Audio systems come in a variety of formats - from a simple stereo pair of computer speakers to complex branching sets for home theaters. In any case, massive acoustic systems are of greatest consumer interest, since they are the ones who are able to most fully and vividly reproduce the entire spectrum of sound - from the highest frequencies to the lowest. Such systems require floor-standing installation, and if we are talking about a 5.1 or 7.1 sound set, then at least the front speakers will be floor-standing.

The editors of Simplerule magazine bring you an extended overview of the best floor-standing speaker systems that are available on the market in the first half of 2022. Our experts selected the models based on a combination of independent test results, opinions of well-known experts and feedback from the users themselves. In addition, the factor of affordability was also taken into account, so ultra-expensive Hi-End solutions were deliberately not included in the review.

The best budget floor-standing speaker systems under 15,000 rubles

Let's start traditionally with the most affordable segment in terms of cost - floor-standing speaker systems no more than 15 thousand rubles. At the same time, you need to understand that an affordable price in this case is by no means synonymous with something bad, and the brands presented make this clear enough.

YAMAHA NS-125F

Rating: 4.7

First, let's look at the acoustic system of the Japanese brand YAMAHA, which does not need any special introduction. This is one of the rare examples where the quality greatly exceeds the retail price of the product. In our review, this is the most inexpensive system, and in this class it is one of the best solutions on the market. When buying a system, you should remember that on almost all popular online trading platforms the price is indicated for one column, and not for a pair.

NS-125F is a two-way passive Hi-Fi speaker system. It is positioned as front-facing and in fact is, but a significant proportion of users successfully use it for rear sound. One column has dimensions of 1050x236x236 mm and a weight of 7.2 kg. The body is made of MDF, the finish can be different, including piano varnish, and this option is the most effective in appearance, judging by user reviews.

This system uses a bass-reflex type of acoustic design. Here and below, a bass reflex in acoustics should be understood as a hole-capacity in the shape of a pipe in the speaker body, which expands the range of reproduced low-frequency sound vibrations (bass). This is done due to the resonance effect of the bass reflex tube at a frequency lower than that reproduced directly by the speaker (loudspeaker).

The nominal total power of the system is 40W, peak power is 120W. Here and below, for passive systems, these values imply the input power of the amplifier to obtain optimal sound quality and expressiveness.

Each speaker contains three speakers - two cone woofers measuring 3.1 inches (80mm) in diameter and one dome tweeter measuring 0.9 inches (22mm). The system is capable of reproducing sound with a frequency of 60 to 35 thousand Hz. Impedance – 6 Ohms. Sensitivity – 86 dB/W/m. The crossover frequency is 6 kHz.

As mentioned above, the YAMAHA NS-125F is an impressive combination of affordable price and high quality. Feedback from users is strictly positive, and often even enthusiastic. Simplerule specialists can only fully confirm the user rating. This system really provides high-quality sound, with good lows even in the absence of a subwoofer with relatively small-diameter speakers that are clearly not designed for rich bass. Here the bass reflex works to its full potential. Externally, the speakers look stylish and presentable, especially those with piano lacquer finish.

Advantages

  1. high-quality sound;
  2. good lows for the rear;
  3. magnetic shielding;
  4. high quality assembly and materials;
  5. appearance;
  6. the most affordable price with impressive quality.

Flaws

  1. To use as front speakers you need an additional subwoofer.

YAMAHA NS-F160

Rating: 4.6

In order not to go too far, let’s immediately consider another YAMAHA floor-standing speaker system. The NS-F160 model is twice as expensive as the one described above, but still remains in the budget segment. The characteristics that we will analyze, as in the case of the previous model, concern one column.

So, the height of one floor stand is 1042 mm - almost the same as the previous one, width - 218 mm, depth - 369. The weight is very significant - 19 kg. The case is made of MDF with external finishing with a film with a wood pattern. The surface texture is very close to natural veneer.

NS-F160 is a two-way passive Hi-Fi speaker system, monopolar with bass reflex acoustic design. The nominal (recommended) power of the supplied amplification is 50W, peak power is 300W. Reproduces sound vibrations in the frequency range from 30 to 36 thousand Hz. Resistance – 6 Ohms. Sensitivity - 87dB.

The fundamental design of the speaker here is almost identical to the previous model, only the NS-F160 uses larger speakers: a pair of dynamic drivers 160mm in diameter, plus a 30mm high-frequency dome tweeter. There is magnetic protection.

The developers have provided options for connecting the speaker using both bi-wiring and bi-amplifier connection schemes, but the package does not include special cables, only for a standard connection.

If we analyze the formal characteristics and compare them with the real indications of the system in operation, then neither ordinary users nor professionals have any fundamental complaints about the NS-F160. Questions arise in a narrower spectrum. For example, many are unanimous in the opinion that for full-fledged lows, the speaker system will still need a subwoofer. Simplerule experts generally support this position, but at the same time, there are a huge number of users who are completely satisfied with the sound that the speakers produce in their pure form.

Advantages

  1. sufficiently high-quality sound;
  2. high-quality assembly, which in no way betrays “budget”;
  3. magnetic shielding;
  4. screw fastening of connectors for connection to the amplifier;
  5. possibility of connecting via bi-wiring and bi-amping;
  6. solid appearance.

Flaws

  1. for full-fledged bases you still need a subwoofer;
  2. The kit does not include special wires for connecting using bi-wire and bi-amp schemes.

