The most advanced family of loudspeakers
Floor-standing speaker system.
high-end designs for many years to come. Equipped with all the new technologies of the 800 Diamond , the reference 801 D4 is the pinnacle of excellence.
40 years of excellence
Innovation. They define the essence of 801 D4 . In each of its incarnations over many decades, the 801 has always been the most advanced of its kind, a showcase of the latest technology and the most original thinking. Like a real miracle, she has always become a standard.
Highest Achievement
The 801 D4 is the flagship and most powerful model in the new 800 Diamond . The uncompromising design embodies all the most advanced technologies in their purest, optimized form, along with the highest quality crossover components. Do you want the best acoustics? Here she is…
Ideal Matrix
The matrix structure of interconnected panels strengthens the cabinet in all directions, suppresses resonances and creates a more believable soundstage. The rib matrix in the 801 D4 is the ultimate solution, upgraded with extensive aluminum plates to reinforce key components.
Bionic gimbal
Sometimes, to make a big change, you need to think outside the box. The new bionic surround improves midrange quality by significantly reducing the air pressure and sound coloration associated with a traditional fabric centering washer. Result? Incredible midrange transparency.
Floor-standing speaker system.
For listeners who crave the sound quality of the 800 Diamond but prefer a more traditional look, the 804 D4 is the perfect choice. The new body and base make it the best of all 804s.
Classic quality
The 804 D3 may look more traditional than the other floorstanding speakers in the 800 Diamond , but it's just as sophisticated. Its reverse-curved body is both a mechanical and acoustic revolution in its class, and its new base provides a solid foundation for precise bass response.
Reverse curved body
Instead of a conventional 'box', the 804 D4's is made from solid bent laminated wood, with the speakers mounted at the center of the curvature. This more rigid and inert structure resists mechanical resonances much better and also provides better sound dispersion.
Aluminum base
A great speaker requires a strong foundation. The new 804 D4 features a downward-facing Flowport through an aluminum base, with a damping layer and steel plate to suppress unwanted resonances. Significantly improved studs underneath for maximum stability and durability.
Aluminum top plate
Each model in the new 800 Diamond features a significantly redesigned body with a new aluminum top plate. It provides the perfect fit for Connolly , with luxurious black leather for dark cabinets and light gray for light finishes.
Bookshelf speaker for installation on stands.
805 D4 bookshelf speaker is the smallest model in the 800 Diamond , but features cutting-edge technology such as a diamond tweeter and its own massive enclosure on top.
Little diamond
The 805 D4 may be smaller than its floor-standing siblings, but it's anything but lightweight: its beautiful reverse-curve cabinet and the durable aluminum frame of the 165mm Continuum deliver exceptionally solid bass and sound dimension for such a compact speaker.
Diamond tweeter
One of the most important developments of the last 20 years is the ultra-stiff, extremely precise diamond dome tweeter - the perfect combination of low mass, exceptional rigidity and outstanding precision.
Crossover at the back
The 805 D4's new reverse-curved cabinet allows the sensitive crossover components to be mounted in a separate section inside, which is critical for sound quality and ease of service.
Massive tweeter housing
The new massive tweeter-top body has an elongated shape, with a longer load tube, resulting in an even freer, more open sound at high frequencies. The mechanically decoupled body is machined from a single piece of aluminum for better resonance suppression.
Center channel speaker system.
This is a powerful speaker that has the size and fullness of the midrange to perfectly match the sound quality of its front-facing partners.
In the center of everything
The center channel is without a doubt the most important channel in a home cinema - and the HTM81 D4 has an enviable list of advanced technologies to enhance this role, including a massive cabinet-mounted tweeter, a Continuum and dual 200mm bass drivers with Aerofoil diffusers .
Aerofoil LF driver
Aerofoil profile remains the outstanding solution to the problem of combining low mass and high rigidity - thanks to a carbon shell and a variable profile foam core. It also uses an anti-resonance cap to reduce distortion and deliver even cleaner bass.
Aluminum bass bases
The HTM81 D4 two Aerofoil drivers mounted in two massive aluminum frames, each mounted in an aluminum plate attached to the stiffest part of the curved cabinet. These rigid parts provide ideal mechanical placement for powerful bass drivers.
Where form follows function.
Bowers & Wilkins 804 D4 - a significant upgrade over its predecessor!
The Dutch magazine “hifi.nl” (September 27, 2021) published the very first article reviewing the Bowers Wilkins 804 D4 speaker systems from the new 800 Diamond series.
Author Jamie Biesemans, who has already managed to promptly write a report on the presentation of the new 800 Series at the Abbey Road studio (07 September 2021), highly appreciated the numerous improvements and enhancements of this more affordable model, noted its advantages and gave the maximum rating - 5 stars!
SUMMARY
The 804 D4 is a significant upgrade over its predecessor. Numerous improvements and enhancements, previously reserved only for models with "turbine heads", have brought its price higher than before. But this extra price premium will seem well worth it once you meet and listen to the Bowers & Wilkins 804 D4 for yourself.
