Compared to the leaders, Arcam seems a little more dispassionate.   The bassline in Drake's "Underground Kings" is driven, tight, and controlled; details and textures increase the penetration of sound and subtlety of elaboration.

  It was this bass line that demonstrated the low rhythmicity of the Technics SU-C700; here everything is fine with her. Melody and accompaniment merge into a single and harmonious whole.

  Large VU meters take up a fair portion of the front panel; when the amplifier is turned on, they are illuminated, the brightness of the illumination can be changed. The construction and finish of the SU-C700 is impeccable and the attention to detail is admirable.

  For this Technics model, a Class D amplifier circuit was chosen - not the most common for this price segment, but suitable for a compact case. As a result, the device does not get too hot during operation, but requires a more careful selection of speakers.

  To optimize sound, a Load Adaptive Phase Calibration (LAPC) function was developed. When enabled, the SU-C700 sends a test signal to the speakers to determine their electrical characteristics and adjusts output accordingly.

  We recommend dedicating part of your setup time to this procedure: you will hear the difference with your own ears - when you turn on LAPC, the sound becomes denser.

  A significant difference between the SU-C700 and competitors in the price category is the built-in DAC and a large number of digital inputs. In the list of analogues there is only one linear and one for the MM phono stage; There are many more digital ones - three coaxial, optical and USB type B port.

  Unfortunately, that's where the good news ends. Technics' sound is seriously lacking in energy; due to weak rhythmic drive, the music turns out to be illegible and disorganized. The catchy compositions lack enthusiasm, and the more tender ones sound too dull and dull.

  No genre of music aroused enthusiasm from this amplifier. The upbeat intro to the song Mountain Sound by Of Monsters and Men doesn't make any serious impression on the listener due to the dull dynamics of the amplifier.

  The instruments lack depth and texture, and the voices are remarkably inexpressive. The NAD D3020, priced at just $450, is much more informative and organized.

  Drake's Underground Kings highlights the SU-C700's lack of rhythm. The looping melody is conveyed “dirty” and separate from the bass line on which it is built, and the vocals are not too tied to the instrumental accompaniment.

  We tried connecting to analog and digital inputs and tested the amplifier with a variety of speakers, including the original Technics SB-C700, and headphones, but the results were disappointing.

  Hopes for the revival of the Technics brand were so high that the poor quality is even more disappointing. The SU-C700 is not an amplifier that we would recommend to a buyer.

  The results of technological change are sometimes unpredictable. Sometimes a company manages to find a real gem that takes its stock to unprecedented heights. But sometimes models that have high hopes fail to live up to them.

  We had high hopes that the Technics SU-C700 would fall into the first category, but it didn't live up to general expectations. An amplifier with three times the modest price surpasses it in all aspects of sound. The design and attention to detail deserve respect, but for us it's not the looks that matter, but the sound quality, and we have to give it a two.

  Fortunately, the rest of the test participants did not upset us. For Arcam A39, which we met only a month ago, this was the first Group test. Of course, our opinion about it did not have time to change, but it was interesting to compare it with other strong models. It retained its four stars, being slightly inferior to the leaders in terms of elaboration of the smallest details and microdynamics.

  Arcam's main competitor is the Roksan K3, which is $100 cheaper and has a similar character: both have powerful and large sound and a love for high volume. Roksan records the quietest moments of music better and is slightly superior to Arcam in terms of detail. Considering the lower price, these features earn the K3 top marks.

  However, with all the advantages of the Roksan, the best amplifier in this price category remains the Rega Elicit-R. A worthy winner of the 2014 award, it boasts higher quality in all respects, and even small differences from competitors add up to a noticeable advantage.

  This is the most expensive participant in the test, and this fact cannot be ignored; but if you need the best sound, the Rega Elicit-R will provide it to you to the fullest extent.
