Criterias of choice

A good speaker system should be suitable for the room where it will be installed and meet the goals that the user sets for it. Despite the wide range of speakers on sale, knowledge of the basic technical characteristics will simplify the selection of suitable speakers and help you buy the optimal acoustics.

Power

The power of the speaker system primarily affects the sound volume of the speakers . Each type of audio system has its own optimal values: concert models will have the highest values, while for computer acoustics the values will be an order of magnitude lower.

Important! The power of the audio system should be taken into account to the greatest extent when selecting an external amplifier.

Number of lanes

Speaker systems reproduce sounds of different frequencies. Single-way models use only one speaker for the entire range. These are most often inexpensive devices with low technical characteristics, since the use of a single broadband head cannot provide high-quality sound. High-quality devices use the multi-band principle of constructing the sound spectrum, that is, the speakers reproduce their own frequency range. On sale you can find models from 2 to 7 stripes.

Important! The more bands, the more accurate the sound will be relative to the original. Typically, different speaker designs are used to reproduce different frequency ranges.

Frequency range

The frequency range indicated by manufacturers characterizes the lower and upper limits in which sound reproduction occurs. A person is able to distinguish sounds in the range from 15-20 to 20,000 Hz. As a rule, most speaker systems fit within this framework. The wider the range, the richer the sound will be. To reproduce low frequencies, the system can have a built-in or external subwoofer.

Number of channels

Sound quality is largely determined by the number of channels, that is, sound sources. This technical characteristic is displayed in two numbers, the first of which is the number of acoustic channels, the second is the presence of a built-in subwoofer (0 is not present, 1 is present). That is, the number 5.1 on the device means that the speaker has 5 speakers and a built-in subwoofer.

Control

The speaker control system can be located either exclusively on the device body or be remote, that is, all settings can be made from the remote control . Many wireless audio systems can also be controlled from a smartphone.

Dimensions

The size of the speakers is closely related to their sound characteristics. For example, with more internal space in the case, the audio system reproduces low-pitched sounds better.

On a note! There is also a direct relationship between the dimensions of the system and the area of the room: the smaller the room, the smaller the speakers can be.

However, the use of modern materials, special speaker design and digital sound processing contribute to the miniaturization of loudspeakers.

Interfaces

The number of available interfaces affects how many devices can be connected to the audio system. To ensure that connecting the speakers to the sound source does not cause problems, when purchasing, you should pay attention to the availability of the necessary cables and connectors. So, the main interfaces:

  • audio jacks;
  • USB port;
  • optical input for transmitting multi-channel sound;
  • HDMI port.

Wireless connectivity

Considering the way speaker systems are connected to a sound source, all devices are divided into:

  • wired - the signal is transmitted through a cable, and the quality of playback greatly depends on the materials used to make the wire and connectors;
  • wireless – data transfer is carried out via wireless communication protocols, for example, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, NFC, AirPlay, DTS Play-Fi.

Other criteria

The sound quality is greatly influenced by the design of the speakers, as well as the materials of the housing, cables and connectors. So, in accordance with the acoustic design, the following main types of speakers can be distinguished:

  • open type - speakers without a back wall, such models have an airy sound;
  • closed type - speakers without any holes, which provides good directional sound, but at the same time requires a large internal volume, so such models most often belong to floor-standing speaker systems;
  • bass reflex - this design requires the presence of a bass reflex (otherwise - a hole with a pipe), which ensures the reproduction of low-frequency sounds;
  • with an acoustic labyrinth - these speakers use a long pipe with multiple bends located inside the cabinet to improve bass reproduction;
  • horn - in this acoustics, sound waves do not come out of the speakers directly, but through a horn, which is installed close to the emitter;
  • with a passive radiator - this is an improved version of bass reflex speakers, in which a passive speaker is used instead of a pipe;
  • bandpass - designed on the principle of a bass reflex, but the body is divided in the middle into separate chambers of different volumes.

