10/23/2019 09:00 An audiophile is a person who loves listening to music in the highest quality and is willing to pay for equipment that allows this to happen. The hobby is not cheap, but novice audiophiles can get by with quite modest sums.
For example, for quite decent headphones and an amplifier for them (you can’t do without an amplifier!) you can pay $200-$400, after which you can well consider yourself an amateur audiophile. On the other hand, those who can afford it spend five and even six figures on top-of-the-line headphones and audio systems.
It is worth noting that, from an audiophile's point of view, the best sound is produced by those headphones that reproduce the music most accurately - the way the producer heard it. Nobody forbids lovers of deep bass to be audiophiles, but it is worth keeping this in mind.
What are headphones for an audiophile? Firstly, these are speakers and acoustics of the highest quality. Secondly, these are strong, durable and pleasant to the touch materials. Third, it is (usually) a strong, timeless design.
The best way to choose headphones is to test several models in person under the same conditions. But our selection includes only the best of the best, so if you are too lazy to go to the store in person, you can trust her.
Sennheiser HD 800S
acoustics: open | frequencies: 4-51000 Hz | impedance: 300 ohms | weight: 330 g | cable: 3 m
One of the most expensive and most advanced headphones on the market. They were included in the selection due to their comfort, durability and incredibly accurate reproduction of any sounds. Even after several hours of listening to music, you will not feel tired, and with proper care, this model will serve you for the rest of your life.
If you want to instantly become a "serious" audiophile, then purchasing the HD 800S will make you just that. Audio industry professionals compare all other similar headphones with them.
The sound of the HD 800S is stunningly balanced: pronounced bass, fantastic mids and crystal clear highs come together to create an unforgettable picture in your head. They can handle any genre!
Naturally, some may not like the bulkiness of this pair. In addition, you won’t be able to enjoy music in noisy rooms due to the open acoustic design.

AKG K 240 Studio
The rating opens with a semi-open type model for monitoring vocals, broadcasting, DJ, home recording, mixing, audio engineering and mastering with an extended frequency response and patented drivers. Price - 6500 rubles.
Pros:
- The main materials are leather and plastic.
- Self-adjusting metal headband and fit.
- Detachable cable, like Shure SRH840.
- Quick replacement of AKG branded cable thanks to the mini XLR connector. Adapter with thread to prevent self-unscrewing.
- The cable connection is one-sided, as in the Sennheiser HD 280 Pro.
- Detailed sound thanks to the professional patented Varimotion driver.
- Crystal clear highs, “beautiful” mids, tight bass.
- Expanded frequency response.
- Converters XXL.
- Universal due to the ¼” TRS adapter.
Minuses:
- There is bass, but it is not clearly discernible; they are not very suitable for dance music.
- Average sound insulation.
Will appeal to music lovers without pronounced dynamics and gamers. A good model for music professionals, for use in multimedia purposes. During recording, according to reviews, the headphones reproduce guitar and female vocals best. The highs and mids produce well, and in terms of bass they sound the same as the Sony MDR-7506.

Sennheiser HD 600
acoustics: open | frequencies: 12-39000 Hz | impedance: 300 ohms | weight: 260 g | cable: 3 m
Another Sennheiser model, this time for those who want to find something with a more attractive price-performance ratio, but still value balanced sound and comfort. Velor ear pads, not too much weight and thoughtful design allow you to listen to music without any problems for several hours.
In comparison with the HD 800S, they, of course, lose, but with proper care they will still serve you faithfully for many years - the materials here are cheaper, but still strong and durable.
The HD 600's sound is still stunning - the lows are consistent and punchy, while the mids and highs are superbly balanced and have minimal distortion at any volume. Perfect for jazz, rock, electronics, and classical music.
It is worth noting that this model also has an open acoustic design, so you should buy them only for listening to music at home or in the studio.
Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro
acoustics: closed | frequencies: 5-35000 Hz | impedance: 80 ohms | weight: 270 g | cable: 3 m
This is one of the inexpensive audiophile models: just over $200 is a pittance for this hobby. But that doesn't mean the DT 770 Pros are bad: they sound good and have a durable metal frame design that will keep them in "new" condition for years. In addition, they can be used in the office without any problems - these are closed headphones.
The ear pads here are also made of velor - your ears will not feel discomfort even after several hours of use. However, at first it may seem that the DT 770 Pro fits too tightly to them - at first you will have to be patient, and then they will loosen their grip a little.
The sound of these headphones cannot be called perfectly balanced - thanks to the protruding bass and closed acoustics, they are best suited for popular music. The DT 770 Pro is very popular among DJs and radio presenters. If you want to work with music in the studio, it's better to choose something else.

Audio-Technica ATH-M50x
acoustics: closed | frequencies: 15-28000 Hz | impedance: 38 ohms | weight: 285 g | cable: 3 m
ATH-M50x is a famous mid-budget model that is very popular among both ordinary music lovers and recording studio workers. They also feature a very durable design, but at the same time, for relatively little money, they also offer neat, balanced sound that can compete with the sound of much more expensive headphones.
Overall, if you want to become an audiophile, but don't want to spend too much money on it, then this Audio-Technica model is just about the perfect choice.
Sennheiser HD 25
acoustics: closed | frequencies: 16-22000 Hz | impedance: 70 ohms | weight: 140 g | cable: 1.5 m
These headphones are especially popular among DJs and those lovers of quality music who listen to it on the go. Accurate, balanced sound, low weight and very compact design are the main advantages of the HD 25.