Advantages
• Vastly improved, more detailed and high-quality bass • Impressive, holographic soundstage • Stunning resolution, showing literally everything in the recordings on all materials • Luxurious design • Relatively insensitive to placement
Here is what the author wrote in the article entitled “REVIEW BOWERS WILKINS 804 D4: EEN NIEUWE KLASSIEKER” - “BOWERS WILKINS 804 D4: NEW CLASSICS”:
“When Bowers & Wilkins introduces the new 800 Series, the focus is always on the highest quality Bowers & Wilkins 800 turbine head models. But the model that really intrigues us this time is the more traditional floorstanding 804 D4, which has been completely redesigned for this new generation. Has it taken a major step towards the quality of the older 800 Series speakers?”
“In the 800 series, most music lovers dream of models with a turbine head. Especially about the top model, the 801 (or in the previous generation D3: 800 D3), which makes the hearts of many music lovers beat faster. But they can only hope to win the lottery, because this flagship not only has a high price, but also requires a more spacious listening room. So, not only do you have to draw the winning ticket to buy these speakers and the associated electronics, but you also have to move into a beautiful villa or a trendy loft in a former warehouse. That’s why in this review we’ll focus on the more traditional and affordable 804 D4.”
“Some people say this is the least 'sexy' of the new 800 D4 models, but guess what? They are wrong - for various reasons. This is, after all, the model that is likely to be the best-selling model based on the sales figures of previous generations. Of course, when we heard this from a representative from Bowers & Wilkins, we were a little surprised. For years, we've seen the 804 as a stepping stone to the next turbine-headed 800 Series, an acoustic that would lure people into the store first and then seduce people on the spot with the sexier 803s. But this reasoning turned out to be incorrect. What about making uncritical assumptions that are too hasty?”
“The first thing you notice about the 804 D4 is that it is much less angular than its predecessor. However, Bowers & Wilkins didn't just make this speaker a little rounder, they radically transformed it. The 804 D4, like the more compact 805 D4, features the same reverse-curve body found on the third-generation turbine head models. You'll have to watch the video to find out what's so special about it; It's quite impressive to see how the different layers of wood are layered on top of each other during manufacturing and then pressed into a convex U-shape under enormous pressure."
“The ends of this bulbous body are mounted in a massive aluminum block with cooling fins at the back. If you approach the 804 D4 from the rear, its lines will also seem very smooth. And this is important, because in some interiors - we again remember our thoughts about the attic - you will actually encounter this back side there.”
“Some adjustments were made to the design, of course, just to make the speakers more beautiful. The layer of black Connolly leather on top is mostly luxury in our opinion, but the aluminum plate underneath makes the nearly 37kg speaker even more durable. This is good; because the body should vibrate as little as possible. The 804 D4 is a really heavy thing, although it doesn't feel that massive when we park it in our testing room."
“If you don't like black polish, you can also get 804 D4 in one of three other shades. Satin White - white and Rosenut - pink walnut were on the menu before, a new product is an edition finished with walnut veneer - Walnut. We were able to admire it at the Series launch event, and as far as we can tell, it is the most beautiful version yet. It's amazing how this walnut finish combines with the metal and leather accents on top, in this case in light grey. Beautiful and modern."
“The key feature of a good speaker system is that it literally “disappears” as you listen. Press PLAY and... bam - you are transported to either a dirty basement club, an industrial building with techno equipment, or a church in the mountains of Norway. The 804 D4 acoustics have this quality, perhaps even more so than the more pronounced, slightly more noticeable D3 generation in our memory. If the speakers "disappear" like the 804 D4, then you will be truly delighted by the excellent album "J. S. Bach: Brandenburg Concertos", recorded this spring in Berlin at the Christuskirche by the Akademie Der Alte Musik. It is as if you are right in this temple, enjoying the lush atmosphere in which each musician individually reveals the melody and contributes to the fascinating compositions of the great master of religious music. So we always wanted to turn up the volume control to further enjoy the many nuances that Bach included in his compositions, such as the important sounding hunting horns in the fast first movement of No. 1 in F major, or the sounds of the recorder in No. 4, which is clearly and naturally presented by the 804 D4 speakers - right above the orchestra."
“We then selected a playlist created by Roon based on the works of John Williams, which led us to a vibrant version of the William Tell Overture by Arthur Fiedler. This is another musical cliché, but sometimes it's acceptable. You can alternate fine dining with a bag of fries, right? This version is modern and populist and really fun to listen to on Bowers & Wilkins. Beautifully presented horns blow lightly, accompanied by some sharp accompaniment from manic percussion, and the strings are firing on all cylinders – the 804 D4 is on the right track in terms of rhythm display. Towards the end of this track you find yourself stuck with your hands already in the air, conducting the ghosts.
The Killers have always been more than just a Las Vegas party band, and with Pressure Machine they prove that in no uncertain terms. No epic rock and roll this time, but rather acoustic tracks that revolve around small human themes from life in the middle part of the USA, which is far from the metropolises on the East and West Coasts. This album remains "too over-produced", but this is not a disadvantage for a band that loves to layer tunes on top of each other. On a wireless speaker, a track like "Quiet Town" sounds like a wall of sound, but here, thanks to Bowers & Wilkins, we get a much more layered and delicate experience. Here you can hear soft synth tones, a guitar part with a fuzz pedal that appears periodically here and there, as well as the melancholy voice of Brandon Flower in the middle... the coherence and consistency of the sound is great.”
