Opel Omega X20SE Reconstruction › Logbook › Installing subwoofers in the rear parcel shelf
The idea had been lurking for a long time and I already had practice, money appeared and I purchased an inexpensive set of acoustics.
Two Pioneer free air 12″ subwoofers and a Dragster amplifier, 16mm chipboard sheet. The Pioneer DEH-6300CD head was left over from the previous car. The plywood was cut in 3 layers, but the photo is part 2, then, due to the fact that the sub wouldn’t fit due to the glass, another layer of chipboard was made
The rear shelf was ruthlessly cut out, almost all of it, leaving the amplifier in the center and on the sides, in the photo, again, only the initial cutting, then more was bitten off))
Trying on, cutting, adjusting. It was secured with many self-tapping screws and covered with carpet on top. Special attention was paid to the seat belt; I didn’t want to remove it, but it was in the way, and after much thought, a square was cut out for it and the subwoofers were moved closer to the sides.
In the trunk, all the cracks and holes were sealed with sealant and vibro. The trunk will be completely soundproofed in the future, so strong styling is not imposed there. The amplifier sits comfortably on the central amplifier and is conveniently adjustable.
The power wires were stretched on the left side of the threshold, the acoustic wires on the right. I pulled two sets at once, because... in the future it is planned to install another amplifier at the rear and front.
At the same time I changed the front speakers, cut out the spacers and everything fits well)
Pitfalls that I encountered:
1. Don’t forget about the seat belt on the shelf, I first cut it out in the shelf, and then it got in the way of the subwoofer, so I had to redo it
2. The control wire did not immediately work for the amplifier, because... it was connected to the antenna (so that the date would be shown on the display), cut it off from the antenna - it worked.
3. Save power and acoustic wires, the car is long and may not be enough))
What has not yet been completed: 1. After installing the plastic covers, they resonate very strongly at some frequencies, we need to think about how best to secure them
2. Change the rear speakers in the doors
3. Install the amplifier on the speakers
4. Make noise in the trunk and in the rear of the car)
5. Buy 3 headrests back, why is it difficult with us)))
The bass is good, of course not the same as in ZY or in boxes, but the main condition was space in the trunk. Not everything is finished yet and it’s too early to put an end to sound and work in free air.

Types of subs
Without going into too much detail, let's say that there are 2 main types of subs:
- Active speakers are equipped with a built-in amplifier. Organizing sound in the “top ten” with the help of these subs is much simpler and does not require specific knowledge or the use of additional components.
- Passive speakers are a great area for experimentation. In this case, you can arrange the sound in such a way that passengers get the impression not of an ordinary car showroom, but of a real concert hall. True, you will have to supplement such a sub amplifier.

Note. The quality of active subs in most cases will not satisfy the tastes of a true music lover. If you consider yourself a connoisseur of good, real music, it is better to opt for passive speakers.
Box
Passive subs are divided, in turn, into 3 types:
- The design is of a simple type, made in a ZYa box. There are no air holes in this case. The weaknesses of this design are weak power, the strengths are high-quality bass.
- A more common, but slightly complex design has a special hole in the box for air to pass through. The advantages of this option are a relatively higher efficiency coefficient than in the first case, a bassier and deeper sound, the minus is high cost.
- The third option is a bandpass housing (see Bandpass subwoofer - the best design), rarely used and rather complicated, but with good properties.

Diameter
In addition, subwoofers differ in diameter. Typically, 12-inch speakers are more popular, although 8, 10 and 15-inch models are also known. It is worth knowing that the larger the size of the speaker, the more powerful the sound will be, but at the same time the box increases, taking up more space in a cramped car interior.

About installing a subwoofer in a shelf
Free Air subwoofer - the best choice for a sedan
Usually there is not much space on the shelf. It is impossible to install a large cabinet subwoofer here on a standard plane. The best option is to install low-frequency speakers according to the Free Air principle, when one or two speakers are mounted in a shelf. The role of the body in this case will be performed by the entire volume of the trunk. As a result, you can get deep and soft bass, but you shouldn't count on serious pressure. The sound quality can be improved by vibration and noise insulation of the trunk from the passenger compartment using appropriate materials, for example, vibroplast, vizomat or bitoplast.
