Chargers for AirPods: which ones work, tips and best options

4.5/5 — (10 votes)

Bluetooth headphones (HeadSet), thanks to their wireless connection, are gaining popularity among users. However, despite their advantages, they also have some disadvantages with charging wireless headphones, which are associated with the use of built-in miniature power sources in the design.

Charging principles

In addition to the fact that batteries are afraid of moisture, temperature changes, and external physical influences, their durability is also greatly influenced by the correctness of charging.

Due to the presence of rechargeable batteries, HeadSet may vary:

  • operating time from one full charge;
  • charging time to 100% capacity;
  • the number of additional recharges if there are docking stations;
  • short-term recharging and operating time after it.

The charging principles for all wireless models are the same and imply:

  • use as charging devices only those devices (cables, charging boxes, network adapters, etc.) that come with the headset
  • or permitted by the manufacturer's instructions;
  • not exceeding the operating time from 1 charge, which can lead to a complete loss of capacity of the power supply;
  • monitoring the charging process so that the batteries reach 100% capacity, but do not remain connected to the AC adapter or other power device;
  • impossibility of simultaneously charging batteries and listening to music.

Depending on the type of regular and true wireless TWS headphones and the type of over-ear, earbuds or plugs, HeadSet design, charging methods are used:

  • using a special cable connected to wireless headphones via a special connector, and to an external source via the USB-A port;
  • through the charging dock, which is also a larger capacity battery and serves to recharge TWS headphones multiple times, as well as
  • a case for storing and carrying them;
  • using wireless charging devices.

To ensure the batteries last longer, charge them strictly according to the instructions included with the headphones.

Beats models

The best wireless models released by Beats (a subsidiary of Apple since 2014) include:

  1. Beats Powerbeats 3 - ordinary (the plugs are connected to each other by wire) vacuum HeadSet with 12 hours of continuous playback, as well as the ability to quickly charge for about 5 minutes using Fast Fuel technology with subsequent operation for 1 hour).
  2. Beats Solo 3 Wireless are ordinary on-ear Bluetooth headphones with 40 hours of battery life on a single charge and 3 hours after a five-minute charge.
  3. Powerbeats Pro are sports in-ear TWS headphones with an autonomy of up to 9 hours from fully charged batteries and 24 hours from the case battery (with fast charging 5 minutes - operating time 1.5 hours).

The first two wireless models are charged from a USB-A/Micro USB cable.

Powerbeats Pro headphones come from a charging dock that can be charged from power sources using a USB-A to Lightning cable.

The LEDs on the HeadSet indicate the charged battery capacity:

  • if there is no charging, the indicator does not light;
  • low state of charge - the indicator lights up or flashes red;
  • batteries are charged - the indicator is white.

Apple AirPods

There are 2 models available, differing in the charging box. Both models' cases can be charged with a USB-A to Lightning cable, but the AirPods 2 dock has wireless charging.

Battery life without recharging is from 4.5 to 5 hours, listening time with a charging case is 24 hours.

AirPods do not provide accelerated charging, since the built-in batteries of the earbuds, placed in the case, gain capacity from 0 to 100% in 20 minutes.

Charging information can be found by the color of the indicator, which is located inside the charging case for AirPods 1, and outside for AirPods 2.

If the wireless headphones are inside the case, the color of the indicator will indicate the state of the battery of the earbuds themselves, and when they are removed, the state of the docking station battery.

The color of the indicator means the following:

  • yellow - the earbuds are charging, or the case needs to be recharged;
  • green - batteries are charged.

Information about the battery capacity of wireless earbuds and a case can be obtained on the screen of an Apple gadget paired with wireless TWS headphones.

Charging instructions for popular models

There are many models of wireless headphones, and it is difficult to list the nuances of charging all of them. Therefore, we will look at this process using the most popular brands and models as an example.

JBL T205BT

This Bluetooth headset does not have a case - the phones are connected by a common wire, which houses the electronic box, controls and battery.

To charge this model, a microUSB connector is used, into which a microUSB/USB-A cable is inserted. You can charge the device using a computer or laptop's USB port, a 5-volt USB-A wall charger, or a power bank that supports low-power charging. While charging, the LED next to the socket will blink or glow red. When the battery is charged, the color of the light changes to white. On average, charging the gadget takes about 2 hours.