Attitude Uni One

Rating: 4.5

The third number in the selection of the best budget floor-standing speaker systems according to Simplerule is a set of two Attitude Uni One speakers. In terms of cost per speaker, the price is even lower than the YAMAHA NS-125F, but the model goes on sale as a kit, costing an average of 12 thousand rubles as of the end of March 2022.

Let us immediately emphasize the key difference, which is also an advantage, of this model. Attitude Uni One is an active system, that is, it contains a built-in amplifier. Therefore, parameters such as impedance in the description of characteristics serve only for information, since the amplifier, by definition, here is selected by the manufacturer itself to be optimal for this form factor of the speakers and speaker parameters.

Dimensions of one Attitude Uni One speaker are 190x310x800mm, weight - 11.35kg. The column also contains three speakers, like the previous two options, but the distribution of reproduced frequencies here is carried out according to a different principle, more on that below. The sound source connection is screw.

This is a three-way system, not a two-way one. And the configuration of the speakers in one column is as follows: a low-frequency driver 127 mm in diameter with a polymer membrane; exactly the same emitter for mid frequencies; silk tweeter 25mm in diameter. The system is capable of reproducing sound in the frequency range from 40 to 20 thousand Hz. Rated power – 50W. The signal to noise ratio is 90dB.

What also significantly distinguishes the Attitude Uni One from many other floor-standing speaker systems is its significantly expanded functionality. So, here we see the possibility of simply connecting an iPod via a standard docking station; USB hub; card reader for flash memory MMC, SD, SDHC. This set of additional functions, however, evokes polar opinions from experts and advanced users. Some argue that such “stuffing” cannot but harm the main task of the speaker system - sound quality. Others, on the contrary, argue that additional functions do not directly affect the sound in any way, but are quite useful in themselves.

The obvious drawback of the Attitude Uni One is the included wires. The manufacturer clearly saved money on this, even in terms of thinking through physical applicability. The length, cross-section, quality/durability do not withstand even moderate criticism, so it would most likely be wise to replace the wires immediately.

Advantages

  1. built-in amplifier (active type system);
  2. advanced functionality;
  3. remote control;
  4. solid appearance;
  5. affordable price.

Flaws

  1. complete cables;
  2. inconvenient remote control.

As part of the design and installation of home acoustics, Neocinema offers a wide selection of acoustic systems: • hi-end acoustics, • wall-mounted acoustics, • floor-standing speakers, bookshelf speakers, • built-in audio system, ceiling acoustics, • acoustic systems for home cinema, • all-weather acoustics.

If you want to relax in the bath after a hard day at work, then doing so to the sounds of your favorite hits or melodies of classical music will be much more pleasant. To do this, you need to install moisture-resistant speakers for the bathroom, including them in the sound system of your apartment. A home acoustic system is no longer a luxury, but a norm of human life, comfort accessible to many! Hi-fi acoustic systems can only be used to provide sound for several rooms in an apartment or house (multi-room), or be part of a home theater.

It is quite difficult to independently understand the variety of high-fi acoustics offered on the market. Choosing the right speakers for your home, without making a mistake with the required power and sound quality of representatives of various brands and without miscalculating the price, is fully possible only for professionals.

HI-END SYSTEMS

The choice of HI-End class acoustic systems requires a particularly careful and thoughtful approach. Acoustics of this level cannot be determined “by eye” - you need to listen and hear it, accurately imagine the result you want to achieve. Don’t compromise with yourself – trust the professionals and get the maximum! What distinguishes hi end audio and hi end amplifiers from the usual hi fi, besides price? The purest sound, the difference in which a true music lover will immediately notice, hand-made assembly, unique design and excellent quality materials.

The priority of one or another hi-end equipment is determined by your taste and preferences in music. If you have favorite reliable brands of Hi-End speaker systems that you trust, you can order them from our managers. If you have not yet been able to decide among the world's best-selling high-end stereo systems, trust us with your choice, and we will not let you down!

Selecting hi-end equipment is half the battle; the main thing is to connect it correctly and professionally configure it. Neocinema installers not only have extensive experience working with HI-End acoustics, but also regularly take courses and master classes from suppliers and manufacturers of top systems. We are constantly developing to not only hone our skills, but also acquire new ones.

SPEAKER SYSTEMS FOR HOME CINEMA

Acoustics for a home theater are no less important than the screen or projector. The perception of a film largely depends on the soundtrack, more precisely its quality, volume and clarity. Speakers for home theaters are the very “horns” from which the voices of heroes pour out, the deafening sounds of special effects or frightening silence can be heard.

Choosing the right speakers for your home theater means doing a lot of work! Firstly, correctly calculate the power required for the selected room and other characteristics. Secondly, decide on the type of sound speakers (built-in speakers, bookshelf, floor-standing, wall-mounted). And finally, after studying a huge list of manufacturers, settle on the ideal design (appearance, color, size).

Now the main task is to meet your desired budget! And remember that home acoustics are not the whole movie theater. Difficult? Perhaps... But not for us! 19 years of professional work, and our installers navigate the sea of offers from various brands of home theater speaker systems like fish in water.

Home theater speaker systems should not only be good on their own, but also work well with electronics. If you make a choice at random or intuitively, you can be very disappointed in its result. Our installers will create unique home theater kits that meet all your needs.

