WHF review: Harbeth HL-Compact-7ES-3 - British classic

Once you start listening, you will not immediately recognize the merits of these speakers, but over time you will appreciate the achievements of the classical English sound school. First of all, this concerns the reproduction of the human voice: having played Mark Knopfler's disc, we were surprised by the clarity of words and intonation - compared to the Harbeth, even more expensive speakers have problems with diction. An impeccably calibrated midrange makes it easier to perceive not only speech, but also music. Chamber music sounds especially advantageous on Harbeth: the harpsichord sonatas of J. S. Bach performed by Olga Martynova are simply mesmerizing. The speakers are also capable of performing symphonic works, but an experienced listener will probably notice that the dynamic range is compressed or, more correctly, concentrated in the zone of quiet and medium volume sounds. But since they carry most of the semantic, intonation and spatial information, a deeper perception of the classics with Harbeth is guaranteed. You can also listen to modern music with pleasure, provided that the recording is made with proper artistic and technical skill (it may well be old and imperfect).

If we talk about possible disadvantages, we cannot fail to mention that the speakers can somewhat emphasize the highs if they are pointed directly at the listener. In this case, standard decorative grilles will help, but when using a vinyl turntable or a tube amplifier, this problem does not arise at all.

HL-Compact-7ES-3 has found a good balance: the authenticity inherent in monitors is combined with sufficient scale - so that you don’t look in the direction of floor-standing speakers. They make it easy to listen and understand the music, and this is the main thing.

Briefly about the company

Immediately after the end of the war, the British Broadcasting Corporation began fundamental research to create its own high-quality control speakers suitable for FM television broadcasting and recording. The studio monitors available to the BBC were based on the American company Rice-Kellogg's full-range speakers, developed back in the 1920s - they were quite capable of handling limited frequency range AM speech programs, but were not suitable for recording music. Experiments led by talented engineers D. Shorter and D. Harwood led to the construction of several first-class speakers with diffusers based on polymer materials in the 70s. In 1977, Dudley Harwood left the BBC and opened the Harbeth company to produce monitors with speakers made of polypropylene, a material that had higher repeatability properties than the then used bextrain. Harbeth HL Mk1 became the world's first speakers with drivers made of polypropylene, which is still popular. In 1986, engineer Alan Shaw, who today heads the Harbeth company, joined the creative search.

Description of Harbeth HL COMPACT 7ES-3

Attention!
Price varies depending on finish. For the cost of acoustics in the finish you are interested in, please call our salon! Bookshelf speaker system, 2-way, with front bass reflex, power: 150 W, frequency range: 46 Hz - 20 kHz, sensitivity: 86 dB, impedance: 6 Ohm, dimensions: 520 x 273 x 315 mm, weight: 13, 2 kg .

Finish options: Mahogany, Eucalyptus, Maple, Cherry, Ebony. Compared to modern speakers, these speakers look somewhat unusual and archaic, but thirty-five years ago, when Harbeth began its work, this design was the standard of technical fashion. Much has changed in acoustics since then, and only Harbeth (and to some extent Spendor) has remained faithful to the technical heritage of the BBC. So, before us are classic medium-sized monitors, implemented in a relatively light and - by today's standards - weakly damped housing. The front and back panels are screwed rather than glued in place - something Harbeth believes is essential to achieving the right sound. The large diameter of the midrange/woofer and the wide front panel seem to be an obstacle to obtaining good spatial performance, but listening shows that this is not the case. By experimenting with height and angle, you'll get a natural, speaker-free soundstage that easily accommodates three listeners. What's more, the wide front panels reduce the impact of room walls on midrange tonal balance, so you can freely adjust the bass level by varying the distance from the rear wall.