The best manufacturers

Among the numerous manufacturing companies, both world leaders of the 20th century and new companies enjoy the trust of buyers, including: Bose4, Bowers & Wilkins, DELI4, JBL, HECO, Klipsch, Monitor, Philips, Pioneer, Polk, Sonus Faber, Sony and Yamaha.

Rating 2022

To navigate the variety of speaker systems on the Russian market, it will be useful to study the 2019 rating, which takes into account the ratings and reviews of owners.

Best built-in model

The popular Klipsch R-3800-W model with its recognizable signature modern design is designed for wall installation. This is a two-way passive acoustic system of a closed type with a sensitivity of 93 dB and a reproducible frequency range of 46-20000 Hz, attracting the attention of buyers with an optimal ratio of sound quality to cost.

Best Concert Model

The professional audio system KV2 Audio VHD2.0 with a power of 2000 W is ideal for concerts in large halls and outdoors. This three-way, multi-driver passive speaker handles heavy loads, delivers volume up to 142 dB, and reproduces audio from 60 to 22,000 Hz. The main disadvantages are the extremely high cost and weight of 70 kg.

Best floor model

The Bowers & Wilkins 683 S2 speaker system consists of 2 three-way bass reflex speakers, made in 2 colors to choose from. The range of reproduced frequencies is 30-50000 Hz. It is also possible to connect LF and HF separately.

On a note! When choosing this model, you should take into account that the speakers are installed on fairly wide platforms, and to connect to a sound source you will need an amplifier with a power of 25-200 W.

Two-way speakers DALI Zensor 3 are bookshelf speakers from the large Zensor family, which has won several awards for sound reproduction quality. The model is available in 3 colors, operates in the range of 50-26000 Hz, is a passive audio system, and therefore requires an amplifier with a power of up to 125 W. Owners note the high build quality and almost perfect sound of the speakers .

The best closed model

The Heco Aurora 300 closed-type speaker system is distinguished by a wide range of reproduced frequencies (32-42500 Hz), the possibility of separate HF and LF connections and gold-plated connectors. However, for correct operation you will need an amplifier up to 150 W. The set includes 2 acoustic two-way bass reflex speakers with a power of 80 W.

Best open model

Open floor systems are not popular with buyers due to their high cost and bulky housing. For those users who are looking for compact models with an open acoustic design, you should pay attention to the Klipsch R-5800-W built-in speakers. This two-way passive system is wall-mounted and does not take up space in the room. The playback frequency range is 40-20000 Hz. For ease of maintenance, the outer grille is removable.

The best model for TV

The small but powerful YAMAHA YSP-2700 TV speaker, otherwise known as a soundbar, received the most positive reviews. This 7.1 soundbar provides high-quality sound reproduction. The model is an active audio system with a subwoofer, which additionally supports Wi-Fi and AirPlay protocols.

The best model for a computer

The compact and fairly budget-friendly Pioneer DM-40BT speaker system consists of 2 two-way speakers that reproduce sound within the range of 70-30,000 Hz. Due to their small dimensions, both speakers can be placed compactly on a table or shelf. Speakers can be connected either using a cable or via Bluetooth 4.2. The system is also suitable for wirelessly listening to audio files from a smartphone or tablet.

The best model for home

Monitor Audio Bronze is a Hi-Fi speaker system for the home that will seamlessly fit into any interior and allow even demanding audiophiles to enjoy their favorite music and movies. 2.5-way speakers reproduce sound in the range of 34-30000 Hz and are passive, so connecting them will require an external amplifier with a power of up to 150 W.

The best model in the car

Car acoustics Hertz MLK 1650.3 received an EISA award. This is a two-way component system with an external crossover that distributes the sound spectrum between the speakers. The range of reproduced frequencies is 40-28000 Hz. Disadvantages: quite high cost and the need for professional installation.