The HD 25's body is made of plastic - it's best to handle them carefully, but they should survive a few drops without any problems. It is worth noting the excellent sound insulation - on a noisy street nothing will disturb you when listening to music.
The sound is well balanced: the bass is pronounced, but not too strong, the mids are neutral, and the highs are full of detail and without distortion. Again, suitable for any genre of music.
However, there are also disadvantages here. Firstly, the HD 25 doesn't feel "expensive" in the hands and has a boring design. Secondly, their cable is not too long and can be inconvenient in some cases. In any case, this is one of the best models in this form factor.
Review of the best and optimal DJ headphones. Category guide.
We will touch on the technical characteristics later, first you need to answer 5 main questions:
1. How clearly do the headphones play at high volumes?
As a rule, the price of headphones increases depending on their ability to clearly and evenly reproduce all frequencies at high volumes. High-quality speakers and ear cup housings are more expensive and produce balanced and dynamic sound not only at low and medium volumes, but also at extremely high volumes. The level of this limit is very important and it is good when the headphones have a certain “reserve” in volume. If you “pile” more than the selected model can withstand, then the speakers are overloaded and the sound is distorted. A good pressure margin is 120 dB close to the pain threshold, which will safely overlap or be competitive with the level of external sound in a club or rave (110 dB - 130 dB). Unfortunately, the maximum sound pressure level SPL (Sound Pressure Level) is not always indicated in the technical specifications, and if it is stated, it is not always honest. Therefore, test it, rely on your hearing, or our guide. 2. How well do the ear pads (ear pads) fit your ears and isolate you from external noise?
Obviously, if the ear pads are not sealed against the ears, then the sound from the outside will mix with the sound of the headphones and interfere. In such cases, you can make the headphones louder, but you will lose intelligibility and harm the health of your ears. The reason for the “holes” and “cracks” is, on the one hand, the design of the headphones (the rotating mechanisms of the cup, the softness and thickness of the ear pads), and on the other, the shape of your head. This is a very personal aspect when choosing headphones. It happens that DJs choose unpopular models, but they fit perfectly on their heads and fit well to their ears. As for the material of the ear pads, ear pads made of leather and leatherette provide greater tightness; all models of DJ headphones are originally equipped with them. The optional velor ear pads, while comfortable, allow sound waves to “leak through” due to their porous surface and are suitable for studio or home listening. Pay attention to how tightly one ear fits when the second one is retracted to the back of the head, try different fit options. Hence the next question:
3. Do you feel comfortable with the headphones on both ears and in other fits?
No matter how many times you take your headphones on and off during a set, or how you like to keep them on your head, you shouldn't have to think about them. Complete comfort and no distraction from the mix. Important points are the compression of the ears, the shape and weight of the headphones. The compression of the ears should be optimal so that the head does not end up “in a vice”, but at the same time the headphones do not fly to the floor. The shape is also an individual point; most likely, many top models will best suit your head, as they have well-designed rotating cup mechanisms. Weight constantly tends to a minimum - bulky models are less and less in demand. Some people like the fact that wraparound headphones with large ear cups create a more isolated listening atmosphere and a more spacious sound, but they tend to be heavy. In general, the design is lightened to the limit, but what about strength and flexibility?
4. How reliable and durable is their design?
In recent years, new lightweight plastics have been actively introduced into the production of headbands, which bend into three arcs, and they return to normal as new. Metal headband bars are also common, they are difficult to break, but they weigh a little more. The reliability of the remaining parts of the headphones depends on the quality of production; even the seemingly thin plastic of the rotating mechanisms of the cup can withstand heavy loads if the company has taken care of it. Each brand announces its model as reliable or even super reliable, but in reality only real examples of use matter. Like “I’ve been cracking nuts with them for six months and they’re like new” or “I bought them in a store and after the receipt was knocked out, the wires fell off.” It will be cool if your comments on this matter appear in the guide.
5. What is their design and how do you look in them?
You can't help but look in the mirror or at least imagine yourself wearing the headphones you've chosen. This is your main DJ attribute, let it complement your image. No more demagoguery.
And the most uninteresting thing about DJ headphones is the technical characteristics.
Frequency range.
A person hears only from 20 to 20,000 Hz, and then at average volume, and then before the age of 20. By age 50, the perceived range narrows to an average of 40–12,000 Hz. When there is a lot of noise in the club and high volume headphones, your analyzing range of the auditory system is narrowed even further due to the large amount of information and interference. We can say with confidence that all modern DJ headphones reproduce frequencies from at least 40 to 16,000 Hz. Ok, that's fine with us, regardless of what exactly is written on the packaging. It simply doesn’t make sense to look at this information when choosing, especially since the declared frequency range of headphones is often embellished by the manufacturer, and it does not indicate under what conditions the measurements were taken. This parameter in no way shows the “purity” of the sound, as they write on some resources. At this stage of industry development, methods and criteria for computer assessment of sound “purity” are just being developed, and so far it is the subjective expert assessment of living people that prevails. Why, in fact, do debates constantly flare up on all Hi-Fi forums about the quality of this or that piece of hardware, and many audiophiles fiercely prove their “expertise” of hearing and the authenticity of sensations. So be your own expert and define cleanliness.
The amplitude-frequency response graph can tell us about a good balance of frequencies.