HOME SPEAKERS 5.1

Traditionally, a 5.1 sound system is used for home use. It involves the use of 2 rear, 2 front speakers, center channel speakers and a subwoofer. This arrangement of acoustic systems for home cinema can be used both for placement in the living room and for placement in a personal cinema room.

Acoustics for a home theater in this scheme can be very diverse: sound speakers built into the ceiling or walls, suspended speakers, floor-standing and bookshelf speakers. You can order a project with installation and buy a 5.1 speaker system from Neocinema.

HARMONIOUS COMBINATION OF CINEMA ACOUSTICS WITH INTERIOR

The choice of the type of acoustics for a home theater is determined by the characteristics of the room and the designed interior design. Designer acoustics require an original appearance, non-standard design, manual assembly and limited edition, which makes them elite acoustics. Designer acoustics are used in expensive, rich interiors, where they become an accent, a source of pride, and an indicator of the owner’s status.

Home acoustic systems can remain unnoticed, hidden, hidden from view. To implement this idea, audio systems built into the ceiling are used. They often use built-in acoustics for home theaters when they want to save space and place emphasis on other interior details. Modern home theater acoustics are so diverse that they are suitable for any interior, from classic to high-tech. The installers from Neocinema are capable of helping harmoniously fit home theater acoustics into a design project, while also doing it technically competently!

A home theater sound system has its own rights and placement features that can affect the quality of playback. When designing a room where you plan to place a home theater, you need to know and take this into account.

BUILT-IN SPEAKER SYSTEMS

Built-in speaker systems are ideal for small rooms where space needs to be saved. Also, built-in acoustics for a cinema will be indispensable for projects in which there is a desire not to focus on technology and to minimize its visibility in the interior.

Built-in acoustic speakers are manufactured in three universal colors: black, white and gray. This makes it easy to select the right model. In cases where the ceiling is designed in bright colors, the built-in speaker systems can easily be repainted in the desired shade. Ceiling speakers are mounted in plasterboard structures, which are often used to accommodate built-in lamps. Thus, there are no special obstacles to choosing built-in acoustics in the ceiling.

The situation is a little different with acoustics built into walls. This type of built-in speaker systems is usually chosen for hidden installation in personal cinema rooms. In this case, sound insulation is installed in the walls, leaving special niches for the installation of built-in acoustics. Speaker systems built into the wall are usually used in 7.1., 7.2 home theater systems, where they serve as side speakers. In cinemas 5.1. Built-in acoustic systems are used, embedded in the ceiling.

Built-in acoustics are most often used as components of a stereo system. It is ideal for placement in a private house or apartment. A home audio system that includes built-in acoustics has significant advantages: it produces natural, smooth sound, is invisible in the interior, compact, and does not take up much space. Hi-End built-in speaker systems are used in top-level home theaters. Despite the small dimensions and the seemingly obvious impossibility of offering high-level sound, built-in acoustics from older models of famous brands can surprise sophisticated listeners.

It is advisable to directly install the built-in speaker systems after completing all the rough work. At the initial stage, the acoustic installation points are marked. Then, after erecting the plasterboard structures on the ceiling, holes are cut in the designated areas and acoustic boxes are installed. Ceiling speakers are installed directly in them. Installation of an audio system does not take much time and is carried out according to the schedule of repair work at your facility.

ALL-WEATHER ACOUSTICS

Outdoor acoustics are perfect for placement in a summer kitchen, veranda or open gazebo. All-weather speakers can be safely placed on an external wall, under a canopy or canopy. All-weather and moisture-resistant outdoor acoustics are not afraid of wind, moisture, snow and rain. All-weather speakers will be an ideal solution for lovers and connoisseurs of musical accompaniment in nature, around the fire, during friendly and neighborly gatherings in the fresh air. All-weather acoustics are ideal for use in a country house or cottage. Thanks to its moisture-proof properties, it can even be placed in a sauna or swimming pool.

The best mid-range floorstanding speakers

In the second selection of our review, we will look at four floor-standing speaker systems without strict restrictions on cost. Here we will present the conditional “middle class” floor-standing speaker systems with the best reviews from experts and ordinary users.

YAMAHA NS-555

Rating: 4.9

Let's start traditionally with the most inexpensive option, and again it will be the legendary Japanese brand YAMAHA with the even more popular NS-555 floor-standing acoustic system. In terms of price, it almost falls into the conventional budget category, but in terms of characteristics it is still significantly superior to the simplest models.

The dimensions of one column are 222mm wide, 980mm high and 345mm deep; weight – 20kg. The design and appearance as a whole are extremely impressive thanks to the laconic, but solid and “expensive” shape and multi-layer piano varnish coating. With the grills on and off, the look is radically different, but effective in both cases. The quality of materials and workmanship is impeccable, which is more the rule for YAMAHA products than something outstanding.

NS-555 is a three-way passive Hi-Fi speaker system with bass-reflex acoustic design and monopolar radiation. Each column (loudspeaker) contains four dynamic type emitters - two low-frequency ones 165 mm in diameter each, one mid-frequency cone 127 mm and one high-frequency tweeter 25 mm. Screw connectors for connecting an amplifier. It is possible to connect using a bi-wiring scheme. The speakers are equipped with magnetic protection.

The system is capable of reproducing sound covering the frequency range from 35 to 35 thousand Hz. Impedance - 6 Ohms. Sensitivity - 88dB. The nominal input amplification power is 100W.