Best wireless model

The Bose S1 Pro two-way acoustic system with Bluetooth is a universal portable device with a built-in amplifier, which, due to its characteristics, belongs to the concert class. The portable design of the speaker allows the body to be positioned in several positions. The volume and power of the speakers is enough to work in medium-sized halls, and thanks to the battery, concerts can be held outdoors without being tied to a power source.

On a note! In addition to other advantages of this audio system, users note the presence of a 3-channel mixer and a ToneMatch system for processing signals from an acoustic guitar and microphone.

The light weight of the device (6.8 kg) and the presence of a handle make the column easy to transport.

The most powerful model

One of the most powerful acoustics in the world is the premium home HI END system MT-Power Performance 5.1. It consists of 2 front and 2 rear speakers, a center channel and an active subwoofer. The total power of the system is 1190 W, so it can be safely purchased for home theaters and rooms with an area of more than 50 m2. The frequency range for sound reproduction is 35-22000 W.

So, in order to choose the optimal acoustic system, you should take into account the characteristics of the room, the type of equipment to which it will be connected, as well as your own preferences. But before purchasing, we recommend watching a video review of the model you like, which will allow you to evaluate its dimensions, main characteristics and, in part, its sound.

Bookshelf Speaker Review: Best Value for Money

B&W 685 S2 $660

“We would recommend these speakers to our friends for their first introduction to the world of hi-fi, and we can’t think of a better recommendation for the B&W 685.” We said this about S2 during the first testing - and exactly a year later we are ready to repeat these words.

For their price range they are simply excellent. No other pair of speakers in the same segment can match them in terms of power and energetic dynamics. Numerous layers of detail create nuances and textures that bring instruments and voices to life in stunning realism.

The song Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana hits the listener with a waterfall of sounds; The 685 S2 packs so much power and depth into the lower frequency range that you can physically feel the aggression oozing from the grunge guitars and slashing drums. The bass line goes deep and is characterized by enthusiasm as well as enviable control.

The attack and decay of each note is exceptionally precise. The ability to produce fast, energetic and moving rhythms makes the sound irresistible.

The dynamics of these B&Ws are excellent; they flawlessly meticulously convey the shifts in tone and build-up of tension in The Dead Weather's "60 Feet Tall." HF floats freely in a transparent and voluminous sound field. The expressiveness and emotionality of the voices makes a strong impression.

These speakers are candid enough that poor quality recordings will clearly show up; but they do not highlight shortcomings, but try to do everything possible so that the listener gets maximum pleasure. Even long-familiar albums performed by the 685 S2 will sparkle with new and unexpected colors.

Sturdy and weighty cases are available in black or white finish. Next to the chic Triangle Esprit Titus EZ they seem rustic, but on the racks they look very stylish and impressive.

The signature B&W midrange/woofer drivers with Kevlar cones are eye-catching, but even more pleasing are the brand new metal grilles on the tweeters, which previously looked completely defenseless. They not only prevent damage to sensitive metal diffusers, but also expand the angular radiation pattern.

It took B&W seven years to create the S2 version. In particular, the tweeter dome became more rigid, which increased sound accuracy, and the HF emitter itself was acoustically decoupled from the body to reduce vibrations. A new mushroom-shaped plug in the center of the midrange/woofer increases damping; in total, all this forms more elastic and energetic bass compared to the original and clear highs, perfectly coordinated with other frequencies.

These are still some of the most amazing speakers we've seen at this price point. Only the agile and musical Triangle Esprit Titus EZ can compete with them. If you want to experience the true joy of listening, be sure to check out B&W.

Grade: 5

PROS: Strong and powerful sound – clear, precise and agile; rich and deep low frequencies; enviable detail

CONS: The Triangle model has slightly better mobility and a brighter appearance

VERDICT: B&W acoustics still have no equal in this price category

Figures and facts

  • Power: 100W
  • Sensitivity: 87 dB
  • Resistance: 8 ohms
  • Dual cable connection: Yes

Cabasse MT32 Antigua $550

Powerful, spacious and exceptionally pleasant sound; If these words sound like music in your soul, you should get acquainted with the Cabasse MT32 Antigua speaker.

