Measurements
Technical Note
The frequency response is almost ideal, there is no imbalance (0.03 dB is beyond the threshold of audibility), the THD is uniform and very low. The signal-to-noise ratio of 94 dB leaves much to be desired. The channel separation of the built-in decoders is quite high, but the symmetry cannot be called ideal - the interpenetration in the rear is slightly greater than in the front. The spectrum of the output signal can be considered clean (the difference harmonic at –90 dB does not count), the pulses are processed perfectly. The white balance is almost standard, the color transitions are excellent. No significant problems were found in the MFC of the video path. There is no jitter.

User reviews
The pioneer, starting with the 545 model in 2002 and in my opinion to this day, does everything according to the picture. Expensive models actually have color noise suppressors, it works great, especially check the first part of the first edition matrix. On a regular DVD there is green noise, but the Pioneer cleans the picture. Among the disadvantages of expensive ones, sometimes you can still see how digitization is going. The funny thing here was that 545 branded discs without noise played probably clearer even than 747. But the slightly left disc with a not very good image 747 pulls it out, cleaning up the noise.
Grade: *****
Unfortunately, over time it turned out that this device is still demanding on disks. There are also problems when moving to the second layer.
Grade: ***
You can already buy Blu-ray, you say? Or maybe HD-DVD. So what are we going to buy? I'd rather buy the DVD. And 989 is one of the best candidates. And let the next battle between the beaver and the donkey (or good and evil) go on without me.

DVD player Pioneer DV-989AVi
Introducing the top-of-the-line (at the time of writing) DVD player from Pioneer. According to the tradition adopted by Pioneer, a player of this class is equipped with an i.LINK interface (IEEE1394), the function of which is to transmit stereo and multi-channel sound in digital form when playing discs of any type and to organize the collaboration of compatible components. However, the development of the HDMI interface eliminates some of the advantages of i.LINK. Is there a place in the sun for two interfaces that partly perform equal functions, given that HDMI also transmits video in digital form?
Specifications and price
Placed on a separate page.
Outside
The player is large and heavy. The player's design is a classic Hi-Fi style, with its asceticism and brushed metal. Metal, however, is not everywhere - buttons and some other elements are made of plastic with a silver coating. However, the front panel is metal, made of aluminum alloy. Its only purely decorative element is a longitudinal recess with a triangular cross-section.
In the center of the front panel, behind a tinted plexiglass insert, there is a display. The display is relatively large (although the area of the insert is several times larger than the area of the display itself), quite bright (brightness can be changed with the remote control button), informative - there are indicator icons for some modes, shows the section number (two familiar places), track number (three familiar places) and the current /remaining time (3+2 acquaintances).
Below the insert is the DVD drive tray. To the left of the tray there is a power button that completely de-energizes the player (when the player is turned on, a blue LED lights up in its center), a red standby mode indicator, and 3 buttons (in the center of two there are red LEDs indicating the corresponding modes). To the right of the tray are 6 more buttons. All connectors are located on the rear panel.
The left side of the rear panel contains mostly analog and digital audio outputs, while the center contains analog video outputs.
Note the proprietary power connector - without a grounding contact. The player stands on archaic round and tall legs with rubber washers. As a last resort, it can be placed directly on the A/V system unit - and the likelihood of damage is minimal, and space for air circulation is provided.
The remote control has ambiguous ergonomics. It is bulky, there are few buttons, but they are mostly small, as are the labels for them. There is LED backlighting (turned on by the side button), but only the seven buttons in the center are illuminated.
But the remote control is equipped with a large wheel, in the center of which there is a five-way joystick (four directions and pressing in the center - input). The joystick and wheel are very easy to use. By default, slow rotation of the wheel enables slow motion viewing (clockwise - forward, counterclockwise - backward, the greater the rotation angle, the faster), and fast rotation - fast forwarding at different speeds. Pressing the JOG MODE (the red indicator lights up) changes the function of the wheel - it now controls frame-by-frame viewing. True, these functions of the wheel are duplicated by the remote control buttons. On the back panel of the player there are two mini-jack connectors designed to organize communication between Pioneer components - transmitting commands received by one component to another.
Inside
After opening the player, we realized why it was so heavy. The casing and chassis are made of thick iron, an iron tray is screwed to the bottom of the player, covering technological holes and protruding screws, two metal braces give the body additional rigidity, the DVD drive uses metal (non-light alloy) elements, and the audio card is mounted on a thick screen tray tin.
The layout of the elements reveals the desire of the developers to isolate the analog audio part from all other blocks. The audio card components are powered from a separate transformer (not switching!) power supply. There are 3 pieces on the audio board. two-channel DACs PCM1738EG (24-bit, 192 kHz, SNR 117 dB, THD+N 0.0004%). In full accordance with the recommended circuit, 3 two-channel op-amps are connected to the outputs of the DACs. Only for the rear, center and low-frequency channels are JRC 5532D used, and for the front ones - OPA2134PA (THD+N 0.00008, IMD -98 dB) of a higher class.
The main board contains chips responsible for controlling the drive, decoding streams, outputting video signals in digital and analog forms, etc. Presumably the functions are distributed as follows: Sony CXD2753R - SACD stream decoding, PE5286B - DVD decoder, PD6345A - controller, PD0280B - scaler , PD5787A and TSB43CA42Z - serve i.LINK, SiI9030CTU - HDMI transmitter. Some of the chips, in particular video DACs, are located on the back side of the board, which we did not get to. There are no complaints about the installation - everything is very neat, the cables are fixed, etc.
Localization
The player comes with a user manual in Russian. At the time of writing, it could not be downloaded from the company’s Russian website. The manual is very detailed. This is where localization ends. The settings menu and messages are in English or any other of the six available European languages.
The Cyrillic alphabet in the names of files and folders is not displayed if the file name is entirely in Russian - it changes to T_nnn (nnn is a serial number). Our copy of the player was labeled as the second zone, but played DVD-Video from the first and fifth zones without any problems.

