Just what you need: review of LG XBoom AI ThinQ with “Alice” and Meridian sound

Until a certain point, Yandex.Station was the only solution for those who wanted a smart speaker with Alice inside. And in general, “Station” for ten thousand rubles is an excellent choice: good sound, it can show video, fortunately it has HDMI, and it also has a very cool microphone system.

It turns out that the “Station” is a kind of uncompromising device. I would buy it for myself if Yandex.Music were my main streaming service. But no. I use Deezer and hope to switch to Spotify if the rumors about its launch turn out to be true. There are many reasons for this, the discussion of which is not the topic of this text.

But the list of devices with Alice support is gradually increasing. Very cheap ones like Irbis or DexP and even a portable speaker Elari have appeared:

But I was expecting something else. When will a speaker with “Alice” and good sound appear? Yes, “Station” has it quite well, but nothing more. And you understand this when you put “Station” next to HomePod. And even if it costs 2.5 times more, there’s a stupid Siri living inside that can’t speak Russian. But she plays very cool - Apple should definitely be praised for this.

So I thought: make a speaker with the price of the “Station”, but without HDMI with all the ensuing consequences and give me cool sound! And here LG comes onto the scene with the company’s characteristic long and intricate name XBoom AI ThinQ. It costs exactly the same as “Station”: 9990 rubles.

The main thing about this speaker is that Meridian, a company known for its high-quality acoustics, is responsible for the sound. This is available in Jaguar, Land Rover, British Airways and, in fact, LG Electronics.

Background

The column was shown at CES 2022 in Las Vegas. On the global market, it is sold under the control of Google Assistant, and your favorite music service can be used as a streaming platform.

For example, Tidal. Its main feature is lossless music playback. It is for this service that support for Hi-Res audio at 24 bit/96 kHz in the speaker is announced.

LG XBoom AI ThinQ also received Chromecast - a kind of analogue of AirPlay, with which you can transfer sound to a speaker. The throughput of this technology is much higher than that of Bluetooth, so the speaker is more suitable for fans of lossless formats than its analogues.

Sound Features

The main character here is “Alice”. And, accordingly, you can listen to music here either through Yandex.Music or via Bluetooth. And each method has its drawbacks: this speaker will not give you lossless sound.

But it’s worth emphasizing that with the arrival of XBoom AI ThinQ on the Russian market, it became cheaper: if in Europe it costs 199 € (about 14.5 thousand rubles), then the Russian version will cost 10 thousand rubles.

And besides, you can have as much support for different codecs and data transmission systems as you like, but if the acoustics are initially lousy, then the sound will be appropriate. Therefore, I do not believe that the listed localization features are disadvantages of the speaker.

Because of this, we approach the tests directly.

Sound

I installed an LG speaker in our kitchen. It stands right side by side with the “Station”. I configured them so that LG responds to Yandex, and Station responds to Alice. This is convenient for comparing sounds.

And the first thing I want to highlight is that both devices are equally demanding regarding where you listen to music from. If you listen from behind, the sound will be slightly muffled, because not all frequencies will go in your direction. If you listen directly in front of it, the sound will be much brighter. The thing is that there is only one speaker and one tweeter. Power - 30 W.

Also note the bass. Compared to “Station”, LG sounds great. This is expressed not only in the vibrations transmitted to the massive tabletop, but in the way the bass guitar or bass synth stands out in the overall sound picture. And the speaker is worth praising for this: the “Station” bass wanders around somewhere, hums a little and overall doesn’t sound very good.

Third - the top. They are really bright here. I can’t stand it when they describe the sound with all sorts of epithets, calling it “bright”, “rounded”, “smooth”, “sandy” and that’s all. But there’s no other epithet for this: the sound is really bright. Clearly, Meridian did a great job.

But what I didn’t like about the sound was the middle. Beginning sound engineers have a habit of turning down the midrange slightly. It may seem that this way the sound becomes more modern. The same thing happened here: the middle is gone, and everything that is there is gone.

I love listening to rock. My favorite band is Foo Fighters. And so the speaker loses with it: the guitars playing the rhythm just sound very quiet and the basis of the band’s sound disappears.

But if you turn on some drum and bass, then everything is okay. The main thing is that the mix is good and the bass does not conflict with the kick drum.

Double bass-oriented jazz also plays well. For example, Gregory Porter's 1960 song What? It sounds very decent on the speaker.

But you should understand that the speaker is very demanding on the quality of the mix. If you play 2Pac feat. Talent - Changes, then the hi-hat will hit your ears very hard.

Compared to LG, “Station” sounds much worse: its lows are not so low and velvety, its highs are not so bright. Things are better in the middle. But overall the sound quality of LG is much higher. And it's louder than "Station". Our editor-in-chief Sasha Pobyvanets happily found out about this and asked Yandex to include “Russian rap” (directly through the “e”). It’s good that the Assai group got involved.