JBL T205BT Headphones charging

Apple AirPods (Pro)

Probably the most expensive Apple wireless headphones to date. They are two independent devices and can be used separately. They come with a case (box) that doubles as a charging station and power bank.

These bluetooth headphones can only be charged in the box included in the package. To do this, install headphones (or a headset) into the case and that’s it - charging will start automatically. Charging indicator - LED on the case. The status of the headset batteries can be judged by the color of the indicator.

The case itself can be charged using the included Lightning to USB-A cable. The case itself can be charged using the included Lightning to USB-A cable, but can also be charged via the USB-A port on your PC/laptop, a 5V wall charger, or a power supply that supports charging low-power devices.

Charging AirPods with a cable

Unlike its predecessor, AirPods, the Pro version also supports wireless charging. Unfortunately, a charging station must be purchased. Here the algorithm is even simpler. Let's turn on the wireless docking station and place the suitcase on it. Charging will start automatically. Charging time depends on the condition of the headset batteries. If the batteries are completely discharged, then after 2-3 hours the headphones are charged 100%.

Charge AirPods Pro using the Wireless Dock

Important: If the headset is installed in a case, the headset indicator shows the battery status of the headset. Otherwise, the battery condition.

Xiaomi, Haylou, QCY

As an example, consider the charging instructions for the TWS model:

  1. Install the headset into the factory case with the preloaded load.

  1. Make sure the protective film on the headphone terminals is completely removed.
  2. Leave for the time recommended by the manufacturer.
  3. Analyze the color change of the light - when fully charged, the light will go out or change color.

If the wireless headphones of the brands in question do not charge, then most likely the reason is hidden in the lack of their contact with the contacts of the case. Therefore, they should be removed and checked for the absence of a protective film on the contact fields. Also, when installing them into the housing, make sure that they are completely seated in their housing.

Beats Studio Wireless

These phones are slightly larger than the ones described above, so they are more convenient for use in the studio, although nothing prevents them from working with outdoor devices. The main mode of operation is wireless, but if necessary, you can also use regular wired phones with the appropriate cable (included in the package).

Important: Battery energy is also consumed during cable operation, although significantly (about three times) less.

Beats Studio Wireless Headphones
The device has a microUSB connector located on the right earbud to charge the built-in battery. Insert one end of the microUSB to USB-A cable into it and connect the other end to the AC adapter (included in the package) or to the USB-A port of your computer/laptop. If necessary, any other adapter with an output voltage of 5 V and an appropriate outlet can be used as a power adapter.

Fully charging the battery takes about two hours. The process can be monitored using a five-digit LED indicator located next to the socket:

  • flashing light - recharging;
  • All five white LEDs light up indicating charging is complete.

The continuous operation time with a fully charged battery is 12 and 20 hours in wireless and wired modes, respectively.

Features of charging headphones i9s, i7 and i11

Modifications of TWS headphones i7, i9 and i11 are copies of AirPods from China, which are infected in the same way as the original. But in particular, the TWS i7 provides the ability to charge the earbuds separately via a second cable that comes in the box (you may want to watch the video).

Also, some replica Airpods from Aliexpress load differently than the prototype. There is a button on the bodies of these headphones. And in order for the headphones to start charging, the user must insert them into the case and then press this button. If you do not do this, the headset will not charge, even if it is in this case.

What is charging possible from?

To charge any HeadSet or docking station, you should use the cable that comes with the kit or is specified by the manufacturer in the accompanying instructions.

The accompanying documentation indicates what can be used to charge the wireless gadget (computer, laptop, portable Power Bank or AC adapter).

Charging cable and connector

The cable that comes with the kit has connectors that are adapted by the manufacturer for manufactured wireless headphones and the power sources specified in the instructions for charging them.

Third-party cables may break the input jack on the headphones or charging case.

Headphones and cases from third-party companies may have different connectors as input ports:

  • Micro USB (USB port).
  • Lightning.

Wireless headphone charging cable

If the wire cross-section is smaller than that calculated by the manufacturer, then due to the increase in resistance, the charging current will decrease, which means the time it takes for the batteries to gain capacity will increase.

Can wireless headphones be charged using a phone charger?

The output voltage from the phone charger may differ from the voltage required to charge the batteries of the wireless HeadSet or charging box.

The phone itself will cope with this problem due to the input stabilization unit, but the gadgets will not charge correctly, which will reduce their service life.