You can install either one speaker in the center or two speakers on the edges in the rear shelf. When installing one woofer, preference is given to 12-inch models, when installing two - 10-inch models. With properly selected acoustics and its installation, the difference in sound between these two options is indistinguishable.
What is needed to install a subwoofer
Before starting work, the master prepares the necessary materials:
- multilayer plywood 10–12 mm thick or MDF;
- cardboard;
- self-tapping screws;
- glue and wood putty;
- bolts;
- carpet or other material;
- polyurethane foam;
- vibroplast.
You can’t do without tools: you need a milling machine, a jigsaw with a metal blade, a screwdriver, and a feather drill. We must not forget about personal protective equipment - when cutting metal there is a risk of foreign particles (chips) getting into your eyes.
Main stages of work
Before starting work, it is necessary to prepare the place; for this, the technician removes the rear seat, empties the trunk, removes the false panel from the shelf and the trunk trim adjacent to the rear seat. As a result, he gains access to the metal base of the shelf, where the speaker will be installed.
The work is carried out in several stages:
- using cardboard, the master prepares a pattern for the rear shelf;
- Using this pattern, the geometric dimensions and shape of the structure are transferred to a sheet of plywood;
- in the center where it is planned to install the speaker, a circle of the required diameter is drawn;
- a new shape for the rear shelf is cut out of plywood;
- the shelf may have a complex surface topography, for example, a reinforced center with small pockets on the sides, in this case the craftsman cuts out another, shortened shelf with the same hole;
- tries on the plywood base for the shelf - it is installed easily, nothing interferes with this process;
- Marks the position of the speaker;
- splices two prepared workpieces using wood glue and self-tapping screws;
- While the shelf is drying in the standard shelf, the master uses a jigsaw to cut out a hole for the speaker;
- tries on the finished shelf, if everything is fine, and there is no other way, the master prepares the fastening points with bolts for countersunk, for this purpose he drills recesses in the plywood with a feather drill;
- installs the shelf in place, screws it in place, and then fills the place where the fasteners are installed with wood putty;
- glues the plywood with carpet using universal glue;
- installs the woofer into the hole, mounts the decorative protective panel.
As a result of the work performed, the subwoofer is ready for connection. In some cases, it is necessary to resolve the issue of decorating the shelf from below. In this case, the master cuts out a sheet of plywood according to the pattern, covers it with carpet or other material of your choice and screws it on the inside of the trunk.
Alternative to the rear shelf
Sedan owners can choose another location for the woofer; if there is a lowering rear seat armrest, you can install the speaker behind it, placing it in the trunk.
Amplifier installation
The amplifier can be installed in two ways:
- screw directly to the shelf from below;
- make a false panel between the rear seat and trunk.
Of course, there are many more options for installing an amplifier, but these two are the most common cases of practice.
In the first case, you can use special brackets or make a box according to the size of the amplifier. To do this, use plywood 10–12 mm thick, from which the craftsman cuts out the lid, bottom and side walls of the box. The box components are covered with carpet, after which the parts are tightened with self-tapping screws. The finished box is attached next to the speaker on metal corners. This solution is distinguished by its affordable price, simple installation and the ability to install the amplifier next to the subwoofer (the shorter the cable between them, the better).
In the second case, the craftsman will cut out a panel from 10–12 mm plywood; its shape corresponds to the profile of the luggage compartment along the line of contact between the shelf and the rear window. The false panel is not only the basis for installing a subwoofer amplifier, but also performs a decorative function. Two bars are screwed parallel to each other onto the false panel - this will be the basis for mounting the amplifier. The entire structure is covered with carpet, after which the amplifier is screwed into place. The finished false panel is installed in place and fixed with self-tapping screws.
Why do you need trunk soundproofing?