, and its “evenness” is needed only in studio models for accurate monitoring and is absolutely not needed in DJ models, because at high volumes our hearing needs comfort and graph dips in the 2-5 kHz region - the most sensitive and painful frequencies for hearing. The graph is rarely drawn on the box or in the manual, since for an inexperienced user this curve looks too crooked.
Harmonic distortion factor
- this is to make it easier for everyone to understand by what percentage the output sound from the earphone differs from the original signal that was fed to it. That is, how much the headphones distorted the signal. Moreover, it is not indicated anywhere in which frequency range it was distorted. And in a noisy DJ, changes of 1 or even 3% will be absolutely unnoticeable to us. This parameter is also in the oven.
The only parameter that is always indicated on the box of DJ headphones and really matters is resistance (or impedance)
.
The lower the resistance, the easier it is to “drive” the headphones to the sound source - player, sound card, mixing console, etc.; less voltage is required from them. There is a second feature: when connecting low-impedance headphones, the source will provide a higher current strength, and along with it, signal distortion will increase. Therefore: At low impedance:
a weak source is sufficient to achieve maximum volume;
more distortion. For high resistance:
a more powerful source is required;
less distortion. As you can see, in studio or hi-fi models, in pursuit of a clean signal, they make high resistance. These headphones require the use of an additional preamplifier. The average value for all DJ
headphones is 30-90 Ohms, no additional amplifier is needed here, they can all sound loud not only from a mixer, but also from a laptop or smartphone. Below 30 ohms there may be audible distortion at high volumes, above 90 ohms you will not be able to listen loudly to headphones on small electronics.
Max SPL (Sound Pressure Level)
— the level of maximum sound pressure at which the sound remains without distortion. This is a very important parameter for DJ headphones, we wrote about it at the beginning of the guide, but there are practically no manufacturers who write it on the box.
Sensitivity
shows how loud the headphones are. But to evaluate this volume, it is necessary to compare several parameters that can no longer be found on the box. The sensitivity value is indicated based on marketing plans and does not provide valuable information. It must be said that sensitivity, in particular, depends on resistance, and in very rough terms we can remember that the lower the resistance, the higher the sensitivity (loudness) and vice versa. It makes no sense to look at this parameter on the box.
Maximum input power
- this is a parameter that indicates at what power supply the headphones can fail. Moreover, this parameter is presented on the box as something cool, when in fact it is a technical point that makes no sense. You can burn out DJ headphones by connecting them to powerful external amplifiers.
As a result, almost all characteristics are absolutely useless information. Just look at the impedance of the headphones, make sure that it is within the normal range, and move on to a subjective personal assessment of sound, design and comfort. Most of the characteristics become important only when choosing studio or hi-fi headphones, but we will describe this in another guide.
So, a guide to DJ headphones. First are the most worthy ones, below are more affordable, but also worthwhile. Do not cling strictly to positions in the ranking; for some, the arrangement may be slightly different. But the list itself is of great importance and will need to be updated periodically.
Sennheiser HD 25 headphone series
.
The headphones themselves and the headband are the same, the models differ only in the wires and equipment:
Sennheiser HD 25: straight wire 1.5 m, angled jack. Sennheiser HD 25 Plus: additional twisted cable, 3m stretched, 1m compressed, straight jack, additional velor ear pads, pouch.
The resistance of both models is 70 Ohms, i.e. Maximum volume output cannot be achieved from them when used with portable players, but when connected to professional amplification equipment (mixers, amplifiers, etc.) they sound loud and have an advantage in purity. In terms of intelligibility and depth of sound, these are among the leaders.
Advantages of Sennheiser HD 25, based on our criteria:
1. Clear deep sound and high maximum pressure threshold. 2. Due to the movable design, the cups easily find their place on the ears and fit tightly. The soft leatherette ear pads are very comfortable. 3. The weight is small, only 140 g, and it fits easily on the head even in a horizontal position. 4. The plastic of the headband and other parts is very resistant to shock and bending. Not as much as the next models on this list, but it's enough. All components and parts can be purchased separately and replaced. 5. The design is stylish, minimalistic, the size is small and the headphones look very neat on the head.
The only downside that can be noted is that the 2-5 kHz region is not sufficiently cut out - at high volumes when DJing, your hearing will get tired faster, but this is not noticeable. But at medium volumes when listening to music or studio work, a more natural balance of frequencies is maintained.
All the same advantages can be safely written for the following two leaders:
AIAIAI TMA-2 Headphone Series for DJing
AIAIAI TMA-2 DJ Preset is a standard assembly consisting of components ideally selected for DJing. Nylon headband, leather over-ear ear pads, 1.5-3.2 m twisted cable, large jack adapter Aiaiai TMA-2 MFG2 Preset - DJ - in addition to the previous set, a short 1.2-meter straight thermoplastic cable with a USB-C connection has been added Aiaiai TMA-2 MFG7 Preset - Wireless DJ - this model has a Bluetooth adapter built into the arm, which allows you to completely get rid of wires.
As you can see, the models differ from each other only in additional bells and whistles. This series has a comfortable balance between frequencies, which prevents the hearing from quickly getting tired. In particular, the 2-5 kHz region is sufficiently reduced and does not “harm” the ear at high volumes. I wonder if many people notice this? Let's discuss in the comments. Light weight (about 190g) is an excellent indicator for comfort. The plastic is rotatable as you like, very resistant to deformation. For many, the design is the most successful, the solid temple, movable cups, and the matte plastic outer material are very pleasant. Resistance 32 Ohm.