You can use a phone charger or cables from other devices if they are from the same manufacturer as the headphones.

Apple AirPods

The Air Pods Bluetooth headset is charged via a storage case. The case has its own battery, which can be charged from the mains in any suitable way. Its capacity is enough for 4-5 full refills of the gadget. As you work, when the battery level reaches a minimum, the device’s speakers will begin to emit a single audio signal, and not long before turning off - a similar double sound.

To charge AirPods, you need to insert the headset into the case according to the instructions. The contacts of the headphones and the case will connect and charging will begin. If the charger case has a smart application, it can be connected to a smartphone, tablet or laptop, and thus find out the exact value of the battery capacity in %. The level can also be viewed by the color of the indication:

  • Yellow – needs to be charged.
  • Green – battery is charged.

When the case is empty, the display shows the capacity level of its own battery. If its color is yellow, it needs recharging. As a rule, it is carried out using a power cable from the network through a charger, or a USB port of a computer or laptop, as well as through a universal Qi device.

Charging time

The period during which the contactless headset is charged is indicated in the manufacturer's instructions included with each model.

How long does it take to charge wireless headphones?

The battery capacity of Bluetooth headphones determines how long it takes to fully charge the gadget. For different models this period ranges from 1 to 4 hours.

The maximum speed of capacity accumulation is ensured when the headset is connected to the network using original components.

When charging from a laptop or personal computer, the process is slower.

The latest models are equipped with fast charging: if you keep the capacity accumulation for about 5-15 minutes, this will ensure the operation of the gadget for a period of 1 to 3 hours.

In order for the battery of the purchased wireless headphones to function successfully, it is necessary to charge them to 100% three times after being completely discharged.

How to track charging time?

You can find out which signals are used to determine the battery charge level of a contactless headset by reading the information on the packaging or on the official website.

The LED indicator sensors clearly monitor the completion of the process: their color changes.

The charging time is sometimes specified in the instructions that came with the wireless headset.

In addition, you can install a special application for your smartphone, with which you can easily track the battery charge level.

How can you tell if your headphones are charged?

The fact that the charging process is complete is indicated by a change in the glow of the indicator sensors.

Most models, when the charge level is normal, they glow white or green, and if the headset is half charged, they glow yellow.

At low levels, when the headphones are discharged, the color turns red. However, other options are also possible.

There are models with a continuous indicator light at 100% charge. There are also those in which the sensor blinks or turns off.

Checking the remaining battery charge

To check the battery charge level of a wireless headset on Android you need to:

  • connect it to your phone;
  • In the upper right corner of the screen, next to the Bluetooth icon, the gadget’s battery charge will be displayed.

If there is no data on the screen, you need to go to the list of wireless Bluetooth devices and look at the battery charge level next to the connected headphones icon.

To check the remaining charge of the headset on your iPhone, you need to open the case next to the phone: the remaining charge of the case and headphones will be shown in the window.

Another way to check: go to the “Batteries” menu and look there.

There is also a special application for checking the charge level, which is installed when it is otherwise impossible to track the data.

Best wireless charging holder: Xiaomi Wireless Car Charger 20W

The optimal solution for all motorists

Pros: Xiaomi's smart car holder with wireless charging is equipped with infrared sensors, thanks to which the device detects a nearby phone and automatically expands the clamps to securely hold the smartphone. The maximum grip width is 81.5 mm, so the car accessory can be used with all models of modern phones, including gadgets from Samsung, Apple and Huawei.

A reliable triangular design ensures a clear fixation of the smartphone even on the most rough roads, and you can remove it from the mount with one hand by pressing a special button on the case. Xiaomi wireless charging power is enough to cope with silicone and plastic cases up to 4 mm thick. Xiaomi Car Charger is the optimal device for long trips and use in a multimillion-dollar metropolis: you can use the navigator without worrying that it will drain your phone’s battery.

Chinese developers have thought out the ergonomics to the smallest detail - the black frosted glass of the front surface creates a strict and laconic appearance that goes well with the premium interiors of new foreign cars. The mounts are equipped with rubber gaskets to prevent scratching the smartphone, and supercapacitors ensure that the electric drives of the clamp operate even when the car engine is turned off.