These speakers are quite large for bookshelf speakers, but their sound matches their size - it is also powerful and large-scale, while being extremely open and pleasant to the ear. Hans Zimmer's compositions are performed majestically and dynamically, and Nina Simone's soulful voice delights with warmth and fullness.

Cabasse is characterized by a special soft detail that caresses the ear and at the same time does not reduce the integrity of the sound. The harshness and harshness of recordings is smoothed out by these speakers. Treble is open and clear, voices are completely intelligible.

Despite the fullness and generosity of the bass, it lacks a little of the energy and determination usually associated with speakers of this size. We would like the bass to be deeper and punchier. If a little more spring and movement could be added - like the B&W 685 S2 or the Triangle Esprit Titus EZ - it would noticeably improve the Cabasse's relaxed sound.

The jagged rhythms of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross's On We March require more precise timing than the MT32s can offer, but they make up for this somewhat with the sheer size of the sound. The voices are a little lacking in depth, and the dynamics are a little lacking in meticulousness in handling its significant differences.

But even though Cabasse has a less overt sound than the aforementioned competitors, it is still so rich and open that it is impossible not to love it. His infectious enthusiasm encourages hours of listening to these speakers.

Large and squat, yet surprisingly lightweight, the speakers require a lot of space in the room. The point is not only that they themselves are quite large, but also that they are best played in open space. Mount them too close to the wall and you'll get even lazier bass and lose a fair amount of the volume that makes them sound so captivating.

The quality of workmanship and finishing (walnut or ebony) is excellent, although the simple design looks a little banal.

But despite its undemanding appearance, the MT32 Antigua traces its lineage back to the High-End Cabasse models. The letters "MT" in the name stand for the "midrange tweeter" of the DOM 37 - it is based on technologies developed for the flagship La Sphere and L'Ocean models with seven-figure price tags. It is a pity that these speakers did not also inherit the spectacular spherical shape of their predecessors.

The main impression from listening to the MT32 Antigua is their exceptionally light and pleasant sound. They're not the most precise, punchy or revealing speakers, but they have amazing volume for their price range. If you have enough space for them, Cabasse will do everything to please you.

Grade: 4

PROS: Large-scale, spacious, full-blooded sound; detail; design; ease of sound

CONS: Near the wall, the bass becomes boomy; inferior to competitors in accuracy and meticulousness

VERDICT: Enviable scale and softness provide tireless and pleasant listening

Figures and facts

  • Power: 75 W
  • Sensitivity: 88 dB
  • Resistance: 8 ohms
  • Dual cable connection: No
  • Finish options: 2
  • Dimensions (H×W×D): 41×22×30 cm

Elac BS 73 $550

The Elac BS 73 could be a truly great speaker, but its lack of verve and subtle dynamics prevents it from being a big hit in the mid-priced bookshelf speaker category.

First impressions from meeting are quite good. The dirty blues guitars of the composition The Terrible Operation by Hot Tuna are presented juicily and in detail, the low frequencies are quite weighty. The drums on Green Day's "Hitchin' A Ride" are quite convincing, although we would have liked a slightly more energetic and upbeat sound.

The BS 73s themselves play quite well. They are not characterized by rigidity, the emitters are perfectly matched. However, compared to competitors, the dynamics are limited, the treble is not as soft as other speakers, and the dense sound lacks refinement.

The Elac speakers fail to provide breathing space for the brass and strings on John Williams' Hymn To The Fallen, and the soul-stirring melody doesn't touch as much as on other occasions. Epos K1 (Elac's closest competitors, priced at $700) are inferior in weight and bass depth, but they have a much more lively and open sound. The Epos' instruments are more detailed, and the treble is more sonorous and joyful.