With the AIAIAI TMA-2 series, you can assemble the right professional headphones from a set of components. This is the world's first “modular” series - a very cool and flexible approach to the consumer. There are several characteristic speakers, ear pads with different sound insulation and shape, temples for different heads and different conditions of use, many different wires (twisted, straight, different in length, with and without a microphone).
Beyerdynamic DT 1350
Strangely, Beyerdynamic does not advertise the DT 1350 model in any way. Overlooked headphones of the highest quality, with Tesla technology providing excellent frequency balance, detail and depth of sound, super high sound pressure SPL 129 dB. The body of the cups and the arms are made of flexible metal. Compact design, weight only 174 g. Leather insulating ear pads. This is the maximum of high performance. The design has retro echoes and is designed in a minimalist style. A 1.5 meter straight wire is more than enough for professional work, but may still not be enough for some situations. If you don't need the length of the twisted wire, take a closer look at the Beyerdynamic DT 1350, this is a real standard of quality. Resistance 80 Ohm. Ask for a discount in our store, this is an expensive model and we do our best to accommodate customers.
Urbanears Zinken/Krutis
Urbanears Krutis Urbanears ZINKEN Black
These models impress with their low price, excellent frequency balance at maximum volume and a unique cable, for which they are ranked high in our rating. And, indeed, with similar external and design characteristics to the same AIAIAI TMA-2 DJ, they are quite a bit inferior in terms of maximum sound pressure and sound intelligibility, while the Urbanears price is 2 times lower. A distinctive feature of this company’s headphones is a two-way cable. In one ear there is a JACK 6.3 connector, in the other there is a miniJACK 3.5, and the cable has the same different plugs at the ends. Depending on what connector your audio source has, you flip the cable, changing the input ear and dispensing with additional adapters. But that’s not all, the second ear connector remains free and can be used as an output for linking second headphones - this is a very cool option for everyday use if you suddenly want to listen to one source together. A lot of advantages and one question: is there enough pressure for the noisy conditions of the club? Yes, damn it, there are plenty, and they are used by very serious DJs, just go to Instagram @urbanears. Therefore, for those who have a limited budget, we recommend paying attention to Urbanears headphones. Let's add that the internal headband and mounts with cups are made of metal, this is a guarantee of durability, and a resistance of 85 Ohms is not enough only for weak players.
Pioneer HDJ-S7
Pioneer HDJ-S7-K Pioneer HDJ-S7-W
The pressure is at an excellent level, the sound is slightly inferior to the leaders, Pioneer has reduced the harsh “metallic” high frequencies at high volumes, this is a big plus. The dimensions are similar to the HD 25, and the weight is 215 g. The design is excellent, with general minimalism and a high-quality rubberized finish, there are light silver decoration elements. Resistance is 48 Ohms, the kit includes a main twisted wire of 1.2-3 m and a straight wire of 1.6 m, as well as a case for transportation and storage, an adapter for connecting to a connector with a diameter of 6.3 mm.
Pioneer HDJ-X series
Pioneer HDJ-X5-K Pioneer HDJ-X5-S Pioneer HDJ-X7-S Pioneer HDJ-X7-K Pioneer HDJ-X10-K Pioneer HDJ-X10-S Sound
clarity and pressure at a high level. Headphones are “wraparound” with large cups; some people find this shape convenient. The design of the cups is very ergonomic and fits almost any skull, hence comfort and sound insulation. The weight for their size is not the lowest (269 - 328 g), but your head can get tired only during long sets; you can listen to them at home for 2-3 hours. The design is strict and stylish, 2 colors to choose from. Includes main twisted wire and case. Resistance 36 Ohm.
V-Moda Crossfade M-100
V-Moda Crossfade M-100 Matte Black V-Moda Crossfade M-100 Shadow V-Moda Crossfade M-100 White Silver In the Italian headphones Crossfade M-100 from V-moda, the design, build quality, attention to detail and equipment immediately catch your eye . Everything, from the box, the case to the small details of the headphones, is made with the utmost care. The metal parts of the temple guarantee strength and durability. Two longer and shorter wires, with a rag sheath and high-end connectors, one of the wires has control buttons for mobile devices. Headband and ear pads made of genuine leather. A very meticulous approach to production - this seems strange in our time, Italian perfectionism. The sound in this model is also not far behind. Very clean, legible, transparent across the entire spectrum at medium and low volumes, which is good for listening at home and with a player. If we take them to maximum volume for noisy rooms and DJing, then they can cope here too, not the same result as the leaders, but there is enough pressure. Overall, if you like the design, value build quality and construction, and don't need an ultra-tight earpiece for monitoring in noisy environments, then there are no better headphones for you. The weight is not the lowest due to the durable metal in the nodes - 280 g. Resistance 32 Ohms.
Technics RP-DJ1210 / Technics RP-DJ1200
Technics RP-DJ1210 Technics RP-DJ1200
Legendary RP-DJ. Pressure and frequency balance are at a very high level, the main indicator has been achieved. The clarity of the sound is slightly inferior, but these headphones are included in this rating partly because of their relative affordability; they are not that expensive. Weight 270g due to the headband, there is a metal plate for strength and a bunch of plastic on the outside. If they were made now, they would probably make the headband thinner. The design is more than reliable; if you don’t sit on them, they live for a very long time. The design is still successful to this day. Resistance 32 Ohm.