“The 804 D4 is a winner in this area, and it proves that good high-end speakers provide added value and value in more popular genres. Not everyone listens to Bach. You can certainly debate the brand's tonal balance choices in the past, but if there's one thing Bowers & Wilkins does exceptionally well, it's placing instruments and vocals on a precise soundstage."
“We had to gradually pack up the 804 D4 to ship back to Bowers & Wilkins just before Amon Tobin released his new album, How Do You Live. Therefore, we decided to end the listening with a 2022 release - “Long Stories”, more similar to the trance work of the Brazilian drum&bass pioneer “Sounds like Moths”. We found “Brushed Aluminum Reeds” and “Atkinson Sky” to be convincingly soaring and trance-inducing, with sharp synth sounds that soar powerfully and (on “Atkinson Sky”) almost palpably rise up into the room. The new Flowport bass reflex port does its job very well because rare bass tones are displayed with great clarity and detail. This is truly a massive upgrade to the speakers. It also makes the 804 D4 a true star in songs that are driven by a relentless rhythm, such as Modeselektor's "Mean Boyfriend". In short, everything is there to create a very convincing overall picture.”
CONCLUSION
The Bowers Wilkins 804 D4 acoustic model is a significant upgrade over its predecessor. Numerous improvements and enhancements, previously reserved only for models with "turbine heads", have brought its price higher than before. But this extra price premium will seem well worth it once you meet and listen to the Bowers & Wilkins 804 D4 for yourself. Clarity of sound, high resolution, detection and demonstration of the smallest details and realistic performance are their strengths. It's difficult for us to compare this model to the higher-end speakers in the new 800 Series due to the fact that we haven't listened to them much, but it's clear that the 804 D4 is a very high-end speaker system.

This is the fourth model in B&W's flagship 800 series of speakers that tempts us, and we, in turn, readers; she is also the fourth oldest in it. In our opinion, the B&W 804D2 are also the most “homey” speakers in this line: they do not need halls, like the older two, or large rooms, like the 803s. The bookshelf 805s are also quite cozy, but they have natural range limitations, although they are quite bassy for their size.
The relatively small rounded bodies of the pair provided to us for testing are pleasing to the eye. They are made from 3.5 cm plywood by pressing into shape; from the inside - guarding the purity of sound - a “matrix” system of spacers. The protective grilles are attached with magnets; there are no holes for them on the front panel. The quality of workmanship combined with elegance and size gives rise to associations with other luxury items - beautiful, but rather useless. But, like other speakers in the series, the 804D2 is a real treasure trove of technical solutions. We have already written about many of them - a diamond tweeter, a Nautilus tube, a dual magnetic drive, stiffening ribs, a proprietary bass reflex port; there is something else in the sidebar, and it’s time to move on to our impressions of the sound of the 804D2.
It would seem that the components of the B&W flagship line of speakers are the same, but the “sum of technology” always turns out to be different. Of course, their characters have a lot in common, such as transparency and detail in sound, clear focus and well-developed stage, controlled bass, and tonal neutrality. What impressed us with the 804s was the dynamic resolution - the ability to quickly and accurately turn the slightest changes in the level of an electrical signal, much less inertial in nature than the moving parts of the drivers, into sound waves. When playing music, this property provides the highest emotionality; Moreover, the more complex it is in its dynamics, the more impressive this effect is. Beethoven's Appassionata is one of the most passionate, dramatic and frantic works of world culture; and how important it is to adequately convey it to the listener. With an excellent recording and excellent performance (SACD Ludvig van Beethoven. Complete piano sonatas. Igor Tchetuev) B&W 804D2 make us hold our breath to follow every note, a complex interweaving of motifs and associations. It is the impeccable elaboration of dynamics that gives such a jolt to the senses; To be fair, let’s also add here the tonal balance and stunning clarity of the piano’s image.
It's impossible to pick a genre that would be preferable for the B&W 804D2, but the vocals are worth noting. He is good, so to speak, in any form. Opera lovers listening to SACD Puccini. La Boheme. Bertrand ie Billy. Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks will have the opportunity to visit the auditorium and enjoy the beautiful voices of such stars as A. Netrebko and R. Villazon; the effect of presence is simply amazing. Not bel canto, but no less expressive and original singing of Tori Amos (CD The Beekeeper) is perfectly balanced with rhythmic and powerful musical accompaniment, which not every speaker can achieve. The songs of the 16th century performed by Sting on the vinyl record Songs From the Labyrinth impress with their originality and also the remarkable integration of unique vocals and the now forgotten lute. The B&W 800 Series juniors are highly talented members of a proud family, delivering refined and energetic performances of music. With them you can both get to the essence of any, even the most complex work, and get a lot of pleasure from simple but talented compositions.