The kit includes two different mounts for the user: the first allows you to install the device on a ventilation grill, and the second (with an adhesive base) - on any convenient surface. Separately, it is worth mentioning the well-thought-out security system of the holder with Xiaomi wireless charging, which will protect the smartphone from overheating, uneven voltage and short circuits. More than 95% of buyers on the Yandex.Market site recommended the device for purchase to other users.

Cons: it is better not to install the device on the deflector in the cabin - it can be damaged during bumps.

How to charge?

Let's look at charging using JBL wireless headphones as an example. Among the wireless headsets, there are both regular models and those that are equipped with a docking station.

Since contactless gadgets need constant recharging, they come with a charging cable.

JBL connects via Bluetooth to a smartphone, and when fully charged can work for 4 hours. If you use charging from the case, their operating time will increase to 24 hours.

Wire type for wireless headphones

To increase the battery capacity of a wireless headset of this brand, with or without a case, use a cable with a micro-USB connector for headphones (case) and USB-A, which is inserted into the port of a laptop, Power Bank, or a regular charger with a mains plug.

An orange cable with the company logo on the ends is included in the product package.

It is better to charge JBL headphones not from a wall outlet via an AC adapter, but from devices whose output voltage is maintained at an optimal level.

Where should I connect the cable?

To charge JBL wireless models that do not have a docking station:

  • a thin wire connector (micro-USB) is inserted into the socket located on the side panel of the device, while sliding the protective cap;
  • The USB-A cable connector is connected to the network via an adapter, after which the LED sensor lights up;
  • At the end of the process, the indicator light goes out.

To charge the docking station, you must:

  • find a socket with a plug on the side of the case;
  • pull the plug towards you and slide it;
  • insert the thin end of the cable (micro-USB) into the socket;
  • plug the USB-A connector into the laptop port or adapter;
  • if one of the 4 sensors lights up, it means the batteries have started charging;
  • By the end of the process, all indicators will be on, and upon completion they will go out.

How long does it take to charge

The time it takes to fully charge the battery of any device depends on:

  • models;
  • battery capacity;
  • type of power supply.

Popular earphone models with a case, such as AirPods, JBL or Earpods, require only 15 minutes to fully charge. This is enough for subsequent work for 3 hours listening to music or 2 hours of talk time. Moreover, the battery of the case is enough for 3-4 recharges.

In general, if the headphones and case are fully charged, then their energy will last for 24 hours, taking into account the recovery of the headset's energy inside the case.

From what sources can the headphones be charged?

If the Bluetooth headphones are discharged, it is recommended to charge them from devices that have the appropriate power and voltage.

It can be:

  • Personal Computer;
  • laptop;
  • car charger;
  • Power Bank.

You should not use a telephone charger for a wireless headset to avoid damaging the gadget. This may occur due to inappropriate output voltage.

To protect the earbuds from damage and not get distorted sound at the output, you need to charge them using only the cable that comes with the kit.

Are the headphones charged from the mains?

The network voltage constantly changes throughout the day (there are drops and surges); you should not charge a wireless gadget directly from the network adapter, as the headphones may be damaged as a result.

What should the charge level be?

The contactless headset must be charged to 100% level. If the process is interrupted, the headphones will begin to discharge quickly and, in addition, the sound quality will become worse.

What are the best accessories?

As we always do with this type of compilation, from the ITIGIC writing team we want to tell you what our preferences are. However, this is our personal choice based on needs that may or may not be the same as yours, so we encourage you to decide which product or products are best for you.

Problems

Problems with charging a contactless headset are indicated by the following:

  • no response to reboot or key presses;
  • The indicator light starts flashing when connected and soon goes off.

If the headset is not charging?

Reasons why the battery capacity may not increase, and ways to eliminate them:

  1. The micro-USB port is faulty. In this case, the socket must be replaced.
  2. Lack of contact due to rubber seal. This part needs to be removed.
  3. The wire is deformed or broken. Disconnect and reconnect the cable.
  4. The computer from which the headset is charging could be in sleep mode.

If there is no charging, resetting the settings may help:

  • hold down the Volume and Power keys;
  • When the LED sensor flashes, release the buttons;
  • Reconnect the headset with your smartphone.

The reason why charging is not carried out may be a malfunction of the battery or controller. To replace them, you need to contact a service center.