In addition to differences in color, there are differences in the wire: Technics RP-DJ1210 - 3m twisted wire, Technics RP-DJ1200 - 3m straight wire. All models come with a thick leather bag.
Sennheiser HD 25 Light
Sennheiser HD 25 Light
Version of the HD 25 with less powerful speakers and a simplified headband. Two wires running separately to each earphone may create inconvenience, but the sound quality, lightness (120 g) and convenience make them popular. Another disadvantage is the long (3 meters) straight wire, which some users have to twist or shorten so that it does not lie on the floor. It would be better to make it 1.5 meters and add an extension cord to the kit. The design is great. Resistance is 65 Ohms, they won’t play loudly on miniature players.
Pioneer HDJ-700 Series
Pioneer HDJ-700-K Pioneer HDJ-700-N Pioneer HDJ-700-R Pioneer HDJ-700-W The
pressure and sound quality are enough for full-fledged professional work. Most likely, Pioneer tried to solve this problem primarily when creating this series. An excellent budget option. The weight is quite low - 195 g. But you need to be careful with them, the design is very flimsy, the arms break. Don't gracefully move the headphones far to the sides before putting them on your head. The main wire is twisted, an additional short one is for portable devices. Resistance 45 Ohm.
AKG K181 DJ
AKG K181
DJ headphones with wrap-around ear cups and good isolation. High pressure, clear sound, movable ear cups fit comfortably around the ears, but the ear pads are thin and will not fit all heads. The headband is reinforced with a steel plate, and all other parts are made of durable and beautiful plastic. Ears fold inward for easy transportation. May seem a little heavy, 280 g. Resistance 42 ohms.
NUMARK Red Wave
NUMARK Red Wave
A very budget option, which obviously affects the quality of both sound and design. The closed design provides acceptable sound insulation. Large, 50mm neodymium headphone drivers produce powerful sound output. Resistance 36 Ohm.
This concludes this guide. Of course, we have not listed all DJ headphones, but only those that deserve attention. The main thing when choosing, remember:

Bowers & Wilkins PX
acoustics: closed | frequencies: 10-20000 Hz | impedance: 20 ohms | weight: 335 g | cable: 1.2 m
Wireless: Bluetooth 4.1 (22 hour battery)
Here is one of the few wireless models that can be called “audiophile”. B&W PX combines the almost incongruous - balanced (as far as possible given the limitations of Bluetooth) sound and an effective adaptive active noise reduction system.
In addition, the PX looks very attractive and has a body made of aluminum and very durable plastic. You won't have to worry about durability, and the battery will last a full 22 hours without being too heavy. Charging is carried out via a modern USB-C port.
You can control music playback, connections and calls using three buttons. The sound has powerful bass, good mids and bright highs.
- TOP 5: High-quality headphone cables - the effect of the wire on the sound
Some people find the PX not very comfortable - stiff and heavy. It's best to try them out before you shell out almost $500. In addition, with the noise reduction system turned on, the sound quality still drops noticeably.
AKG K 181 DJ - voluminous and comfortable
The famous Austrian brand has been producing home and professional audio equipment for 70 years. The company's product range includes almost 2 thousand headphone options. The K81 model is aimed at a wide audience - not only DJs, but also amateur music lovers. The ear pads, trimmed with soft leatherette, are comfortable for long-term wearing and perfectly isolate external noise. The wire can be disconnected and replaced if damaged.
Advantages:
- Strength. High-quality materials and thoughtful design guarantee the safety of the device for 7-10 years.
- Headphones made of metal and hard plastic are of high build quality.
- Large hinged cups tightly cover the ears, and the headband can be adjusted to fit the shape of the head.
- There is a frequency switch that allows you to increase the intensity of low frequencies and set the mode to mono or stereo.
- The device provides a balanced, clear sound with emphatically powerful bass.
- Compatibility. Headphones work with various types of amplifiers, computers, stereo systems, iPods and players.
- Ergonomics. The headband fits tightly on the head without causing fatigue.
Flaws:
- Weak cable winding. The insulation becomes unusable within the first months of use, although the wire itself remains intact.
- Fragile leatherette. The inside of the ear pads wears out quickly.
- Fragile turning parts.

Sennheiser HD 820
acoustics: closed | frequencies: 6-48000 Hz | impedance: 300 ohms | weight: 360 g | cable: 3 m
Another incredibly expensive model for those who are not ready to give up on anything and have enough money for this. Sennheiser is a leading headphone manufacturer for a reason - the company produces models in a wide range of price segments, and almost all of them stand out from the competition.
The HD 820 sound is full, very detailed and powerful. Closed-back headphones often have problems with sound distortion, but not in this case - the engineers equipped the HD 820 with Gorilla Glass and absorption chambers that avoid it. The case is stylish, ultra-durable and unusually easy to use.
There are simply no downsides to this model. Unless, of course, you count the exorbitant price and bulky body, which is unlikely to be comfortable on the move. But thanks to the closed acoustic design, the HD 820 can be used in the office!
Sony WH-1000XM3
acoustics: closed | frequencies: 4-40000 Hz | impedance: 16 ohms | weight: 255 g | cable: 1.2 m
wireless: Bluetooth 4.2 (38 hour battery)
Another wireless model, Sony is famous for its Bluetooth headphones, which stand out from others for their unusually high sound quality and endurance. There is also an active noise reduction system.