BS 73 fails to fully release the potential energy contained in them and reveal its dynamic range, and the heavy bass lacks mobility and energy. As a result, the music lacks inspiration and drive. In addition, I would like a little more purity of sound - the contours of the notes are somewhat blurred.

We recommend warming up the speakers for at least a few hours before listening, as they are especially cumbersome right out of the box. In addition, they require careful selection of the system: for example, the mobility and full-bloodedness of the excellent Rega Brio-R amplifier will significantly enliven the sound of the BS 73.

Elac has a minimalist design and only two finishes - white and black. The workmanship is excellent and the smooth finish is attached properly. The speakers with their entire appearance emphasize a successful investment of your funds.

If you are concerned about space in the room, then the BS 73 are quite compact; The 15-centimeter midrange/woofer occupies almost the entire width of the cabinet. They will not dominate in a small room. The protruding one-inch soft dome tweeter is not protected by anything, so be careful with it. It could use a grille to prevent accidental touches.

Elac speakers are in very strong company. They have an affordable price, just slightly above the budget category limit - however, the wonderful Award winners, the B&W 685 S2, are not much more expensive. The Elacs aren't that bad, but they lack the purity and precision to compete head-to-head with the class leaders.

Grade: 3

PROS: Dense, weighty sound; high detail; construction and finishing; compactness; price

CONS: Lacks drive, sophistication and verve; not the best openness and dynamics

VERDICT: Not bad, but not very inspiring speakers

Figures and facts

  • Power: 70 W
  • Sensitivity: 87.5 dB
  • Resistance: 4 ohms
  • Dual cable connection: No
  • Finish options: 2
  • Dimensions (H×W×D): 30×18×27 cm
  • Weight: 5 kg

Epos K1 $700

Epos K1 bookshelf speakers are ideal for buyers with a limited budget and a small room who dream of high-quality sound. For their price they are very good.

The K1 has many strengths: a tight and lively sound, high detail and such an energetic and dynamic approach that you won't even notice how you start tapping your feet and snapping your fingers to the beat of the song. The soft and weighty sound is very pleasant to listen to.

We love the tonal balance of these speakers. The horns on Quincy Jones' Blues In The Night aren't harsh; the bassline in the White Stripes' Seven Nation Army doesn't turn into a lumbering monster.

The K1's sound quality matches its specs and price range; They're not as precise, transparent or powerful as the class leaders, but they're very enjoyable. However, complex arrangements easily confuse them. They lack the conviction and sophistication to fully capture the grandiose dynamic shifts of Hans Zimmer's The Dark Knight score, and the voices lack clarity and nuance.

However, do not forget that K1s cost only $700. The award-winning B&W 685 S2 speakers are superior in precision and verve, but at a lower price. The Cabasse MT32 Antigua ($550) has a wider, more spacious music stage, but the K1's is more focused and better suited to small spaces; in large rooms they can get lost.

The design of Epos K1 is simplicity incarnate. There is nothing superfluous on the smooth white finish of the front panel - no fasteners, no logo. The drivers (an inch tweeter and a 15-centimeter midrange/woofer) are just as simple: completely black, without fastenings or visual accents.

The minimalist design will have many fans, but others will find it too strict. Next to the spectacular Triangle Esprit Titus EZ and B&W 685 S2, these speakers seem too inexpressive. However, their workmanship is excellent: smooth ribs, strong housings and terminals for two-cable connections. You can also buy the K1 in black, with plans to release it in natural veneer later. Magnetic grilles will cost you $80 a pair.

K1 has an interesting trick up its sleeve: they can be turned into active ones. Once the bolts are removed, you can remove the rear cover and replace the passive crossover with an Active-K module (this option will be available later this year).

Of course, for almost the same price you can get the excellent B&W 685 S2. But in some cases Epos K1 will be a better option. They don't have the most exciting sound, but they're worth getting to know.

