that purchasing a stereo without listening is bad manners, I chose DALI Oberon 3 bookshelf speakers based on reviews, planning to put them on a flimsy two-meter television shelf. The issue regarding the remaining components was resolved instantly. In one of the large stores selling audio equipment, I was advised to buy a Denon DRA-800H stereo receiver, which fulfilled my wishes in listening to music from streaming services and conveniently connecting to a TV.
Thus, at the end of 2022, a budget of 85 thousand rubles was outlined, which somewhat exceeded my unassuming wishes - cheaper and better. Although, in general, I had no idea what “better” meant, rightly believing that the more expensive, the better, seasoned with reviews and awards. This market and its participants were completely unfamiliar to me, so I began a comparative analysis of online stores for prices, it’s not for nothing that a marketer...
The devil pulled me (or maybe quite the opposite) to go to the website of a small representative of fellow online sellers, where in black and white, black and yellow it was offered to receive, for a comparable amount, a set of the same Denon and Elac Debut F5.2 floor standing units. Mmm... Floorstanding... 3 stripes... That must be great, I thought.
The reviews confirmed me in choosing this kit, but I was tormented by vague doubts, why is it so cheap? I called there, they confirmed that they were new, with packaging, without defects. However, it didn’t work out. There was still a defect, very small, invisible and not affecting the sound - one complete spike of one of the speakers did not screw in due to the lack of threads. It was unpleasant, because they had to stand on the carpet, and without spikes they are less stable. Definitely change... But that didn’t stop me from listening to them.

All this was connected using a Real Cable BM150T 2x1.5 cable (I took 10 m, with a margin). Everything was connected and configured using TV simply and conveniently. The convenient HEOS application made it possible to control listening from a computer using WiFi, from a USB flash drive and from streaming services (I chose Tidal and paid for a Hi-Fi subscription, it’s a pity that this Denon does not support MASTERS). Turned it on and... WOW! This is the sound... After the “muson” from computer speakers, a TV and the speakers of a personal car, it was “WOW”! Very transparent, detailed, large-scale, with weighty bass...
When a relative came to visit, an old music lover who owned S-90 speakers, etc. in the 80s. etc., and lately content with the old music. center “Pioneer”, then after listening, he exclaimed - “I’ll buy it!!!” After two weeks of use, I noticed some shortcomings in the high notes of female vocals, a slightly delayed bass and some lack of integrity. Well, to enjoy listening, you need to turn up the volume. They don’t look for good from good, so I wanted to exchange them for the same ones.
Unfortunately, and as it turns out later, fortunately, the seller did not have any Elaks. And not only them. It was necessary to choose what to change to. On the advice of Internet friends, I went to listen to one of the largest stores on this topic. I listened from what I had, namely Heco Aurora 700, Monitor Audio Bronze 6 and DALI Oberon 5. I dismissed the Oberons immediately, these kids got lost in the large control panel and did not impress. Heko and MA sounded the same, and not much different from the homemade Elaks, to my untrained ear. Therefore, I decided to choose MA Bronze because I liked the design.
The seller replaced Elaki with a small additional payment, picking up the Debuts and delivering the MAs for free, without much protest. Why protest? One of the plastic packages of the speakers was, on the one hand, not sealed, but secured with tape, which I did not immediately notice. From this I conclude that I am not the first owner of these slightly defective speakers. But that’s not the point... I connected Bronze and... Somehow it’s not very good.