The WH-1000XM3 have a natural, detailed and bright sound that is very difficult to find fault with, as well as an elegant and very comfortable design. Thanks to their light weight and low rigidity, you can wear them on your head all day long, and a battery life of as much as 38 hours will not become a sudden problem. The perfect companion for a long flight or a working day in the office chair!
The only significant drawback of these headphones is the touch controls, which will take some getting used to. It's not that it doesn't work as it should, but it can't be called intuitive.
Sony WF-1000XM3
plug-in | acoustics: closed | frequencies: 20-20000 Hz | weight: 77 g
Wireless: Bluetooth 5 (6 hour battery)
This may come as a surprise to some, but top-end headphones can easily compete with full-size headphones in terms of sound quality. Sony produces these too! The WF-1000XM3 have a special chip for flawless synchronization with each other - these are some of the best earbuds on the market, and their “musical” sound is noticeably cleaner and brighter than that of AirPods.
This model also features an excellent active noise reduction system and excellent batteries. In addition, the housing design keeps them firmly in your ears even during active workouts.
Among the disadvantages of the WF-1000XM3, it is worth highlighting the lack of volume control (it must be configured on a smartphone or other device to which the headphones are connected) and the lack of support for the aptX HD codec.
Shure SE425
plug-in, reinforcement | frequencies: 20-19000 Hz | impedance: 22 ohms | weight: 29.5 g | cable: 1.62 m
This model appeared on the market several years ago, but still remains one of the best in terms of sound. If you consider yourself a "serious" audiophile and want to purchase wired plugs, it will be difficult to find something better than the Shure SE425.
The sound of these headphones cannot be called anything other than excellently balanced (perhaps even too balanced - the bass may be enough for some). Every detail of your favorite recording will be easy to discern, and some you'll even discover for the first time!
Yes, wired earbuds don’t look modern at all in 2022, but remember that Bluetooth is still seriously inferior in quality to a wired connection. If you want the best quality headphones for sports or just exploring the great outdoors, the SE425 is a great choice, especially at this price.
AKG K 72
acoustics: closed | frequencies: 16-20000 Hz | impedance: 32 ohms | weight: 200 g | cable: 3 m
The most budget option for those who want to hear more or less high-quality sound in full-size headphones. You can even start with a model that costs around $65, and the K 72 has almost no worthy rivals in this price category.
This model not only features a durable body, comfortable ear pads and a long cable, but also a completely neutral sound with not too much protrusion of the bass. However, the mids may seem a little more insistent than necessary.
AKG K 72 is suitable for those music lovers who do not want to spend too much money on a purchase, as well as for those who need spare headphones. Even numerous Sennheisers with approximately the same price will not provide such sound.
Sennheiser HD 280 Pro
Specially created for radio DJs and professional use. It is best to listen to music in uncompressed formats on this model. The monitor immediately cuts you off from what is happening around you, immerses you in the melody, and gives detailed, stunning, realistic sound. Price - 7950 rubles.
Pros:
- Folding ear pads, like the Sony MDR-7506.
- Modular design with easily replaceable, removable components.
- Corrosion-resistant gold-plated headphone plug, just like the AKG K 240 Studio.
- Detachable oxygen-free copper cord.
- Excellent playback of uncompressed files.
- Low harmonic distortion - 0.1%. Clear, distortion-free sound.
- The AHF according to the data in the diagrams shows a smooth curve without dips at the bottom or top.
- Very light - 220g, lighter than AKG K 712 Pro (235g).
Minuses:
- Short cord - only 130 cm.
- There is no carrying/storage case like the Audio-Technica ATH-M50x.
The model is not intended for connection to smartphones and iPhones due to the high impedance of 64 Ohms; it will not reveal the sound spectrum, but when connected to the appropriate amplifiers it will produce stunning realistic “music” (according to reviews). For home listening without special equipment, you need low-impedance models, at least ones like the Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro 32 Ohm.

Defender FreeMotion B530
acoustics: closed | frequencies: 20-20000 Hz | impedance: 32 ohms | weight: 430 g
Wireless: Bluetooth 4.2 (8 hour battery)
Very cheap Bluetooth headphones for buyers on a budget. Good sound, convenient design, foldability and a fairly durable battery make the FreeMotion B530 a good choice in this price category.
Naturally, you shouldn’t expect a balanced sound from them - the bass is very prominent here and there are not enough high frequencies. But it is possible to receive calls from your phone and connect another headphones via the 3.5 mm audio output if you want to listen to music with a friend or girlfriend. There is even a noise reduction function.
It is worth noting that the case materials are very cheap - the build quality is good, but the strength and durability of the headphones is in question. Controlling the not-so-convenient buttons also raises some questions.
AKG K 81 DJ - rugged and compact
The version from the “senior” model range is designed for daily use for work or leisure. The headphones can be folded 6 different ways and packed in the included case. Plastic cups are complemented by thick eco-leather ear pads. The headphones provide rich sound in the mid and lower registers. High notes can be easily enhanced with equalizer settings.
Advantages:
- Excellent sound insulation. The device protects against external sounds at the level of high-quality in-ear headphones.
- The flexible plastic headband is reinforced with a metal strip.
