What to do if the radio sounds when the car engine is running

A low-frequency speaker system usually consists of a loudspeaker and a low-frequency amplifier. This design can be made in a common housing or consist of a speaker and a separate amplifier. During the operation of any sound amplification system, certain malfunctions may occur. Some require serious repairs, but simple defects can be fixed on your own. One of the “standard” malfunctions is the appearance of low-frequency background in the dynamics. It’s easy to find out why the subwoofer hums when the power is turned on.

How to get rid of noise and background in car speakers

Crosstalk, noise, and background noise when the engine is running are common problems not only for novice car audio enthusiasts. They may appear after the system is turned on for the first time, or they may appear completely unexpectedly - “Yesterday it didn’t happen, but today it appeared. I didn’t touch anything at all.”

The network is full of lengthy materials on how to find the cause and combat these unpleasant phenomena. Go through the checklist below and in most cases you will be able to solve the background or interference problem.

IMPORTANT! Carry out all switching on a de-energized system. Not just turned off, but de-energized.

How to troubleshoot speakers

The most important thing is to identify the cause of noise in the speakers. After this, you just need to use the troubleshooting instructions that suit your case.

Reason 1: The problem is caused by settings in the computer

First of all, you need to check whether the sound is turned on and whether the device connected to the PC is displayed. The next step is to reinstall the drivers. Some of the components installed on your computer may be outdated, and this may cause audio problems.

To see if the device is visible on your computer, use these instructions:

  1. Right-click on the sound icon, which is located in the “Taskbar” near the layout.
  2. From the context menu, select “Sounds”.

In the tab that opens, open the “Playback” item. A column should be displayed there if it is connected. If it is not there, then the problem is most likely with the driver and/or connectors.

You can solve the problem with outdated drivers as follows:

Open Control Panel. This can be done in different ways on different Windows. For example, click on “Start” and select “Control Panel” on the right side of the menu that opens (this is for Windows 7). In 8 and 10 you need to right-click on “Start” and select the desired item from the context menu.

Wiring Location

A common cause of hum, interference and noise is the close location of speaker and interconnect cables to the power cables, or to the standard wiring of the car (this also includes chargers, navigators, etc.). When installing, pull them along different sides of the body, and if intersections cannot be avoided, then place the interblocks and speaker wires at right angles to all the others.

Method 2: Installing new sound card drivers

If the above method did not help you, the next step is to update the drivers for your computer's sound card. The fact is that the system interacts with the speakers precisely through this software, and its outdated version can cause the effect in question. We have already given an example of performing such a procedure, so refer to the material at the link below - it is quite suitable as a standard instruction.

Why does the radio sound?

There are several reasons why this problem may occur. The first of them is the occurrence of interference due to contact of the amplifier body with the body or unreliable antenna shielding. In this case, when listening to a radio station with a mediocre signal level, a squealing or crackling noise will be heard when the engine is running. If you press the gas pedal, the frequency of the strong background will increase in accordance with the engine speed.

The background often appears due to the induction of high-voltage discharges created by the ignition system of a gasoline engine. Also, the level of crackling noise from car media system speakers increases due to the use of low-quality high-voltage wires and faulty spark plugs. The cause of a monotonous squeak or squeal from the speakers may be a faulty generator. Interference provokes sparking brushes, worn commutator plates, and a short circuit in the stator winding.

Also, a strong background appears due to a malfunction of the radio, for example due to the drying out of the filter capacitor in the power circuit.

In this case, the radio freezes and reacts sensitively to all sources of interference in the car, including the DVR or radar detector.

Some media systems have a line wire fuse, which is placed between the ground on the board and the side terminals of the RCA sockets. When the negative wire of an amplifier connected in this way leaves, this fuse blows so that current does not flow through the interconnections of the radio.

In this situation, the linear outputs turn out to be ungrounded, which is why the radio sounds in any operating mode.