Grade: 4

PROS: Tight and lively sound; detail and dynamics; soft approach; design; price

CONS: Competitors have more impressive, detailed and powerful sound

VERDICT: Not the most musical or exciting, but overall very good

Focal Aria 905 $915

If you're looking for serious sound for serious money, the Focal Aria 905 is exactly what you need. They have the rare ability to flawlessly recreate every element of a musical canvas.

Focal's clear, crisp, and precise sound never fails to delight. High detail meets relentless control.

The attack and decay of each note is impeccably precise. The staccato electronic drum beats in Radiohead's 15 Step are perfectly orchestrated and hit the mark; The Aria 905 skillfully handles the transition to softer, more melodic guitar chords. The ringing xylophone in Alt-J's "Ms" sounds soft, but at the same time sharp, and the elastic bass line fits neatly into the lively and moving rhythm.

Focal are ruthlessly rational: they know exactly how each instrument should sound, how to convey the subtlest nuances of voice and dynamics, and how tightly to control the rhythmic structure. We just want them to allow themselves to relax and have fun.

Compared to the boundless power and cheerful energy of the B&W 685 S2, these speakers seem too serious and reserved. Award B&W holders happily respond to any music offered to them; they aren't shy about bringing out the muddiest, creakiest textures of the bass guitar. The nasal tone of Stevie Nicks' voice on Focal's You Can't Fix This is politely airbrushed out; B&W reproduce this closer to the original.

Placing the speakers close to the wall gives the sound the weight it needs. Focal's maturity really appeals to us, but it lacks a little heart and emotion to be truly exciting.

Focal speakers are designed using different materials - wood, glass, leather and metal. They fit together flawlessly, the strong and reliable construction highlighting how much work has gone into the price. You can choose from a glossy black finish or a walnut finish.

Some may find the design too cluttered, especially next to the simpler and more elegant designs of the Triangle Esprit Titus EZ or B&W 685 S2. Focal's signature concave dome tweeter sets the speaker apart from others; The 13cm flax cone ensures precise sound.

We have some complaints about the finish: Blu-Tack adhesive, which we often use to mount speakers on stands, easily sticks to the leather bottom, and the glass top attracts fingerprints.

Focal has all the right ingredients, all they're missing is some heat and zest. Persuasiveness and competence are very serious virtues, and for some they are the most important; But we prefer speakers that make playing music as enjoyable as we enjoy listening to it. Aria 905 sometimes needs to loosen its self-control a little.

Tannoy Revolution XT 6 $1250

When a renowned manufacturer revamps one of its most successful lines, we're both thrilled and apprehensive.

Everyone expects a lot from the Tannoy Revolution XT line. Several models from the original Revolution series have won awards, and the excitement surrounding the release of its update makes sense. The XT 6 was the first to come under our scalpel, and we are more than pleased with the result.

The smooth piano chords and wailing violins of the XT 6's The Imitation Game soundtrack are incredibly realistic. Speakers are distinguished by speed and mobility. Every note sounds precise and decisive, whether it's a synth-heavy Nine Inch Nails track or Björk's exotic vocal exercises.

Tannoy has a very wide music scene, with plenty of room for every instrument to breathe. Details are clear and well-developed, midrange is extremely smooth and expressive.

However, we would like more weight and power. The XT 6's sound is a bit thin; This is good for movement and rhythm, but does not create rich, textural detail. Competitors have a more energetic and full-blooded sound, and are more pleasant to listen to.

The pulsating bassline in Sbtrkt's "Wildfire" hits the beat right, but it's not as deep or textured as we'd like. The booming and dirty bass in the song Killing Strangers by Marilyn Manson does not make as strong an impression as we would like. The $660 B&W 685 S2 has enough power and weight to demonstrate how it should be done.

If you place the Tannoy closer to the wall, their sound becomes thicker and more energetic. Try to avoid components that are prone to brightness if you do not want to further emphasize the stinginess in the character of the speakers.