The player implements standard functions for playing DVD-Video: there are slow-motion and frame-by-frame viewing modes, going to the disc and chapter menu, selecting audio tracks, etc. Among the interesting functions, we note the function of randomly selecting the next section or chapter and the function of displaying a lot of useful information when pressing the DISPLAY .
Of the multimedia file formats, only MP3 is supported and only with sampling rates of 44 and 48 kHz (supported bitrate starts from 96 kbps). Apparently, only files of this quality are worthy of support by the reference player, and the MP3 format was chosen because of its popularity. It's unlikely that with just paying for a license and a little work, you couldn't implement support for, for example, WMA. MP3, by the way, can only be played from a CD (ROM/R/RW), and the player recognizes, as stated, 250 folders + files maximum. The contents of MP3 discs can be viewed by entering the HOME MENU and selecting Disc Navigator .
Three bookmark lists will show: what is the disc with MP3, the folders of the disc with MP3, the contents of the current folder. In the lists, long names remain about a dozen characters, but under the lists there is a line where more of them are displayed. It is noteworthy that the player displays long versions of names in the case of discs only with ISO 9660, without Joliet. By starting a music file to play, you can navigate through all the folders on the disk without stopping playback. When playing MP3, the player moves to the next folder, that is, by default all MP3 discs are played. There are modes for repeating a disc, folder, track and track fragment, random selection of a track on a disc and a programmed playback order (24 positions, but the list can also contain folders). MP3 tracks can be fast forwarded or rewinded, but there is no time jump. The player does not display information from tags. The pause between MP3 tracks of one folder can reach 0.6 s, the beginning and end of the track are practically not muffled. The disc navigator can be removed or not displayed on the screen at all, and the DISPLAY .
Testing the video path
Video output operating modes are configured in the settings menu.
For quick (and emergency) switching between progressive and interlaced modes, you can use the button on the front panel. The transcoder is switched by tricky manipulation of the buttons, described in the manual. In the vast majority of cases, you should select AUTO , or at least check that this particular transcoder mode is selected, that is, it is disabled. For HDMI, SD modes (progressive and interlaced), 720p, 1080i are available, and, it seems, in the case of NTSC you can enable VGA - 640 by 480 pixels. For component - only SD. HDMI switches to RGB, extended RGB, 12-bit and 8-bit component modes.