The Xiaomi Mi wireless charging case is made of polycarbonate and ABS plastic, the vertical stand has a pleasant texture and is scratch-resistant. Four silicone feet will clearly fix the gadget on a slippery surface. The accessory is compatible with all Qi standard devices and, according to the manufacturer, has a charging power of up to 55 W, which is enough to power the phone 100% in less than 35 minutes (true for Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra).

Such power required the introduction of 6 degrees of protection, including a security system against static electricity, overvoltage, overcurrent and foreign objects. The device is connected to the network via a USB Type-C cable, which is included in the kit.

Cons: none identified

How to charge correctly?

General rules for charging a contactless headset:

  1. The supplied wire is inserted into the headphone jack using the appropriate connector.
  2. The USB plug is connected to a laptop, PC or other device used for charging. The LED indicator lights up or changes color.
  3. After the time specified in the instructions has elapsed (maximum 4 hours), the sensor will either go out, change color, or stop flashing.
  4. This means that the headphones, for example, from Aliexpress, are fully charged.

Check the charge level by connecting the gadget to the phone.

When charging wireless headsets of different models, you should take into account their features.

For JBL

The cable included with the JBL wireless headset.

When fully charged, the color of the indicator sensor will change to white or blue.

To charge the headphones from the docking station, they are placed in the box sockets - right and left, respectively.

When the contacts of the case and headphones are connected, charging occurs automatically: this is indicated by the 4 LED indicators lighting up.

If the docking station is charging, the charge level is determined by the number of LEDs that are lit.

When fully charged, all 4 sensors light up simultaneously for a short time and then go out.

JBL charges from 2 to 4 hours. 15 minutes. short-term charging provides 1 to 2 hours of HeadSet operation.

Before charging the JBL through the case, make sure that the magnetic elements of the docking station are in close contact with the contacts of the plugs, which can be disturbed by particles of dust or dirt.

Apple

Apple AirPods wireless headphones charge from the docking station.

Place it in the case, and the indicator sensors begin to light up, indicating that the capacity has begun to fill.

You can determine whether the headphones are installed correctly by checking whether they are disconnected from the smartphone.

The case is charged using a Lightning/USB cable:

  • the wire is connected to the Lightning port on the case;
  • the other end is inserted into the USB connector of a personal computer, laptop, or into the network via a charger for an iPad or iPhone;
  • the orange glow of the sensor indicates that the case or headphones, if they are in it, are not fully charged;
  • The green color of the indicator indicates full charge.

For AirPods Pro and AirPods 2022, wireless charging of the case is also possible:

  • the case is placed on a platform that is connected to the network;
  • The glow of the indicator sensor confirms the process.

The docking station can be charged without a headset.

How to understand that wireless headphones are charged

How to understand that AirDots are already charged

Redmi created his own branded headphones and gave them a name - AirDots

. They have their own unique case in which the music device is stored.

The Case of AirDots
Like wireless headphones, it has a small indicator that tells us if the devices are charging now. Or are already sufficiently charged. And they can be used. It is important to understand that in the case of Redmi AirDots, they can be charged even without a wire. It has small contacts that are located on the “saddles”.

AirDots headphones in a case

Unfortunately, the Redmi manufacturers didn't bother to include the cable needed to charge the case in the box. But this won't be a big problem since it comes with a micro USB port. And even if your home does not have devices with such a power source, you can buy it in a store or market. It is not expensive. To charge the case, you need to connect it with a cable to one of the power sources. This could be a computer, a smartphone charger, or a power station.

Best USB Wireless Charger: Samsung EP-N3300

Compact accessory with magnetic stand

Pros: the magnetic stand allows you to use Samsung wireless charging in several positions: horizontally on a table or on a stand at a convenient angle. By placing your phone at an angle, you can watch movies and favorite TV shows. There are two magnetic induction coils inside the case, so the orientation of the phone for placing it on wireless charging is not important.

The maximum power of the accessory is 9 W. For devices that support Qi technology, Samsung's maximum charging power will be 7.5 W. The kit includes a one-meter cable, a USB-C connector and a Samsung adapter with AFC (Adaptive Fast Charging). The status and process of energy supply is indicated by a color indicator.

Wireless charging is Qi certified. This means that it has four protection systems against overheating, short circuit and voltage drop. In addition to the phone, the EP-N3300 is suitable for charging wireless headphones - just place them in the appropriate case on the surface of the deck.