The interference is induced on the cables connecting the amplifier to the car radio. Other problems include loose connectors or damage to the screen shell. If there is strong interference when starting the engine, then the starter is to blame. Brushes can also spark in it.

What to do

First of all, all car radio wiring is checked for damage. If the antenna plug is not seated tightly, it should be removed and cleaned of dirt and oxides. If the screen shell of the radio frequency cable is damaged or torn, the plug must be re-soldered. If the background does not disappear, then the generator is checked for wear of the brushes and commutator.

If interference occurs when the engine starts, the starter is checked. Defective parts are replaced in all cases. The spark plugs and high-voltage wires should be checked. If breakdowns and cracks are detected, parts are replaced. Line output connections are also inspected, cleaned and crimped. Power circuits are checked for connection reliability.

Another way to solve this problem is to connect the radio to another point, for example directly to the battery. To replace the line output fuse, you can contact a service center. To eliminate the background, you need to follow a simple rule: you should not lay the car radio wires in the car next to the harnesses of the ignition and engine control systems.

Motorists of our time believe that any Chinese-made product is a cheap fake that does not deserve attention. Maybe in ancient times China produced mass production of low-quality products, but now everything has changed. As the years go by, Chinese manufacturers make technological breakthroughs, thereby improving the quality of products produced in their factories. Therefore, at the present time, Pioneer radio tape recorders are very high-quality media systems, taking precedence over their competitors in terms of price.

The Pioneer radio tape recorder stands out from the general list with its high-quality sound and enormous functionality. But with frequent use, some difficulties arise. One of which is that the radio in the car starts making noise.

Car radio

To prevent the presence of audible noise, you should use the following rules:

  • The grounding circuit is created so that all components of the “mass” converge at one point. An excellent solution is to use the negative terminal of the battery or a point on the body where the negative terminal of the power source is grounded. When choosing wiring, you should focus on high-quality stranded wires, the production of which uses deoxygenated copper. The contact point between the cable and the housing must be cleaned of paint, dirt and rust. It is recommended to terminate the cable by crimping or soldering a special tip in the form of a ring of suitable diameter. When creating the wiring of grounding cables and power, purchase gold-plated connectors and terminals;
  • The metal parts of the audio system should not come into contact anywhere with the vehicle body. Otherwise, when installing acoustics with your own hands, the car owner will provoke the appearance of a ground loop, with all the ensuing consequences;
  • Once all the wiring is connected to the radio and two pairs of speakers, check its functionality. Turn on the stereo system and perform the test with the antenna disconnected. Ideally there should be no noise;
  • Next, you need to disconnect the stereo system's ground from the body. If everything is done correctly, the sound will disappear and the radio will turn off. This is direct evidence of the presence of a single ground point and the absence of loops. No one can give you a 100% guarantee that there will be no noise, but you will still be 90% safe. It also happens that when installing an audio system, it is not possible to ground all elements at a single point. The solution to the problem is to select another point to connect the mass. This case is effective only when the voltage difference between the base and additional grounding points does not exceed 0.2V. As an option, the amplifier is grounded to the rear of the car, and the equalizer, radio and crossover are grounded on the body partition between the engine and the passenger compartment.

I would also like to note that a good filter in the system is the presence of a capacitor.

The reason for the appearance of additional background when the engine is running

Owners of Chinese Pioneer car radios sooner or later still encountered bad sound in the car. This can be described as a slight breakdown of the radio, which makes listening to music inconvenient. When any additional background noise appears from the speakers, the car owner immediately thinks that the radio needs to be changed. There's no need to rush. You first need to figure out why the radio is making noise. Next, we will consider the reasons for the appearance of unnecessary noise produced by the speakers.

The first option is the appearance of a background when you turn on the radio, this means that the antenna cable wire going to ground has come loose. You don’t have to do anything complicated here, you just need to screw it into place. Second, if additional noise is heard when playing CDs or other digital media, then most likely the wiring shielding from both the radio to the amplifier and to the speakers has been damaged. That is, the outer sheath of the cable, which protects the internal electromagnetic field emitted by the wires from the influence of external fields on them, is broken.