I just listened to Elaki, reconnected MA and not very well. It doesn't have the same transparency as Elac. It was as if someone had covered her with a blanket. Although later I appreciated the more coherent sound, more musical, with goosebumps, with an abundance of air felt around you. But most importantly, the low frequencies are buzzing. No, they don’t buzz, they HORN. Even in the center of the Bronze room there was a buzz. Debut was hummed, but delicately. In general, I returned them two weeks later. Thanks to the seller, we returned the money for the entire set, with the exception of the cable, which I still had.
You quickly get used to good things, so being left without Music, I hastily began looking for new speakers, since there were no complaints about Denon. And then it turned out that they give a decent discount on Monitor Audio Silver and there is a chance to get two hundredths. According to ratings and reviews, everything is good. Prize-winners of bourgeois publications (yes, marketing). Technological. They look great. In theory, from a different league. 5 years warranty. A good option. Everyone in the same store was ready to give away Denon and Silver, of course it was necessary to “finish” a little. But the residue remained, so I wanted to “sponsor” another store.
As a result of simple actions and arguments, Audiomania made me happy with this kit for the desired amount, for which I am very grateful to it. Don't take it for advertising, I'm really grateful to them. It’s especially heartening that now this set will cost much more without discounts. I consider myself very lucky. True, compromises had to be made. I wanted black speakers, but they only offered them in Walnut color and that confused me a little. But not enough to refuse such a great offer.
I ordered the DRA-800H + Monitor Audio Silver 200, they delivered it, connected it and... Great! There was no longer that WOW like after the first acquaintance with Hi-Fi, but the sound seemed simply excellent. Detailed, transparent, musical, everything has its place, the same abundance of air felt around, like Bronze. And yes, without marriage. Walnut fits perfectly into a dark interior, focusing attention on the speakers, and, at the same time, they do not look foreign. If they offered to change it, not only I, but also my wife would refuse. I never paid much attention to the finishing of the speakers, but veneer certainly looks nicer. I was especially surprised that the pattern on the left and right speakers is identical, not only on the front, but also on the sides.
After a year of listening to this set, I can add, to the first impressions, a wide music scene. In some compositions it occupies the entire “long” wall (more than 5 meters / room 19 sq.m.). They sound great at low volumes. Very fast. The receiver and speakers made it possible to use a bi-wiring connection, it was not in vain that I took 10 m of cable - it became even better.
Among the shortcomings, the speakers are moved away from the wall by almost half a meter, but sometimes I would like more stage depth. The single-bolt fastening of the speakers must be periodically tightened, but since there is no “fool proof”, there is a risk of damaging the speakers by tightening them too tightly. Therefore, I try to limit my “twisting” enthusiasm. One thing is upsetting - they are buzzing. Although, this is probably not the fault of the speakers, but of the room. But that's a completely different story...

To sum it up, I'm happy! I enjoy the music, despite the humming in some compositions. Moreover, I am gradually coping with the noise. I can no longer watch TV without a stereo system, it’s terrible. For the money that was paid, I could hardly have found a better Hi-Fi system. Would I regret spending money on Debuts or Bronzes if they were “my only ones”? Don't think.
And this is the conclusion I came to. Not only that without listening experience, a familiarization trip to showrooms may not provide an objective assessment of the sound of the system, but also your listening room will make significant adjustments.
A striking example is the DALI Oberon 5. Most likely, at my 19 meters they would sound no worse than their competitors. And Monitor Audio Bronze or Silver will not hum in large acoustically prepared control room salons, unlike in an ordinary apartment. The influence of connecting components to please the seller cannot be ruled out. What prevents him from “under-twisting” the terminals or under-tuning the amplifier, pursuing his interests (the influence of connecting cables is a separate issue)?
Listening in salons is beneficial, first of all, to the seller, especially if you are new to this topic, since this way he has more opportunities for manipulation. It’s not for nothing that they actively offer to come to the audition (you remember, I’m a marketer myself). Plus, in an hour, or even 10 hours, all the nuances of the sound may not be revealed, and your mood or well-being may affect the impressions. Only long-term listening at home can reveal the qualities of speakers or other components.
Therefore, if these are your first steps in Hi-Fi, you don’t know what exactly you want from a stereo system, how you want to listen to music (in the background or thoughtfully), and you don’t plan to acoustically improve the room, then it doesn’t really matter which first system you choose . My advice is to choose according to the ratings and awards of specialized publications (or better yet EISA), appearance and you won’t regret it. You will get a system that has been appreciated by people who have listened to a large number of setups under different conditions and, at least, outright “slag” will be excluded. This will be the basis from which you can dance, in every sense of the word...