- Comfort to use. The headband fits tightly on the head even with active movements; it is possible to rotate the cups and move one earphone if necessary to listen to the sound from the speakers.
- The 2.5 m long rubberized cord is convenient for use from stationary equipment. The kit includes a 10 mm adapter.
- The device is equipped with a proprietary folding mechanism.
- Bass depth, organic for dance tracks.
Flaws:
- Small headband size. For heads over size 58, the headphones may be tight.
- Weak wire. The cable is often damaged in the bend and plug area.
- Fragile skin. With active use, the covering of the ear pads begins to crack after 1-1.5 years.
Axelvox HD242
acoustics: semi-open | frequencies: 10-30000 Hz | impedance: 56 ohms | weight: 222 g | cable: 3 m
Some of the best cheap monitor headphones on the market that offer amazingly smooth, balanced sound. It is better to use them at home - the music will “leak” outside due to the semi-open acoustics.
Additional advantages include a detachable cable (two are included in the kit - with 3.5- and 6.3-mm connectors) and a nice design. The disadvantages are the not very comfortable design, which puts a lot of pressure on the ears, as well as the material of the ear pads, which will cause your ears to sweat seriously in the summer.
Modern headphones are varied and, according to their specific technical characteristics, can be used for specific tasks. For true music lovers and bass lovers, there are special headphones for rock music. What they should be and the top most popular models are presented later in the article.
Sennheiser HD8 DJ - loud and functional
The device from the legendary German company takes into account all the nuances of the work of a DJ or sound engineer. Ear cushions made of leatherette and soft velor provide comfortable work throughout the evening. The case is made from high-strength plastic reinforced with metal elements. Intense sound pressure helps you listen to tracks during stage work.
Advantages:
- Rich equipment. The headphones come with 2 wires, spare ear pads, a 6.3 mm adapter and a good-quality case.
- Cord device. The removable wire can be connected to any of the cups.
- The sound presentation is traditionally focused on the low and mid frequency range.
- The cable braid is reinforced with heat-resistant Kevlar thread.
- Closed cups create complete isolation from external noise.
- Thoughtful sound transmission. The range is designed to reproduce modern dance genres.
Flaws:
- Hard headband. When worn for a long time, the headband begins to compress the temples.
- Warm-up required. To get a balanced sound, the device must be warmed up for at least 70 hours.
- Imperfect sound. The device is not suitable for a number of musical styles - classical, jazz, soul, or for watching movies.

What real headphones for rock music should be like: basic selection criteria
Real headphones for listening to rock music must meet certain criteria, knowing which, you can select the necessary devices from models of any manufacturer.
Basic requirements that headphones for rock music must meet:
- High quality bass system. Only normal bass allows you to listen to both modern rock performers and representatives of this trend from the distant 70s.
- Wide mid range. A very important parameter, because the depth of frequencies makes the sound better and richer, especially when playing “heavy” music.
- Minimum acceptable level of high frequencies. Rock music is performed in a low key, which is why they prefer to saturate it with bass. High frequencies will make the sound shrill, which will only disrupt the sound background.
When choosing devices for listening to rock music, you should pay attention to world-famous manufacturers. This is due to the rapid filling of the market with low-quality counterfeits with a short service life. Also, any manufacturer provides a certain warranty period for their devices, which allows you to replace headphones (for example, if they break) completely free of charge.
Focus EDM Review: Basshead Headphones for Electronic Music
Today we will take a look at a new solution in the dynamic in-ear headphones market: the Focus EDM model. The company, as far as I know, is new. Positioning itself on the creation of studio in-ear monitors and improvement through feedback from musicians. Now they already have three models: EDM, Vocal and Rhythm. We will look at the first of them.

Characteristics
- Emitters: dynamic 10.2 mm
- Connector: 2Pin 0.78 mm.
- Frequency range: 5 Hz – 40 kHz
- Sensitivity: 105 dB/mW
- Impedance: 16 Ohm
- Cable resistance: 0.270/0.580 ohm
Packaging and equipment
The headphones arrived in a medium-sized cardboard box with a description of the main advantages of the model and a complete list of technical characteristics. The important thing to note is the 16 ohm impedance and sensitivity of 105 dB/mW, which indicates a fairly high sensitivity to all kinds of background noise. I checked, using them with a tube amplifier is difficult.
Inside we find the headphones themselves, a set of waste paper, a dense leatherette case that is pleasant to the touch, and two sets of silicone ear pads with the inscription, for some reason, Focus Vocal.
The cable looks just great: twisted, elastic, with a straight metal plug and 0.78 mm male connectors. The equipment showed the resistance of the common channel to be 0.270 ohms, and the left and right channels to be 0.580 ohms.
Design/Ergonomics
The cups themselves are entirely made of metal; they are distinguished from other models by the presence of sharp chopped edges integrated into the rounded design. That is, such elegant uncouthness.
On the inside there is the first compensation hole for a 10.2 mm dynamic driver and a sound guide, with a rim for holding ear pads and a protective metal mesh.
The faceplates here are stylized as wood with a gold-plated company logo. This all looks really interesting.
The fit is also beyond praise: comfortable, and the sound insulation is at an excellent level.
Measurements
According to measurements, we have a slightly longer pulse relative to the norm, acceptable discrepancies between the left and right channels and distortions, reaching 0.8% at the peak. Which is very good.