Troubleshooting noise-producing problems

The first case, when listening to the radio, you will just need to tightly screw the wire coming from the antenna to ground. Second case, if the wires are damaged, look through all the audio wiring and replace the damaged section. It is best to throw the wire intact without additives. The normal option would, of course, be to lay special audio cables specifically designed for this.

The third and probably the most basic point, where you don’t need to go without knowledge or without a specialist, is the fuse. First you need to determine what is wrong with the fuse. We close the negative line wire to the housing; if the background disappears, take it to the service center. Well, if you decide to do it yourself, then everything is in order:

  • First you need to remove and remove the top cover of the device.
  • We find the line output fuse; on Pioneer radio boards it is marked with an exclamation mark and looks like an SMD resistor with the letter “P” painted on top.
  • If you don’t find the same one, then we change it in the proven old-fashioned way - we solder in several “strands” of copper wire, popularly called a “bug”. If a short circuit does occur, such a jumper will easily melt without causing harm.
  • We check for functionality.
  • We put everything back together in reverse order.

Pioneer fuse

It will take you about 25-30 minutes. But keep in mind that you will not receive guarantees for the work performed from anyone. If your radio burns out after such actions, only you will be to blame.

At the fourth time, crimp the tulips.

Car radio tulips

If the radio is playing when the engine is off, then you just need to thoroughly solder the linear output contact to the ground contact. And just in case, crimp all the contacts that are in the radio connections.

Weight of the radio or amplifier.

minus the Akum and you will be happy!

There are a lot of options for tips. Starting with power supply and ending with interblocks. Read the FAQ in the car audio community.

I “cured” this kind of interference with ferite rings.

There was the same bullshit, I connected it from the battery. Nothing helped. I rang the tulip braid to ground and it turned out that it was broken. It was decided to put the braid on ground and lo and behold, the background disappeared. And no diode bridges, condensers, ferrites, or other crap had to be changed (installed). and on the way to Nikolla Tesla... well, well...

To my shame, I really don’t know much about electricity, even though I know Tesla. But my braid is already thick. But here, as I understand it, someone advises connecting the minus to the radio. The disadvantage of the radio is also on the ground, because otherwise the radio turns off when the dimensions are turned on. Maybe I’m talking nonsense, honestly, I don’t know, but I don’t want to use negative power from the battery, it’s crap. There are two options left: Turn it down, hear only low frequencies, the speakers don’t sound at all, and therefore don’t produce any noise. At the same time, 4 speakers auto + sub are working. Set it to medium, hear all 6 speakers + sub, and endure it. And another option is to play it so loud that you can’t hear the background)). Or I’ll probably screw up the stabilizer or capacitor. Thank you all for your attention and advice, I really began to know a little more!

The stabilizer is unlikely to help here, but the Conder may well be... by the way, the braid should be on the ground of both the amp and the Mayfun. The braid is a screen that receives all interference and merges it into minus. There is another option to replace the “tulip” “tulip” cable with a higher quality one, where the central cores are wrapped in a falyug and a dense “mesh” screen on top. Still, I believe that this is a tip.

Setting up a subwoofer on a computer

A subwoofer is an integral and most powerful element of professional acoustics. The main feature of a subwoofer is that this device can transmit low frequency sound waves. The total frequency range of the subwoofer is from 15 to 200 Hz.

The subwoofer is used in professional audio audio systems, however, an increasing number of users of personal computers and laptops are buying subwoofers for home use. The subwoofer can be connected to speakers. Please note that for the best sound effect, the speakers should have as much power as possible.

First of all, pay attention to the placement of the subwoofer within the room. Incorrect placement of the device may degrade the final sound. The best option for placing a subwoofer is an angle. It is in the corner that the sound will have the most profound effect. Install the subwoofer at least one meter away from the speakers.
