Van den Hul MC D 352 Hybrid

The D 352 Hybrid was created by van den Hul for those applications where it is important to ensure minimal signal transmission losses while staying within budget. In terms of manufacturing technology, it is practically no different from the Royal Jade Hybrid described above - the same thin (0.15 mm) conductors made of OFC copper with an ordered structure, a shell made of linearly structured carbon LSC, and all this is packaged in Hulflex polymer insulation, which performs at the same time the function of external protection. The differences are as follows: to minimize losses, the cores from which the conductors are twisted are coated with pure silver, and their number is increased to 296. Thus, the D 352 Hybrid has a much larger cross-section (2 x 5.2 mm2) and provides half the current resistance at the same length. To terminate cable terminals, it is advisable to use Van den Hul universal banana connectors. These are exactly the ones that were installed on the cable sent to us for testing.

Frankly, before listening, we thought that this cable would not be able to surprise us with anything after the Royal Jade Hybrid, but after the first seconds we realized that we were wrong. The 352 revealed a new side to our test system - it produced a very clean, melodious and at the same time exciting, driving sound, in which there was no hint of tightness. The upper middle was conveyed surprisingly freely and in detail. The resolution at the very top has deteriorated slightly, but this is even beneficial - playback is no longer as analytical and pedantic as before. The high bass sounded more expressive. The drums and all bass instruments turned out to be more recognizable and alive. And in the lowest register there was complete order. If your system produces technically correct sound that does not need any correction, this is the cable you should take a closer look at. With it, the “AC + amplifier” combination will certainly sound more natural, more articulate and emotional. But it doesn’t make much sense to include such a cable in an inexpensive complex.

... and don’t forget in any case: Van den Hul cables are sold several times more than they are produced.

Only twice in my life have I seen counterfeit audio cables. For the first time, in the late nineties, on the Moscow radio market, a “serious audiophile” for honest money offered an interconnect cable from the AudioQuest company, then super popular in audiophile circles, at a price three times less than that of official sellers. Seeing parodies of “snakes”* neatly laid out on shabby newspaper back then was funny and a little insulting for the manufacturer.

The second case was sadder, since the happy owner of “a real Van den Hul’s “Fest” for a hundred dollars” flatly refused to believe that he had a fake in his system. I agree that my statements that the cable was too dense to the touch and its color was too yellow** looked wild and snobbery to an uninitiated person. For those in doubt, I suggest you try any den Hul cables by touch yourself, believe me, they are unconditionally recognizable. The same applies to the color palette of dyes of the material from which the outer sheaths of the cables are made.

Having dealt with the fakes, let's take on the real Van den Hul, which has been delivered to Minsk for several months now and costs money from official sellers quite comparable to Europe, not to mention Russia.

For listening, viewing and feeling, three Van Den Hul analog interconnect cables, 0.8 meters long, are offered, paired with a pair of Van Den Hul Clearline entry-level speaker cables, 2.5 meters each. The ends of the speaker cables were stripped (10 - 15 millimeters) and clamped directly with connectors installed on the equipment, without additional connectors.

The listening was carried out in a standard living room with an area of 16 sq.m., densely packed with furniture. The source of the signal was a Technics SL-PG3 CD player, and the Technics SA-PX750 cinema receiver operating in stereo mode acted as an amplifier. Jamo 28 loudspeakers were installed on Empire stands with a height of 90 centimeters.

The following compositions were used as test material: 1. “Time” Pink Floyd “Dark Side of the Moon”, 1973 Capitol 2. “Money” Pink Floyd “Dark Side of the Moon”, 1973 Capitol 3. “Woman from Tokyo” Deep Purple, “Who Do We Think We Are”, 1973, Warner Bros 4. “Rat bat blue” Deep Purple, “Who Do We Think We Are”, 1973, Warner Bros 5. “One time” King Crimson “THRAK”, 1995, Virgin Records 6. “Sex, sleep, eat, drink, dream” King Crimson “THRAK”, 1995, Virgin Records

The choice of test equipment and material was determined, first of all, by the desire to establish the feasibility of using entry-level Hi-Fi equipment (up to a thousand dollars) and cables costing significantly more than recommended for such systems. From this point of view, it becomes logical to choose material that is difficult to reproduce, but well studied by listeners.

The next “super task” was to find out the individual characteristics of various cables from the same manufacturer, of similar design and located in neighboring price categories.

"The Name"

The Name interconnect cable costs about a hundred dollars. Silver-plated copper was used as a conductor and screen braid. Sand colored insulation. It is positioned by the manufacturer as a universal audio-video cable, coordinated for transmission, depending on the connector, of a digital, analog or television signal.

During listening, The Name proved to be a universal cable with a neutral, dynamic sound, very energetic, but quite adequately conveying the features of Alan Parsons' sound engineering in compositions 1, 2. In compositions 3, 4, Jon Lord's keyboards were heard, completely ignored by the standard cables that worked before in system. In compositions 5 and 6, I was pleased with the weighty and solid bass guitar, but the signature King Crimson “wall of sound”*** did not work out, most likely due to the somewhat excessive cable resolution for this set of equipment.

" D -300
III Hybrid "
Hybrid interconnect cable The D-300 III Hybrid costs about one hundred and fifty dollars. Silver-plated copper is used as a conductor and screen braid, directly below the screen there is a layer of linearly structured carbon, a unique material used as a conductor only by Van Den Hul. Brown insulation. The cable is very thin and flexible.

In compositions 1 and 2, the bass foundation was felt almost physically, “through the skin.” Quiet places and pauses appeared, playing an important, if not key place in the music of Pink Floyd of the 70s. In compositions 3 and 4, compared to the previous cable, a stage well organized in width appeared, Ian Gillan's vocal parts gained weight and volume. In compositions 5 and 6, dynamic contrasts are clearly drawn, and at high volumes the already mentioned “wall of sound” effect appears.

Combination
Hybrid
Combination Hybrid interconnect cable costs about two hundred and twenty dollars. An amorphous alloy of copper, zinc and silver with the addition of linearly structured carbon was used as a conductor. Golden insulation. The cable is of medium flexibility and thickness. Thanks to innovations in the production of the conductor, the company declares it to be an exclusively music cable.

In all the compositions we listened to, especially in compositions 1 and 2, the sound gained perspective, the space of the stage increased significantly, and there was more air. On the other hand, the sound has become much more comfortable than with previous cables, perhaps this is due to a decrease in dynamics in the upper middle of the frequency range, but the low level of test equipment prevented us from establishing this accurately.

Conclusions.

The
Name
is a “workhorse”, a multi-station operator on the one hand, a ruthless analyst on the other;
A serious cable that is absolutely adequate to the system. D -300 III Hybrid
- emphasizes the emotional component of music; for lovers of background music it is definitely contraindicated, and even harmful (and this with such a “digital” name).

Combination
Hybrid
is a very balanced cable. Everything in moderation – detail, dynamics, emotions. As a pleasant bonus - comfortable, non-fatiguing sound.

* The names of AudioQuest cables are traditionally borrowed from the cat and snake family. ** Well, people in Southeast Asia love rich colors! *** Wall of sound is a term and sound technique coined by American producer and sound engineer Phil Spector. The effect is achieved by leveling out the frequency characteristics of the sounding instruments, flattening the depth of the sound stage and “pushing” the vocals behind the instrumental parts.
