As a rule, the outputs of computer sound cards do not provide a high-quality signal when headphones are connected, due to the insufficient signal power level. On the Internet you can easily find a whole bunch of simple circuits of various headphone amplifiers, usually with 2-3 low-power transistors, which seem to solve this problem. In a sense, they really solve it, but this concerns only a slight increase in power, but you cannot get high-quality sound even with good headphones with their help. In any case, I had to try many similar simple schemes, but when listening to music files I still wanted something better. In the end, I returned to the old scheme, which I collected back in the late 80s of the last century!
This circuit was published at that distant time as part of some device (I can’t remember which one) as a “control amplifier”. Nevertheless, such a “control” amplifier in practice will give odds to many other circuits based on transistors and microcircuits in terms of sound quality, since it is a low-power amplifier based on a class “A” circuit. I won’t write about the “warm tube” sound (the article is not about that :-), but I’m almost sure that everyone who assembles and tries such a circuit will not later regret the time lost on assembly.