The overall impression is that this model receives a lot of sincere praise for its clear, balanced, almost monitor-like sound. Here you can observe a small and rare dissatisfaction with the depth of the lows and the clarity of the highs, but you should understand that the system is really closer to studio monitors and broadcasts honest sound without embellishment. To add expressiveness to one or another frequency spectrum is left to the user’s choice at the level of the player, amplifier, equalizer, etc.

YAMAHA NS-555, in terms of evaluation by professionals and ordinary users, is similar to the two budget systems of the same brand described above - the feedback is strictly positive, bordering on enthusiastic. The Japanese definitely pleased us with their careful design of the system and impeccable technical execution. There are only openly “audiophile” complaints about this model, where there is still more subjectivity rather than fact.

Advantages

  1. high-quality, balanced almost monitor sound;
  2. high sound resolution and dynamics;
  3. bi-wiring connection option;
  4. quality of materials and workmanship;
  5. spectacular appearance;
  6. magnetic protection;
  7. one of the best ratios of price, quality and characteristics.

Flaws

  1. There are no objective disadvantages found for this price.

HECO Victa Prime 702

Rating: 4.8

Next, let's look at another interesting HECO speaker system. The Victa Prime 702 model is much more expensive than the one described above, but it is more powerful, more sensitive and generally has a wider range of capabilities in reproducing high-quality and balanced sound. The only thing is that the exterior of the Victa Prime 702 is far from matching the appearance of the luxurious YAMAHA NS-555.

The dimensions of one column are 203mm wide, 1052mm high, 315mm deep. The body is made of MDF in several glued layers. This design provides strength and also effectively prevents unwanted resonance and standing waves. The podium adds to the inertia of each column. External finishing with high-quality film with wood texture is almost identical to natural veneer.

YAMAHA NS-555 is a three-way passive Hi-Fi system with bass-reflex acoustic design and monopolar radiation. Each speaker contains 4 speakers - 2 low-frequency speakers with a diameter of 170 mm each, one mid-frequency speaker of the same size and a high-frequency tweeter of 25 mm. Dome tweeter made of high-quality artificial silk, on a powerful ferrite magnet with a cooling magnetic fluid. The diffusers in the midrange and bass drivers are made of long fiber paper with a wide suspension that provides a long stroke.

The rated power of the supplied amplification for this system is 170W, which is significantly more than the previous model. The peak is even much higher - 300W. Crossover frequency - 350Hz. Sensitivity - 91dB. The minimum impedance is 4 Ohms, the maximum is 8 Ohms. The range of reproduced frequencies is from 25 to 40 thousand Hz. It is possible to connect using bi-wiring and bi-amping schemes.

This system is characterized by an extremely smooth, almost ideal frequency response with minor nuances in the form of increased sensitivity in the mid-bass. But these nuances are systemic in nature, so Simplerule experts counted them as shortcomings, as well as slightly blurry localization.

On the other hand, the system as a whole shows accurate, detailed, almost monitor-like transmission of audio material. Microdynamics are extremely accurate, excellent transmission of “non-obvious” nuances such as reverberation, overtones, etc.

The manufacturer's assortment includes a much cheaper 2.5-way system HECO Victa Prime 502. It is in many ways similar to the 702 model, but with less expressive characteristics. Also fully consistent with the price.

Advantages

  1. high-quality detailed sound;
  2. natural timbres;
  3. deep and powerful bass;
  4. smooth frequency response with minor “nuances” in the lows;
  5. bi-wiring and bi-amping connection.

Flaws

  1. hypersensitivity in mid-bass;
  2. uncertain localization.

DALI Zensor 5

Rating: 4.7

A conventional mid-class floor-standing speaker system, model Zensor 5, produced by a Danish company under the DALI brand (Danish Audiophile Loudspeaker Industries). Judging by the dry numbers of technical characteristics, this model may seem weaker than a number of previous ones, but this is not a drawback, but only a feature of this particular configuration, and the class of the device is higher here. And let us immediately emphasize, in order to avoid confusion, that here we are considering the passive Zensor 5. The active system is designated by the AX index and costs much more.

So, Zensor 5 is a two-way Hi-Fi speaker system with bass-reflex acoustic design and monopolar radiation. The range of reproduced frequencies is from 43 to 26500 Hz. The minimum recommended input power is 30W, peak power is 150W. Sensitivity – 88dB. Crossover frequency - 2.4 kHz. Impedance – 6 Ohms. The maximum sound pressure is 108 dB.

Dimensions of one column are 162mm wide, 825mm high, 253mm deep, weight – 10.3kg. Each speaker contains three speakers - two low-frequency ones 133 mm in diameter and a dome high-frequency tweeter 25 mm in diameter. The front part of the speakers is covered with black piano lacquer, the body is made of MDF with vinyl trim in three styles - Black Ash (black ash / ash), Light Walnut (light walnut) and solid white. The bass reflex port is placed on the front part as a single unit with a surface without joints.

On the technical side, experts and ordinary users have no complaints about Zensor 5. Here the Danish company confidently maintains a high level and utmost attention to detail. As for the sound, the ratings are also mostly extremely positive. Simplerule specialists are unanimous with their colleagues in their high assessment of spatial sound; they note clear localization of sound sources, stage depth, extremely high resolution at mid frequencies and impeccable dynamics.

Everything described in terms of sound quality is noted in a completely “fresh” system, from the first minutes of listening. After warming up, Zensor 5 will further reveal its potential. At the same time, warming up here is recommended by the manufacturer itself and for at least 50 hours.

