TANNOY Arden is a popular acoustic system among audiophiles, produced in the second half of the 70s of the last century, manufactured in Great Britain.
The design of the acoustic systems is so different that you don’t know what to expect... The stage in both copies is simply enormous in scale, erasing all conceivable and inconceivable boundaries, the room is filled with correctly positioned sound images. Only at TANNOY Arden the entire stage action is located with almost unlimited depth strictly behind the acoustic systems (provided that the acoustics are at least 1 meter from the back wall). The Sony APM-4's stage does not go as far back as the TANNOY's, but it can move forward a little. This property can be beneficial when located close to the back wall of the room. In general, both pairs of speaker systems are not too sensitive to location, since they have front-mounted bass reflexes and fairly wide front panels. This prevents the mid frequencies from “bending around” and being reflected from the walls of the room. In terms of stage height, the Sony APM-4 seats the listener in the mezzanine, where the feeling of the musical performance is quite low. Perhaps this was done due to the national characteristics of the Japanese, who use low furniture or do without it at all. Sitting on a standard Euro sofa or chair with a height of 40 cm, the tweeter is located below the level of the listener’s ears. For use with standard furniture, we recommend installing the stands on spikes (which will provide additional decoupling from the floor) and placing them on marble slabs to raise the center of sound radiation by at least 10 cm.
From the 380mm driver and almost twice the volume of the TANNOY Arden cabinet, we expected much greater output than from the small square Sony ESPRIT APM-4 driver with a diameter of 250mm x 250mm. As a result, Sony played louder and more bass with the same power supplied from the amplifier. Most likely, this was affected by the lower resistance, 6 Ohms for Sony and 8 Ohms for TANNOY. Although the latter, according to the output declared by the manufacturer, are 1 dB/W/m more sensitive.
TANNOY Arden is more successful with simple, desaturated musical compositions sounding at an average volume level. At low power, compared to the APM-4, there was a lack of lower bass, and at high volume, sound images turned into mush. TANNOY also has a characteristic coloring that softens the upper overtones of vocals, plucking, and percussion, giving them a slight roughness and lethargy. This effect mainly manifests itself when low and medium frequencies are simultaneously present in a musical signal. This most likely occurs due to the design features of the coaxial driver. Where the speaker for the “high-frequency driver” is the diffuser of the “woofer”, which, when a low-frequency component appears, begins to oscillate, thereby distorting high frequencies. Against the background of the general large-scale and musicality of TANNOY Arden, this effect does not concentrate attention on itself. In general, the music coming from TANNOY Arden is no less captivating and emotional, it is saturated with certain colors and sounds something like the old one - “warm and cozy”. This has a particularly beneficial effect on old recordings (not remastered, even if recorded on CD). TANNOY Arden helps to return to the 50-60s, to the era of 78 rpm turntables and 100% tube radio equipment.
The Sony ESPRIT APM-4 generally sounds more realistic, smoother, more detailed and faster with a wider frequency range, both low and high. But they cannot compare with TANNOY Arden in conveying the mood of bygone eras.

In playback mode, it allows you to quickly find the desired recording, orienting yourself using the “calendar” table of tracks displayed on the display. If you want to set your own program
playback of recordings, the Jog Dial will make this task easier.
It is enough to use it to select the desired entry, press the Program button and it will be entered into the memory and music “calendar” with a capacity of 32 tracks. You can also play recordings in random order or set any of them to repeat.
The mini-system amplifier has a musical output power of 80 W per channel (30 W x 2 in the DIN standard). The system's digital processor has a menu with 5 positions to create an acoustic environment of various genres: Rock, Pop, Jazz, Classical, Dance. The processor can also correct dynamic range and suppress vocals in karaoke mode (singing to musical accompaniment). To enhance the bass, there is a DBFB (Dynamic Bass Feedback) system that, when pressed repeatedly, increases the bass component of a piece of music step by step. During listening, a 9-band spectrogram of the signal is displayed on the display, allowing you to evaluate the quality and composition of the recording.
The mini-system is equipped with three-way speaker systems with bass reflexes, which cope perfectly even with peak output power loads.
The tuner with a digital frequency synthesizer has a memory for 20 radio stations in the FM range and 10 each in the LW and MW bands. Its display shows the names of stations stored in memory. In accordance with the Stereo Plus logo, reception of stereo broadcasts is provided in both VHF bands (Russian and European). The system timer has 3 functions: Daily, Rec, Sleep to turn the minisystem on and off at a given time, and therefore it can become an alarm clock for you.
The CD player is equipped with an advanced pulse digital-to-analog converter and a special digital filter.
The two-cassette tape recorder is equipped with double auto-reverse, electronic switch control (Feather Touch) and a Dolby B/C NR noise reduction system. There is a system for automatically searching for musical fragments, the possibility of synchronized dubbing from a CD to a cassette, as well as copying from cassette to cassette at normal and double speed.