XT 6 look very impressive. The body has a trapezoidal shape, designed to suppress standing waves inside it; it is strong and high quality. The letters “XT” stand for “extra technology” - additional technologies - and reflect changes in the new series.

The proprietary coaxial driver has been upgraded to improve the matching between the tweeter and midrange/woofer; but the most noticeable difference is the non-removable base. The bass reflex port supplies air into the gap between it and the main body, which is especially noticeable in cases where the speakers are placed on a table or shelf. If you want to install them on racks, they will look a little ridiculous. We would have preferred a more convenient solution.

The new Tannoys are definitely worth checking out in stores. Their light and smooth sound, as well as high detail, immediately captivates the listener; We'd just like a slightly stronger, richer sound.

Grade: 4

PROS: Crisp, clean, decisive sound; excellent mobility and accuracy; development of dynamics; design

CONS: Inferior to competitors in detail and persuasiveness; plinth

Triangle Esprit Titus EZ $900

Just look at that shiny tweeter horn. Watch and listen to this wonderful, captivating sound. Is it any surprise that we literally fell in love with the Esprit Titus EZ?

The song Gagarin by the Public Broadcasting Service duo performed by Triangle delights with boundless enthusiasm. The drums are precise and strong, the funky strings are lush and textured. The triumphant ringing of the fanfare emphasizes both the power of the dynamics and its subtle elaboration. Triangle flawlessly conveys the upbeat and catchy tone of the song; their energetic and sophisticated sound is incredibly attractive.

Given the modest dimensions of the Titus EZ cabinets, you shouldn't expect deep and thunderous bass from them. And in fact, they are not here. The scale, power and conviction of low frequencies can be found in the B&W 685 S2, but the Triangle has such a lively and cheerful sound that next to them even the energetic B&W seem somewhat ponderous.

These speakers have very accurate and transparent sound. The distorted atonal melody of Tom Waits' "Bad As Me" baffles much more expensive and larger competitors, but the compact EZ bookshelf gets the job done. The deafening roar of drums and the viscous blues melody in their performance are very natural, the part of each instrument is clearly distinguishable, and together they form a single and captivating whole.

The drama in Waits' voice is palpable; The Titus EZ transitions from sinister to cartoonish with ease, capturing every nuance and variation of the vocals with precision.

Triangle can only be reproached for excessive HF excitability. On first listen they are very sharp and aggressive; but after a few days of warming up, the highs noticeably soften, becoming richer and fuller, and better in tune with the rest of the frequency range. However, you should avoid choosing partners who sound overly bright or harsh.

Compact and high-quality speakers are incredibly cute. The walnut finish on our test sample makes a solid impression; Next to it, all other equivalent speakers look a little sloppy. If wood texture isn't your thing, you can get a model in glossy white or black finishes for $150 on top.

But the tweeter with a titanium dome and horn design attracts the most attention. It is not only bright and striking, but also very elegant, and the provocative protruding phasing core immediately sets it apart from all the others.

The midrange/bass driver is equipped with a new cellulose cone that provides a precise balance of lightness and rigidity. Movable and elastic Titus LFs confirm the validity of the approach.

Triangle Tituse isn't as easy to find in stores as more well-known brands, but it's worth looking hard for. The speakers are distinguished not only by their spectacular appearance, but also by sound quality that can deprive award winners of sleep - B&W 685 S2.

Let's sum it up

Winner B&W 685 S2 $660

The competitors were very strong and endowed with various advantages, but the B&W 685 S2 managed to keep the situation under control and maintain its position as a category leader

We must give credit to all the competitors: they performed remarkably well in today’s test. Each participant demonstrated their own approach to sound creation, and we were delighted to find that the mid-priced bookshelf speaker segment is filled with many great models.

Elac and Epos have a lot in common: compact dimensions, minimalistic design and low price. The Epos K1 wins the competition between these models. They are inferior to the Triangle in accuracy and meticulousness, but delight the ear with detail and excellent balance, and besides, they cost only $700.