Advantages

  1. exceptional quality of materials and workmanship;
  2. high level of acoustics for a relatively reasonable price;
  3. clear localization;
  4. particularly high sound resolution at mid frequencies;
  5. spectacular appearance.

Flaws

  1. bi-wiring connection is not provided.

HECO Music Style 900

Rating: 4.

The second part of the review of the best floor-standing speaker systems according to Simplerule magazine concludes with the most powerful and generally interesting set of two speakers, HECO Music Style 900. On some trading platforms, speakers can be sold separately, so it is advisable to check the package specifically, without relying solely on the description in the catalog .

HECO Music Style 900 is a two-channel three-way passive system with bass-reflex acoustic design and monopolar radiation. The dimensions of one column are 113x22.5x35cm, the weight of the set is 50kg. Each speaker includes 4 speakers: two low-frequency speakers of 165 mm in diameter each, one mid-frequency of the same size and a high-frequency tweeter of 25 mm in diameter.

The system reproduces sound in the range from 25 to 40 thousand Hz. Impedance – 4-8 Ohms. Sensitivity – 91dB. The maximum recommended power input is 300W. Rated power – 170W per channel.

The connection is provided with the possibility of using Bi-Amping and Bi-Wiring circuits. The connectors for connecting cables are gold-plated screw connectors.

Advanced users and experts are largely unanimous in their appreciation of the HECO Music Style 900 as an example of exemplary German quality. In addition, many agree that this is a relatively rare case when a manufacturer makes acoustics specifically for music, and not just for cinema.

HECO Music Style 900 receives strictly positive feedback for high-quality and appropriate materials - silk in the tweeter, paper in the diffuser, high-quality rubber suspension with precise movement. All this, combined with impeccably neat assembly, results in extremely precise and delicate feeding of material with outstanding detail for systems of this class.

We should also praise the system for its wide compatibility with almost any amplifier, both transistor and tube. This is facilitated by the same high quality of materials and workmanship, but to a greater extent still high sensitivity. To fully unlock the potential, a more or less powerful amplifier is still recommended - primarily to obtain full-fledged lows.

There are also suggestions that the most adequate quality of sound material in the HECO Music Style 900 is achievable only with a Bi-Amping connection scheme, but this statement is not universal, and the result will still largely depend on the amplifier.

Advantages

  1. high-quality sound;
  2. good lows;
  3. power;
  4. gold-plated screw connectors;
  5. possibility of connecting Bi-Amping/Bi-Wiring;
  6. magnetic shielding;
  7. appearance.

Flaws

  1. No pronounced disadvantages or systematic comments from users were identified.

SELECTION OF HIGH-END AUDIO SYSTEM

Source: Encyclopedia of High-End Audio Robert Harley Introduction
One of the most important purchasing decisions is choosing a high-quality audio system. Your choice of components will determine how deeply you can experience the art form of music. The wonderful sounds of music can have a profound impact on your life as they become more and more important in your life. A hi-fi system is a powerful tool for music exploration; the better the system, the further it will take you into the world of beauty.

Although the task of selecting hi-fi components seems daunting, a little preparation can help you get closer to the audio system of your dreams without going over your budget. An experienced and well-informed buyer knows that the correct selection of components, their mutual consistency and careful installation are much more important than a large bank account. In this chapter, we will teach you how to become a conscious buyer and show you how you can put together the “most musical” and aesthetic system that suits your financial capabilities.

A high-end audio system consists of many components, each of which has a specific purpose. These components generally fall into three main categories: source components, control components, and playback components.

A source is any device that delivers a sound signal to us using media, which includes radio broadcasts. This is, for example, a CD player that plays audio from CDs. Other sources are record players (vinyl discs), tuners, tape recorders. Source components are located at the very beginning of the playback path.

The category of control components is represented by the pre-amplifier. It receives signals from source components and determines which ones to send to the power amplifier for listening. The preamplifier is the heart of a hi-fi system; All source components are connected to the power amplifier through a pre-amplifier, which controls the audio signal and volume.

The playback components are the power amplifier and loudspeakers, which work together to convert the source signal passed through the preamplifier into sound. In Fig. Figure 2-1 shows a basic system configuration consisting of source components, a preamplifier, a power amplifier, and two speakers.

If you're new to the world of audio, you might want to read the introductory sections of Chapters Five through Twelve before you go shopping for a system. Each of these chapters is devoted to a specific component, and the introductory sections explain the purpose of a particular component, its functions and properties, and the corresponding terminology. Subsequent sections of each of these chapters provide a more in-depth and detailed description of component selection from a sound quality and technical perspective. In this chapter we will look at how to choose a high-end system. Main topics of the chapter:

  • How much of your budget can you allocate to purchase an audio system?
  • Which is better: buy the system as a whole or in parts?
  • How to choose the system that will best suit your needs

2-1 An audio system consisting of source components, a preamplifier, a power amplifier (or full amplifier), and two speakers How much of your budget can you allocate to purchase an audio system

How much to spend on an audio system? This depends on two things: firstly, on your requests, level of needs, and secondly, on financial capabilities. Let's look at priorities first. Some people might think that a $2,000 audio system is an extravagant indulgence, but without batting an eyelid, they'll shell out $7,000 to go to Europe for a couple of weeks. Conversely, another person will consider a vacation to Europe for $7,000 a manifestation of insane extravagance - after all, for that money you can buy so much excellent audio equipment! The first person apparently considers music to be something like fun, simple entertainment - nothing more. For another, enjoying music is a vital aspect of existence. How much of your budget you can spend on a hi-fi system depends on how important music is to you, and only you can decide for yourself. Having a good hi-fi system will certainly enhance the role of music in your life.