The trunk space must be completely isolated from the passenger compartment. The posterior partition is usually covered with vibroplast. Also, do not forget about treating the floor and trunk lid. The entire internal space is, in fact, the subwoofer housing. There is not a single subwoofer whose box is made of metal. That is why sound insulation is used, which makes the space as closed as possible for the sound waves created by the speaker.
Connecting and setting up a subwoofer
The signal for the low frequencies can be taken from the speakers installed in the rear doors, passed through a preamplifier and fed to the amplifier. This will reduce cable costs. An alternative is to connect the subwoofer amplifier directly to the head unit. The amplifier is powered directly from the battery through a bulb with a fuse. The control wire is routed from the head unit, which means you don’t have to worry about the amplifier draining the battery during overnight inactivity.
The subwoofer amplifier is configured as usual. The wizard sets sensitivity and low frequency cutoff limits. After completing the work, the technician will adjust the sound to suit your hearing.
High-quality subwoofer for a sedan
One of the most important elements of car audio is the subwoofer. And it is he who is responsible for low frequencies up to 100 Hz. At the same time, human hearing cannot detect the direction of low-frequency waves, so many people think that a subwoofer can be installed almost anywhere.
But this is not entirely true, because acoustic equipment is located differently in different cars. Quite often you can see a subwoofer in the rear parcel shelf of a sedan. This is the most common option for installing such equipment. In this case, the acoustic design will be completely different. For those who are going to install a subwoofer in the rear parcel shelf of a sedan using the “endless screen” or “free air” type, you need to understand that you will need to cut a special hole. After all, you can only buy a car with such a design feature on the secondary market from a car owner who is a music lover.
But the hole will not be enough - you will need to increase the rigidity of such a shelf. To do this, you can use an MDF sheet, which is cut to specified dimensions and attached with bolts. You will also have to eliminate all the cracks and holes that may connect the interior and trunk. By the way, the thicker the shelf, the better the sound will be, since there will be no rattling in the car.
Not all subwoofers are suitable for such acoustic design as “free-air”. The main characteristics when choosing a subwoofer speaker are the Thiel-Small parameters. If you don’t go too deep, the easiest way is to focus on the parameter of the total acoustic quality factor - Qts, which should be greater than 0.55 or close to 0.7. The box for it will be the entire volume of the trunk, so the subwoofer itself will have a rather rigid suspension system.
A sub in the rear parcel shelf of a sedan is never installed next to full-range speakers, especially if they are 6x9 “ovals”. In this case, it will not be possible to achieve normal high-quality sound. Installing such acoustic equipment simply in the trunk of a sedan or on the side wall will not lead to anything good. The fact is that only the lowest frequencies will be heard in the cabin, and this will mainly be the merit of the interior elements.
You cannot install a subwoofer in a sedan on the rear parcel shelf without an amplifier, since in this case you will not be able to achieve decent results. Installation can be done with a closed mounting option. To do this, the barrel is installed in a special box, the volume of which should be approximately 20-30 liters. This way the sound will not be affected by how full the trunk is. Of course, you will have to come to terms with the idea that the luggage compartment will lose a lot in volume.
In the 4caraudio store you can purchase any options for acoustic equipment for installation on the rear parcel shelf in a sedan. To learn more about the range of subwoofers, just call our managers.
How to choose a subwoofer
Choosing the right subwoofer is not only a question of the quality of the speaker or the power of the amplifier. Its design itself has a noticeable “tailoredness” to specific styles of music - for example, subwoofers with a bass reflex are perceived by ear as having a sharper attack (the rear volume does not dampen the movement of the diffuser, and also acts as a sound source), so they have long been loved for synthetic “tink-tink” ”, while the softer and more natural-sounding attack of the closed-back subwoofers will allow you to enjoy not only the blues, but also many rather extreme styles of instrumental music on the move. A Band-pass type case, where the diffuser works on the internal volume on both sides, and all the sound comes out through a hole in the box, gives maximum efficiency, but with a pronounced “hump” in the region of a certain frequency band - such a subwoofer can only be recommended for certain tastes , so in any case you need to listen to a specific instance.