The picture is very clear. With an S-Video connection, the signs of alternating colors in the world of color clarity are preserved up to 210 TVL - this is the current record. The colors are correct, there are no artifacts when reproducing test patterns and movie fragments, weak gradations of shades are clearly visible in both highlights and shadows. In progressive modes, the player composes a frame from adjacent fields. The operation of the deinterlacing function is affected by two configurable parameters - Prog. Motion and PureCinema . You can play with them, but it’s easier to set PureCinema to Auto2 and enjoy the progressive picture - in this mode the likelihood of artifacts is minimal, and the quality of progressive conversion is maximum (for most of the fragments watched). Auto2 the latter is relevant for movies on DVD NTSC format), there are the beginnings of edge smoothing, and we did not see any combs even in very complex cases. The video noise suppression function (it has two parameters - separate adjustment for brightness and color components) works smoothly - the noise is reduced, but the tail of unresolved noise behind moving objects does not attract attention.
The player has several preset profiles with image settings (three for analog video outputs and three for HDMI); three profiles are allocated for custom combinations of settings.
Audio path testing
Our test CD-DA and MP3 via the S/PDIF interface are transmitted one-to-one with the original recording, there is no point in presenting the corresponding test results. The player, unfortunately, forcibly lowers the sampling frequency of the test DVD-Audio (24 bit, 96 kHz) to 48 kHz. The player probably believes, and perhaps rightly so, that DVD-R/RW can only contain counterfeit material. For RMAA, 96 kHz must be reconstructed; as a result of repeated resampling, the original signal is distorted, and tests cannot characterize the quality of the digital output.

The quality of the analog output is very good. Enabling the PURE AUDIO (which turns off video and all digital outputs) does not lead to a noticeable improvement in sound, but, just in case, tests were carried out in this mode. We note the high dynamic range and low level of nonlinear and intermodulation distortions. It's interesting to compare the DV-989AVi-S with the inexpensive Pioneer DV-696AV player. The latter has a slightly similar dynamic range, a little more intermodulation distortion, but the level of nonlinear distortion is approximately the same, and it received an “excellent” rating for frequency response. However, it is not a fact that the numbers can fully characterize the sound quality of players of the DV-989AVi-S class.
The player is equipped with two digital interfaces capable of transmitting uncompressed multi-channel audio - HDMI and i.LINK. There are several fundamental differences between them, if we limit ourselves to sound transmission: HDMI is more common, most modern receivers and TVs are equipped with it, i.LINK is most easily found in receivers from Pioneer; via HDMI, 5.1 sound from DVD-Audio with protection is transmitted only to devices compatible with this protection, via i.LINK - always; The SACD stream is not transmitted via HDMI (and optical and coaxial outputs), but via i.LINK - please.
In the settings menu, the user can enable multi-channel sound mode, adjust channel delays by indicating the distance to the speakers, enable the mode of simulating multiple channels on stereo speakers, configure the operating modes of digital outputs, etc.
conclusions
Pioneer DV-989AVi is the result of the evolution of the line of top-end DVD players from Pioneer. The video path of the player has not undergone noticeable changes; it has “sufficient” quality. Regarding the sound, it is interesting to note a separate power supply unit for the analog part of the audio path and the use of high-quality op-amps in the front/stereo channel, which differ from those used in the center/low-frequency and rear channels. If there is a positive result from these improvements, it is not determined instrumentally.
If you use the player as a digital sound source, then it is logical to connect it to a receiver from Pioneer and, of course, via i.LINK. However, in fact, the main advantage of i.LINK is the ability to transmit an SACD stream. Otherwise, connecting via HDMI to a modern receiver that supports all modes and protection technologies will be no worse.