But more often, the size of the amount allocated for the purchase is determined by the second factor - your financial capabilities. According to a survey of audiophile magazine readers, in 1991 the average cost of a hi-fi system was no more than 10 percent of annual income (the average audio system costs about $6,300, less than ten percent of annual income of $66,000). The average income of music lovers surveyed was approximately $80,700 per year, with the average cost of an audio system being $9,100. Over the next year, respondents also planned to spend approximately $2,154 on hi-fi components. The figures given can be considered very general. The cost of high-end systems ranges from $2,100 to $200,000. But don't let these impressive numbers fool you! The fact is that readers of audiophile magazines are ardent enthusiasts, and are by no means typical music lovers. You can put together a completely satisfactory music system for much less.

However, I strongly advise you to initially allocate a fairly significant amount of money to purchase a high-end audio system. The expense may seem like a lot, but you will be rewarded handsomely when your favorite music, perfectly reproduced, will sound to you day after day, for many years. After a year or two, you will forget about the costs and the enjoyment will continue, because a high-quality music system is a long-term and promising investment. Moreover, if you buy a really good audio system now, after a while you probably won’t want to sell it or replace it with a new one. Sometimes saving on the quality of an audio system turns out to be false. Therefore, you need to make the right purchase the first time.

There is another approach to determining the budget. Find out first what quality of system satisfies you, let your budget determine this. Visit your dealer and ask him to show you several systems of varying quality levels. You may be completely satisfied with a moderately priced audio system, or you may experience how great music sounds on the best equipment and realize that you simply must have it.

When estimating costs, one more circumstance should be taken into account. Ask yourself: will your audio system only be used for two-channel music playback, or will it also be used to play back movies in your home theater? Providing high quality for a home theater with six speakers (instead of the usual two), and purchasing a multi-channel preamplifier that creates multi-channel stereo sound (instead of two-channel), significantly increases the cost of the audio system. We will touch on this issue briefly in this chapter and then explore it in more detail in Chapter 13.

Which is better: buy the entire system or in parts?

Once financial possibilities have been determined, you need to decide which of the three ways to purchase a hi-fi audio system will be most acceptable for you:

  • Purchase the entire system from the best components.
  • Purchase the entire system made up of components within a limited budget.
  • Purchase several components now, and then expand the system as financial opportunities arise. The first option does not require much thought - all you need is a solid bank account. The buyer of such an audio system does not worry about the budget, upgrading or adding new components. For those music lovers for whom price is not an issue, purchasing high-end audio systems (we'll talk about this later) is quite simple: you just need to allocate a sufficient amount of money, go to the dealer and listen to music at home. Such buyers are beyond the financial constraints that always accompany the other two options for purchasing audio systems. All they have to do is choose the “best” system to then enjoy its sound.

But typically, most of us don't have that kind of budget - we have to live within the budget determined by options 2 or 3. Option 2 is to shell out all the money for a full audio system right away.
With the third option, you spend the entire amount on purchasing a few extremely high-quality components, and then, as funds become available, you buy new components. We will call the second option purchasing a sweat system, and the third – purchasing in parts. Each of these approaches has its advantages and disadvantages. Purchasing a complete system means that your entire budget needs to be spread evenly across all the components that make up your hi-fi audio system. Therefore, you can only spend a limited amount on each component. You may not be able to achieve the desired level of quality, but the system will be ready for immediate use. This approach is suitable for those music lovers who do not think about equipment, but just want to buy a system, install it and forget about everything while listening to music.

Anyone for whom the love of music is a kind of hobby, who cherishes far-reaching plans for the development of their audio system, will prefer to purchase just a few components to begin with, and then build up the system as they accumulate funds. Such a music lover may spend no more than the same amount as the first, but at first he will buy, perhaps, just a couple of loudspeakers, and not the entire system. He will use his old radio or complete amplifier, record player or CD player until he can afford the electronics and signal sources that he really needs. Such a system will initially be limited by the capabilities of the receiver, and therefore will not be able to immediately enjoy all the delights of the new high-end loudspeakers. But when the opportunity finally presents itself to purchase high-quality components, you will end up with an audio system of the highest level. This approach requires patience, persistence and, ultimately, more money. But this is the only way to buy a high-end audio system.

Those music lovers who prefer to purchase equipment piecemeal can take advantage of technological advances. You can start with components that won't change for many years, such as a power amplifier, and hold off on buying things that may become better and cheaper over time: digital processors, CD players, transports, etc. .

Another advantage of adding components to a system over time is that it gives you the opportunity to audition them before purchasing. Instead of assembling an entire system in a dealer's showroom, purchasing components piecemeal allows you to conduct a thorough preliminary audition and select the one that best matches the audio system you already have. This provides a significant advantage in creating a system that suits your musical preferences. Purchasing in parts is more suitable for those for whom music is a serious hobby, who are endlessly devoted to music. Of course, this option for completing the system requires enormous patience.

