JBL Go 3 review: small speaker at a relatively low price

JBL is known for its large, powerful Bluetooth speakers, although the new JBL Go 3 is not one of them. This R2,500 device is as portable as it gets, easily fitting into any bag or even pocket.

This JBL speaker is completely waterproof, making it ideal for outdoor use. Of course, you shouldn't expect powerful bass here, but the lower frequencies are noticeable even at high volumes. I would like to have a more durable battery, but for the price the equipment is very good.

How long does it take to charge the speaker?

If the portable speaker is not equipped with an indicator, then you will have to check the charging duration yourself. There is no information about the full charge time, but experts recommend charging the speaker for 4 hours when turned off, and 6 hours when turned on. If the column is operating at full power, the process must be carried out continuously, since it discharges quickly in this state.

It is important to remember that when you first connect to power and connect the speaker, at least an hour should pass. Otherwise, the performance of the device may be degraded. In the worst case scenario, it may become unusable.

Advice! The device charges faster in a cool place when turned off through a stationary personal computer or laptop on a cooling pad.

Design and appearance

JBL Go 3 is available in five body colors: black, blue, grey, red and turquoise. With dimensions of 88x75x41 mm and a weight of 209 grams, it will easily fit into a bag. The rectangular case has rounded corners, although the lattice covering is made of fabric, and there are rubber “feet” on the underside.

The JBL logo is printed in large letters on the front panel, and a stylish sports lanyard is built into the left side. Next to it there is a USB-C connector for charging; the cable comes with the speaker.

An important advantage of the Go 3 is that it has an IP67 protection rating, which means that the speaker is completely protected from dust and water. Moreover, even immersion in water to a depth of 1 meter for 30 minutes will not cause harm.

Connecting Bluetooth speakers to your phone with the same functions

It will not be possible to combine different models with one function in this way.

The company foresaw this and released JBL Connect.

To connect two speaker systems (for example, Flip 4 and Xtreme 2) to a smartphone, you will have to proceed as follows:

  1. Download and install the official application on the device.
  2. Connect to a smartphone.
  3. Then turn on Bluetooth on the second device.
  4. Select one of the modes in the application:
  • When you select "Party", Jbl will play music in sync;
  • by selecting “Stereo”, they are synchronized into a pair that reproduces stereo sound.

Control and convenience

The top side of the JBL Go 3 has pause/play and volume keys. The first button, when pressed twice, switches the playing audio to the next track, although you cannot return to the previous one, which is not very convenient. On the right side are the power and Bluetooth connection keys.

There is no loudspeaker or speakerphone function, although this is to be expected at this price.

Using the application

When connected via Bluetooth, the device transmits much more information than just the audio stream. Therefore, a good way to find out the charge level of your JBL speaker is to look at it on your phone. To do this, you need to install one of the third-party utilities. All of them can be found in app stores. I recommend the lightweight and convenient BatON program, which can be downloaded from the Google Play Store.

It is installed on Android phones of various versions, even quite early ones. Here's what you need to do to install and use this application:

  • Go to Play Market.
  • Enter the name of this utility in the search there.
  • Select its icon - it shows bread - with the appropriate name, from the list of found applications.
  • Install and agree to the terms.
  • Now run the utility. Its menu is in English, but there are so few functions that there should be no problems with them.
  • You will see a list of devices that are within range or have previously been paired with the phone.
  • You can go to the Settings menu and mark the auto-check frequency there.

  • You can also enable the alert settings you want to see. Experiment with these settings to understand when you will see a message about charging or connecting a new device. The Closable parameter means whether you can close (“swipe away”) the alert, or whether it will hang there permanently.

  • You can remove a device that you do not need from the list by selecting the corresponding checkbox.
  • If the gadget is not connected, then press its pairing button and connect it to your phone.
  • You will see the percentage - you will be able to accurately find out the JBL charge.