Unfortunately, Elac BS 73 performed somewhat weaker. By themselves they sound quite good, but in comparison with others they lack energy and drive.

The Focal Aria 905 takes authenticity in every aspect of sound extremely seriously. The rhythmic structures are impeccably accurate, the bass is elastic, the highs are airy, but without unnecessary harshness. To receive the highest grade, they lack the ability to receive and bring pleasure. They could use more expressive dynamics and more punchy low frequencies.

If you prefer precision and control over spaciousness and scale of sound that is extremely pleasing to the ear, then Cabasse speakers are for you. They are characterized by softness and full-bloodedness, as well as fairly high detail; Their sound is invariably captivating, but the control of the bass is sometimes weak. Give these large speakers more space in the room, and they will delight you with the openness and scope of the music scene.

Tannoy speakers boast an excellent reputation, and the new XT 6 have not lost face. The bass could use a little more power and weight, but this spare approach allows for great mobility, precision and punchy attack. But we have not come to a consensus on permanent bases.

And finally, the two brightest stars of the test. The wonderful B&W 685 S2 has been a favorite of ours for over a year now, but the new Triangle Esprit Titus EZ has us delighted with its outstanding agility and eye-catching finish. If we could award victory to two models, we would do so, but the test rules do not allow this. Triangle is more capricious in terms of selecting partners, is $240 more expensive and is less common on sale - but we would recommend taking the time to search.

B&W are unrivaled in terms of dynamics, bass depth and punch, and their finesse and control allow them to create truly immersive sound. It’s very pleasant to listen to them; you want to return to them again and again. The 685 S2 rightfully retains the title of champion.

Speaker placement: pros and cons

Although these speakers are called bookshelf speakers, you shouldn't try to fit them between volumes of Game of Thrones if sound quality is important to you.

It is best to use special racks. Models like the award-winning Custom Design F104 Signature and Q Acoustics Concept 20 stands not only provide reliable and stylish support, but also reduce unwanted vibrations for clearer, more energetic sound.

If you think your speakers could use some bass reduction, more openness, or a little more punch, optimizing their placement in the room can help. There are no universal rules for this. Some speakers produce a fuller, more controlled sound when placed close to a wall, while others thrive in an open space with plenty of space around them. To achieve better results, don't be afraid to experiment.

Types of speaker systems

Audio systems consist of an acoustic design (casing) and built-in speakers . They can differ significantly from each other in many different characteristics. Therefore, there are several ways to classify acoustic systems (AS).

In accordance with the scope of use, speakers are divided into the following types:

  • speakers for a TV or home theater - provide high-quality sound for your favorite movies or listening to music, there are also models with karaoke and a disc player;
  • Speakers for a computer or laptop - consist of 1-2 mini-speakers that are installed next to the monitor;
  • car audio systems - necessary for listening to your favorite tracks on the road, in most cases these are active-type acoustics;
  • Concert speakers are the most expensive systems, consisting of several large speakers and characterized by high power and sound volume.

Depending on the installation method, all models can be divided into:

  • wall-mounted – on the back side of the speakers there is a mount for hanging;
  • floor-mounted – designed for installation on the floor or on a special stand, they are distinguished by their impressive size and weight, suitable for large rooms;
  • built-in - hidden in a wall, ceiling or furniture, merging with the interior of the room; a distinctive feature of this type is the absence of its own external frame;
  • ceiling - suitable for conference rooms and auditoriums, as they do not block the space and provide good sound anywhere in the room;
  • shelf ones - they are miniature in size, located next to a computer or TV, their power is enough for a room of about 20 m2.

Important!
The main difference between acoustic devices, which should be taken into account before purchasing, is the presence/absence of a built-in amplifier. Active type models are equipped with a built-in amplifier, so they are connected directly to the audio source. And passive audio systems require the additional purchase of an external amplifier, through which the speakers are connected to a TV or other sound-reproducing device.