In short, if you want a good system, forget about the hardware and just enjoy your music, buy the entire system. For the same initial cost, you won't get the same quality system as buying over time, but you'll still benefit from the cost savings and ability to listen to your music immediately. The system works, the music sounds, and there is no need to rack your brains over what next component needs to be purchased... Buying a complete system can be recommended for those fans for whom music is not - and probably never will be - a real hobby. Nevertheless, many amateurs of this kind begin to gradually upgrade their audio systems over time, appreciating the advantages associated with owning top-class equipment.

On the other hand, those music lovers who are limited in funds, but dream of more prestigious equipment and actively participate in the formation of the system, will prefer to build the system gradually. They read magazine articles about audio equipment, visit dealers frequently, and take music devices home to try and evaluate; as a result, they become more sophisticated and demanding listeners and acquire broad knowledge in the field of sound-reproducing equipment.

How to choose the system that will best suit your needs

This section is just a quick overview of how to choose the best sound system; More detailed information on the selection of individual components is given in chapters 5 to 12.

A pickup truck is suitable for a farmer, but a small, compact car is more convenient for a city dweller. In the same way, a hi-fi audio system that is ideal for an apartment in New York will be completely out of place in a large country house. The audio system should not only match your musical tastes (we will look at this issue in the next chapter), but also your room and listening habits.

Many of the recommendations seem quite obvious. First of all, you should correlate the dimensions of the speaker system with the dimensions of your listening room. Large speakers do not work well in small rooms, and vice versa. Large speakers are not only physically overwhelming, they tend to overload the room with bass energy. A speaker that sounds great in a 5 x 8 meter room will likely be too bassy, loud and ponderous in a 4 x 5 meter room. The bass reproduction you've paid so much for (after all, getting deep bass right is very expensive) will work against you if the speaker is placed in too small a room. For the same money, you could buy an excellent mini-monitor that was designed with a focus on delivering excellent upper bass, midrange and treble. With such a mini-monitor, you win twice: firstly, your room will not be overloaded with bass, and secondly, the mini-monitor will certainly have a much better sound stage and sound clarity. There are other benefits: mini-monitors, with their limited frequency response in the low-frequency region, will be less annoying to your neighbors. This way, you can listen to loud music without disturbing anyone. Finally, such a speaker system is much easier to place in a small room.

Conversely, a mini-monitor simply cannot fill a large room with sound. The sense of power, dynamism, deep bass, sense of physical impact that is so delightful in some pieces of music cannot be conveyed by a mini monitor. If you have a hall and funds allow, then it is best to purchase large floor-standing speakers.

Another important consideration is the power of the amplifier. The amplifier must match both the speakers and the room. Large rooms, as well as low-sensitivity speakers, require more amplifier power. These issues will be discussed in more detail in Chapters 6 and 7 on power amplifiers and loudspeakers.

The best high-end floorstanding speakers

Now let's move on to the most interesting part of the review of the best floor-standing speaker systems according to Simplerule magazine. Here we will talk about systems that are close in all respects to the premium class. Let us remind you once again that in our review we introduce the reader to striking examples of high-quality systems available to the mass consumer. Hi-End acoustics with a price of many hundreds of thousands or, even more so, millions of rubles is the topic of a separate review.

Focal Chorus 726

Rating: 4.9

First, let's look at the Chorus 726 system produced by the French private company Focal-JMLab. It was founded in 1979 by audio engineer Jacques Maule. The headquarters is located in Maule's hometown of Saint-Etienne.

Chorus 726 is a passive three-way Hi-Fi system with front bass reflexes and monopolar radiation. The range of reproduced frequencies is from 49 to 28 thousand Hz. The minimum recommended input power is 40W, the maximum is 250W. Sensitivity - 91.5dB. Crossover frequency - 300Hz. Nominal impedance – 8 Ohms, minimum – 2.9 Ohms.

The physical characteristics of the system are as follows. The dimensions of one column are 222mm wide, 990mm high and 343mm deep. Weight - 23.5 kg. The body is made of MDF, the walls are 25mm thick. Inside, the wall surfaces are not parallel to avoid the occurrence of standing waves. Amplifier connection connectors are screw type. The speaker includes four drivers - two low-frequency drivers, each 165mm in diameter, one mid-frequency driver of the same size, and a 25mm tweeter. The design is strict, solid, with noticeable careful attention to detail, impeccable quality of materials and jewelry assembly.

Both experts and ordinary users are unanimous in assessing the technical quality of Chorus 726 - this is truly high-class equipment. The attention to the smallest details, as well as the foresight of the designers and developers, are noticeable and clearly felt here. Thus, in addition to the already mentioned shape of the internal space, the Chorus 726 speakers have the best optimized bass reflexes from an aerodynamic point of view; The speaker cones are made of a special Polyglass material, which, due to its structure (coated paper with glass microbeads included), provides lightness and at the same time rigidity plus internal damping. The crossover here is the same one that was previously installed on the flagship Focal Grande Utopia acoustics.

The sound of the speaker system receives the highest ratings from independent testers, who note exceptionally natural timbres, high detail, collected bass, spacious stage, precise localization and transparent upper register. Some experts note accuracy problems at high frequencies.

Advantages

  1. quality of materials and workmanship;
  2. high technical class;
  3. flagship crossover;
  4. high detail;
  5. precise localization;
  6. spacious stage;

  1. some minor complaints from experts regarding high frequencies.