Which subwoofer is better - active or passive? Here the question is solely about budget and requirements: of course, an active subwoofer is easier to connect and install, but sound quality will most likely have to be sacrificed - it’s not for nothing that most high-end products are passive, the amplifier for them is already selected for a specific installation.
Closed enclosure, bass reflex or bandpass? But let’s answer this question simply - choose a subwoofer by at least listening to it in a car of similar volume, and not in a store: the difference will be very strong. And, of course, listen to exactly the music that you like - then you can understand exactly how suitable it is.
Which brand's car subwoofer is better? Over the years, the domestic car audio equipment market has developed a group of favorites whose products are always popular. Car subwoofers from companies such as Sony, Alpine, Pioneer, Helix, JBL, Kicx, Yamaha and other famous manufacturers have long proven themselves to be the best.
Where to put the subwoofer: in the trunk or in the shelf?
I heard that from the trunk, due to good noise, the bass is not very noticeable. Many people say that in Gloria-Cedric it is better to embed the sub into the rear parcel shelf. By the way, I don’t have a regular subwoofer. Who, what does he think about this and who has which sub and where is it located?
Definitely put it somewhere in the salon. Either in a shelf or instead of an armrest.
Hello, in my opinion I think it’s better to embed it in the rear parcel shelf.
I have a fairly strong sub in the trunk, it’s not very audible - it’s 100 poods to put it in the shelf, but the sub needs to be taken free air

crashed into the shelf ten inches and was fine
The dimensions are more or less clear, but which brand of free air sub should I buy? and price?
PS I’m too lazy to search on the Internet myself, and I haven’t decided yet whether I need it.

I agree with the question. By the way, is 10 inches enough? Has anyone tried to put a larger sub in the shelf or is there no point?
insert and do the analysis. We'll see if it's necessary or not. )))))
If you set it to 10, then the hole in the shelf needs to be enlarged.
WHAT COMPANY DO YOU RECOMMEND TO SUPPLY? WHAT MODEL?
But in my opinion, our standard hole is exactly 10? or is it still at 8?
I tried to push it into 8.10 and it didn’t work. ))))) I’ve left this idea for now. I’m looking for a suitable sub for 8..
I put the case in the trunk and cut it into it, approximately so as not to take up the useful space of the trunk itself, the box turned out to be 20 liters, a fusion sub 12 inches, an amplifier under the passenger one, and I attached a capacitor can between the rear passengers, I don’t know what to call this place, In general, there is a cardan running from below and this technological bulge above it in the cabin is on top of it, closer to the amplifier, I wanted to install the sub in the shelf, I even cut out a layout, but when I delved into the intricacies of the whole process, I was interested for a long time, asking, the point is that if you install in the shelf, you need to make complete noise from the entire trunk, reinforcement, because it will gouge into the body itself, with the box it’s the same process but easier, depending on where you do it yourself or in a studio, for me the cross was prevented from putting it in the shelf by the small distance to gas tank and I don’t regret it at all, the bass is solid, deep and pleasant, it doesn’t overwhelm with its boom and doesn’t shout out over the entire cabin acoustics, it plays into the body, not like some people even get a headache, it was stupidly licking, because the point of the sub itself is not where it stands and don’t sound like a speaker, but resonate with the body, why don’t you make Shumka in the trunk? You can’t get around to it, but the standard one doesn’t do a bad job either, take a big sub, a small one won’t convey all the sensations, especially for this type of ship, depending on what kind of music you listen to and what kind of sound you want, yes and be sure to take the drive to the harness, some people install it like this, I had it like that too, but when I installed it in the trunk since then, it shows what it is capable of, before it was of course, but not quite, if you want the depth of rigidity, the power of the standard one is not enough generator, no matter the car, it produces a constant voltage to all devices and such dips in voltage will not lead to anything good, dips at the peak take a lot from me, on the bank itself it shows -3-4V in the network when the engine is running 14.2 V used to be in a Mazda 3 without it, so at full peak the light was blinking like a light-music and the subwoofer itself was bubbling, a successful process.