As you can see, it is very easy to find out charging on JBL. Basically, the functions built into the column will help you. Other Chinese-made gadgets with a “no-name brand” may experience a lot of problems with non-working indicators or extended charging times. On JBL, if the device is working properly, the operation runs very smoothly. And the only thing you need is to install a third-party utility to find out the exact charge percentage. Otherwise, just use the built-in indicator lights. I hope this article answered all your questions.

Sound quality

Inside the JBL Go 3 there is a 1.5-inch driver with a power of 4.2 W. Of course, you shouldn't expect powerful bass from it, although the volume of the converter is quite high. Even on tracks with a lot of low frequencies, the Go 3 performs surprisingly well for its size.

This speaker cannot be faulted for its sound quality and power; moreover, there is no noticeable distortion at high volumes. The balance of the sound stage is also fine; the mids and highs sound quite clear and do not stand out too much. For such a compact speaker, its volume reaches impressive levels.

However, there is one problem - when JBL's Go 3 is placed on a flat surface, bass-heavy songs begin to distort. This problem is not in the speaker itself, but rather in the way the sound is reflected. To avoid this, it is better to place the device vertically or hang it by a cord, the main thing is that the back panel does not come into contact with another surface.

How to understand that the device is charged

Modern music gadgets are equipped with a battery charge indicator, which displays the process of power supply to the battery. In its normal state it is not lit and should not blink. When the battery is full, the indicator will turn green. If there is little charge left on the JBL Jibiel Bluetooth speaker, the indicator will light up red. Charging it is easy: you need to connect it to a desktop computer and wait until the red color changes to green.

If the gadget does not have an indicator, then it is more difficult to understand that the battery is full. To do this, you need to remember the start time of the charge and count 3-4 hours. As a rule, this time is enough for another 5 hours of continuous listening to loud music.

Interestingly, the station also charges your phone perfectly. To do this, you need to set the switch to PS and connect both devices with a cable. As soon as the phone starts charging, the corresponding icon will appear on it.

In general, charging a device such as a portable jbl speaker is not difficult and can be done in just a few hours, while continuing to enjoy your favorite music from the speaker at home or outdoors in the pool.

Ergonomics

You should be wondering how secure the speaker is, right? It is protected quite well from moisture and dust, about the same as you would with a Darth Vader mask against coronavirus. Protection class IP67 allows you to lightly spray (whatever you want) on the speaker and maybe sprinkle it with sand. Throwing into water, drowning or, God forbid, pouring water on it is prohibited! But if you are Chuck, then take the risk and drown, I think nothing will happen to her. There is no shock protection, so I don’t recommend throwing it at friends.

Read the dimensions on the official website or in our product card, they are minimal and allow you to stuff the column anywhere. In terms of size, this is an ordinary hi-fi player, so there will be no problems with transportation. The hook on the side will provide even more areas of application. In general, everything counts here.

Connection problems

There is nothing difficult about connecting a JBL speaker to a smartphone. However, some users find this procedure difficult. Almost all of them are associated with missing one of the points of the algorithm. However, we are ready to analyze the most common problems and offer solutions.

Problems and solutions

The phone does not see the column in the list of devices available for connection

Perhaps you forgot to activate Bluetooth on the speaker itself. You can perform the operation by pressing the corresponding button, which is located on the case. Next, you should repeat the connection algorithm.

Cable connection not working

Check the cable and device connectors for defects. In most cases, it is abrasions and chips that cause the interface to stop working correctly.

Music does not play after successful connection

Check the volume level on your phone and speaker. Oddly enough, many users simply forget to increase the level on JBL, which makes them think that playback is not working.

Frequent connection interruptions occur

The main reasons why breaks occur are: • Outdated version of Bluetooth. • Location of devices at a long distance (more than 10 meters). • Obstacles between devices. • Low battery level. Make sure there is nothing preventing the JBL from connecting to your phone smoothly. Reboot each device if necessary.