HECO Aurora 1000

Rating: 4.8

Will continue the selection of the best high-end floor-standing speaker systems Aurora 1000 produced by the German specialized company HECO. The company entered the market back in 1949 and since then has been known throughout the world for high-quality household and professional speaker systems.

Aurora 1000 is a passive Hi-Fi acoustics with a bass-reflex type of acoustic design and monopolar radiation. Unlike the previous and some other described models, the bass reflex in the speakers is located at the rear. This is not to the liking of all users, as it does not allow the speakers to be installed close to the wall. But this, nevertheless, is not a drawback.

The dimensions of one column are 235mm wide, 1200mm high and 375mm deep. Weight – 26.6kg. The speaker contains two low-frequency drivers 200mm in diameter each, one mid-frequency driver 170mm in diameter, and a tweeter 28mm in size. The amplifier connection connectors are gold-plated and screw. A bi-wiring connection diagram is provided.

Compared to all the models described above, the Aurora 1000 has the most impressive power potential. So, the minimum recommended power of the supplied amplification here is 30W, and the maximum is as much as 380W. The system reproduces sound vibrations in the frequency range from 22 to 42500 Hz. Sensitivity - 93dB. Crossover frequency - 260Hz. The minimum impedance is 4 Ohms, the nominal impedance is 8 Ohms.

The Aurora 1000 is the flagship of the Aurora series, and this is noticeable not only because of its impressive price. Experts highly appreciate the meticulous German (in the best sense) approach to the smallest nuances. The rigid body received additional internal reinforcement to eliminate even the slightest possibility of resonances and overtones. Each column is installed on a special metal podium through massive metal pendulum spikes with adjustable height.

In terms of sound, experts highlight in this model high resolution, the finest transmission of microdynamics, precise localization, clear focusing of sound images, a generally coherent scene and a number of other positive aspects.

Advantages

  1. series flagship;
  2. high technical level;
  3. great power potential;
  4. wide range of reproduced frequencies;
  5. clear localization;
  6. precise microdynamics;

Flaws

  1. No obvious disadvantages were found.

DALI OPTICON 8

Rating: 4.8

And this part of the review of the best floor-standing speaker systems according to Simplerule magazine will be completed by another bright product of the famous Danish company - premium acoustics DALI OPTICON 8. This is the most expensive model compared to all previous ones, it is almost twice as expensive as even the very expensive HECO Aurora 1000. In the DALI assortment there is a junior model of the same series - OPTICON 6, which, of course, is inferior to the G8 in everything, but is much cheaper.

The acoustic profile of OPTICON 8 is the same as that of most other systems in the review: bass-reflex acoustic design, monopolar radiation. The system is 3.5 lanes, passive type with great power potential. The operating frequency range is from 38 to 32 thousand Hz. Sensitivity – 88dB. Crossover frequency - 390Hz. Maximum sound pressure - 112 dB. Nominal impedance – 4 Ohms. The minimum recommended input amplification power is 40W, the maximum is 300W.

The dimensions of each speaker in the DALI OPTICON 8 system are 241 mm in width, 1140 in height and 450 mm in depth. Weight – 34.8kg. Gold-plated screw terminals, bi-wiring connection possible. Each speaker contains two woofers measuring 203.2mm in diameter, one mid-range driver measuring 165mm, one high-frequency dome driver 28mm and an additional ribbon ultra-high-frequency driver measuring 17x45mm.

In terms of the quality of technical performance, OPTICON 8 does not raise the slightest doubt - the premium class here is clearly visible in the quality of the components and impeccable assembly. The quality and high cost (in a good sense) of materials are also clearly visible to any specialist.

In terms of assessing sound quality, some negativity can only come from those who have specific prejudices towards speaker systems of the DALI brand. Otherwise, experts agree on the high characteristics of natural timbres, correct placement of accents, detail, resolution and other standard parameters.

Opticon 8 can be confidently recommended for large rooms - the impressive potential for power and scale of delivery will allow the system to truly “unfold”.

Advantages

  1. reputable brand;
  2. premium class;
  3. exceptional quality and attention to detail;
  4. great power potential;
  5. possibility of connecting via bi-wiring;
  6. additional ultra-high frequency emitter;
  7. spectacular appearance.

Flaws

  1. subjective comments from “haters” of all DALI acoustics.

The best acoustics for the floor: meaning and specifics of installation and configuration

The best floor-standing speakers for the home are not necessarily the most expensive speaker model whose characteristics you liked. Of great importance for the sound quality of floor-standing acoustics is the correct installation of them (in this case, the direction and location of the bass reflex hole must be taken into account) and the preliminary preparation of the platforms on which the sound equipment will be placed. Such platforms for floor-standing speakers, made of non-resonating material, are equipped with spikes with metal linings - this allows you to avoid scratching the floor surface and at the same time suppress a number of interferences.

Professional setup of floor-standing speakers is another link in the chain of actions that would allow you to fully unleash the full potential of the purchased equipment. Hi-Fi Design specialists will perform, at your request, the full range of installation work and configuration of not only floor-standing acoustics, but also other home theater equipment and audio systems of any complexity.

The best 5.1 and 7.1 floorstanding speakers

And at the end of our review, we will pay attention to one of the most popular formats of speaker systems in everyday life, which are most often equipped with home theaters. These are 5.1 and 7.1 multi-channel systems. Compatibility with our theme here is evident in the characteristics of the leading front speakers - they are massive and designed for floor installation.

MT-Power Elegance-2 5.1