The phase behaves naturally, and the attenuation is 30 and 60 dB. correspond to somewhere between 76 and 96 ms. And without any disturbances.
The difference between the ear pads, as you can see, is absolutely insignificant.
In terms of frequency response, we have a rise in low frequencies by as much as 16 dB with a smooth approach to the middle, highlighting the area of intelligibility, simulating the auricle, as well as a peak at 8 kHz to enhance the overall sharpness of the sound. In total, the schedule was honestly brought to 20 kHz.
Measurements taken on an artificial ear according to IEC-60318-4 standard.
Sound
In the Focus EDM sound, the first thing you notice is the low frequencies. There really are a lot of them here and, based on the name EDM, I won’t even dispute this. For electronic music, as they say, there can never be too much bass. Although, on the other hand, both sets of supplied ear pads did not fit me personally, which is why the bass was noticeably cut off. So, if you have the same case, then just buy additional attachments from KbEar, for example, like mine with a yellow core. The character itself is very musical with a dense, natural structure. Which is why, of course, the separation suffers a little, but the sound does not have any clearly noticeable differences: the bass smoothly flows into the middle, which, using elements of psychoacoustics, emphasizes the vocals, and also increases the intelligibility and overall sharpness of the sound. The tall ones here don’t cut, don’t saw, and generally don’t attract attention to themselves. For which we thank them very much, as everything sounds comfortable, deep and very melodic.
Focus EDM is probably not particularly suitable for orchestral music or complex multi-instrumental jazz. However, this was immediately clear from the name. Of course, you can listen to everything here, but for an orchestra there is not enough separation and air between the instruments, and for any work with vocals there is too much bass. With sources that also emphasize this range, it turns out to be an overkill. So, in conjunction with Focus EDM, I personally do not recommend using the new Beam 3Pro DAC. Together they produce a downright booming sound. However, having switched to the stationary DAC SMSL DO200, listening was already very comfortable, and all the excessive booming went away. So be careful in this matter.
When it comes to soul, blues, old black jazz, metal or some kind of club electronics, the headphones open up to their full potential. For deadcore, in my opinion, legibility is enough. It’s not exactly clean, but it’s fatty, juicy and assertive. And the rhythm guitars are in their place, and the vocals stand out from the track correctly, and the dirt of the highs is not pushed in our face. I like the heavyweight in this configuration, because it reminds me of the very time when they copied it from audio cassettes. For those who love crystal purity and a clear separation, alas, the model cannot boast of such characteristics. It's a little dirty, a little foggy, a lot of bass, fat and drive. From here it should be obvious what the review’s heroes would be best suited to pairing with: take something as detailed, sharp and technical as possible. And the headphones have enough melody and volume for two, as well as depth.
Electronics, much like heavy metal, greatly depends on the specifics of the subgenre and how exactly you like to cook it all. Christian Loffler has a pleasant mass and unrealistically pumping bass. Yes, this is without a doubt a basshead model, for those who love low frequencies at the level of goosebumps. It creates the feeling of some kind of elite nightclub, because although everything vibrates in rhythm, there is no unnecessary ringing or resonant distortion. Everything is more or less clear, voluminous and extremely deep. Well, with a well-chosen combination, elements of technicality will also be added. The headphones turned out to be quite interesting and very effective for those who value meat, fat and drive. Regarding monitoring for musicians, as stated by the manufacturer himself, it is possible, but for these purposes it makes sense to choose something with better transient characteristics. Although here, for example, you can evaluate how the instrument fits into the track.

conclusions
As a result, the Focus EDM dynamic in-ear headphones have a very solid appearance, a comfortable fit and a pleasant, very bassy and at the same time melodic sound. With a slight haze, of course, and far from the most record-breaking separation, but everything is natural, rich and deep. Well, since our model was called EDM, it would be completely irrational to demand from them a level in some kind of academic or fast heavy music. Here we have the atmosphere of a club, both a night dance and a small jazz one: a little dirt, volume, comfort and richness of rhythmic parts. I'm really hooked on Loffler, although it's far from the most danceable electronica. Cool, what can I say.
The downside is that the supplied attachments didn’t work for me at all, fortunately I bought 4 additional pairs from KbEar a long time ago and the sensitivity is very high, which can cause background noise from the source to appear. And so, nice fun headphones for dance electronics.

Pros and cons of headphones for rock music
The main positive feature of such devices is the sound quality and its sufficient depth, which is why rock music lovers prefer such headphones. The combination of the correct level of mid frequencies, the virtual absence of high frequencies, as well as bass, allows you to transmit “heavy” music without errors, in detail and clearly.
Most models have high technical characteristics: sensitivity, resistance, power, etc. This allows you to use headphones not only for listening to rock music, but also other genres, for example, classics. Many users prefer audio lessons, which can also be listened to using headphones of this quality.
But there is one significant drawback: long-term sound of headphones for rock music harms human hearing, since their sound transmission is saturated with mid-frequencies and bass. Therefore, in order to reduce the harm from listening to rock music, you should take breaks to rest your auditory system.

Yes, the appearance of such a product is rather unremarkable and even small, but this does not interfere with its convenience.
The design is thought out to the smallest detail, there are no creaks, they slide apart easily. However, the external part is not the most important thing in this model, since most people only evaluate the sound, which here is not dry, but velvety. Everything is smooth, smooth and perfect. The bass range is a separate issue; there is no sound that is familiar to many, only naturalness.