How to setup

Many questions concern how to set up the JBL Charge 1 or other models. To do this, you can use two ways:

  1. Built-in smartphone capabilities. The easiest way is to connect the device to a mobile device and use one of the existing applications (music players). At the same time, you can add effects, change the volume, adjust frequencies, etc.
  2. Additional applications. Here you can connect JBL and use third-party programs. Alternatively, it could be a regular Music Player or a special application. In the latter case, you can use JBL PARTYBOX, JBL Music and other specialized software. With its help, you can make the necessary settings regarding music and other features.

Are there any speaker models for USB flash drives?

As noted, the original JBL speaker does not see the flash drive due to the lack of the necessary software, and it will not be possible to turn on music this way. But there are many copies of such devices available in the market that support direct music playback from USB storage. This is due to the presence of another motherboard that has full software. In this case, you can format the USB drive in FAT32, record tracks and connect the device to the socket. After this, the device is automatically detected. All you have to do is turn on the speaker and listen to previously recorded music. But we note that even among the Chinese versions, not everyone has this opportunity.

Ports on Jbl speakers

During its work, the Jbl company has released a variety of acoustic devices with different purposes. The set of interfaces in the models differs in the following factors:

  • device size;
  • battery capacity;
  • degree of moisture protection;
  • functionality.

The speakers use the following ports and connectors:

1. Mini-jack jack (3.5 mm) for connecting to the speaker system via the AUX cord of devices (phones, laptops, computers or players) not equipped with Bluetooth, or in case of its malfunction.

This port is also used when the sound quality is insufficient when connected to Bluetooth.

The jack cannot be used to connect wired headphones.

2. Type-C and microUSB ports for charging batteries of autonomous acoustic devices, which are also used for updating software or flashing firmware in case of malfunctions.

3. Type-A port, which allows you to charge the battery of miniature devices (players, phones, tablets) in Power Bank mode, and is also used to connect flash drives in some models.

Miniature speakers are equipped with only two connectors, for charging the battery and connecting the AUX cable, but in audio systems for parties you can also find:

  • RCA connectors for classic stereo sound transmission;
  • special sockets for connecting a microphone and guitar.

conclusions

Why didn't such an advanced company as Jibiel make the USB port multifunctional? After all, on Chinese copies, not only the speakers are loaded through it, but you can also insert a flash drive.

To connect: To charge the battery of the speaker system or connect another device, you will need a cable that will signal to the user that the rubber plug is open; the gadget should not be placed near water.

The connected flash drive is invisible, and the portable device, due to the open rubber cap, can be damaged if moisture gets inside.

The user is advised to use wired connections only in rare cases. It is best to download music to your smartphone in advance and only connect a flash drive if there is a lack of memory.

What difficulties may arise

There are usually no connection issues as long as you use the right cables and plug them into the correct compartments on your smartphone, laptop, or other computing device. Difficulties arise when connecting a flash card to an IBL speaker through additional equipment, since if the wire is deformed or the device is insufficiently charged, the information from the card will not be read. As a result, you will not be able to listen to music or other audio files.

Additionally, if the user wishes to listen to music in the pool using the IBL, additional space will be required to prevent water from entering the equipment. So, if you choose a laptop or tablet as an additional device for reading information from the card, you will need to take care of a long water-repellent thread or store it somewhere while swimming. Therefore, the manufacturer recommends in this case to use Bluetooth and listen to music directly by connecting devices through this network.

Reference! Additionally, the device may not recognize the network due to physical damage, software failure due to improper uninstallation in the past, disabled USB ports, and a faulty flash card.

Smartphone requirements

Before connecting Bluetooth on your phone to a JBL speaker or using a wired connection, you need to understand whether your smartphone meets the stated requirements. Here do the following checks:

  1. Make sure your smartphone has Bluetooth and is working.
  2. For a wired connection, an AUX connector is required. If you are using USB Type C, difficulties may arise and you will need to connect an adapter.

Otherwise, there are no strict requirements, and JBL itself can be successfully connected to phones running Android or iOS.
