How to connect a flash drive to a Jbl speaker: how to set up a speaker with a flash drive

How to connect a flash drive

Jbl portable Bluetooth speakers, which are waterproof, have a Type A port for charging devices only and cannot be used to connect a USB storage device.

Attention! If the portable speaker can read files written on a formatted flash drive connected to a USB port, it is a Chinese counterfeit (see table below).

To connect a flash drive to an American brand Bluetooth speaker, the user will need an intermediate device.

Possible options:

  • insert the flash drive into the USB connector of your computer or laptop, then use the AUX cable to connect it to the gadget;
  • do the same, but connect your devices to the speaker via a Bluetooth connection.

The flash drive connects to most tablets and smartphones via an OTG adapter, which can be supplied as standard or purchased separately.

Link. OTG (On-The-Go) is a technology that allows two USB devices to connect to each other without using a personal computer.

We will look at connecting a flash drive to a Jbl Bluetooth speaker using an example of using a smartphone running Android and a microUSB input port as a device adapter:

  • Activate the data function on your phone.
  • A USB flash drive with a capacity of 16GB or less will be formatted as FAT32.
  • The required musical composition is recorded on the gadget.
  • An OTG adapter with a microUSB connector is connected to the device, and a flash drive is connected to the second type A connector.
  • To access the information contained in the gadget, the file manager is launched.
  • The smartphone is synchronized via Bluetooth with the speaker.
  • The MP3 player will open, with the connected device listed as the source of the music files.
  • Listen to songs on Jbl portable Bluetooth speakers.

How to enable with original device

First, let's look at whether the JBL speaker works from a flash drive, if you use a workaround - connect the flash drive via a smartphone, and then transfer the information to the device in question.

The algorithm of actions is as follows:

  • Download the USB OTG Checker app to check if your smartphone supports this feature.
  • Install the application and expand it using the "Open" button on the main page.
  • Click "Test USB OTG Storage". If a positive message is displayed, it means that the JBL speaker can be played from a USB storage device via a mobile device. Let us immediately note that iPhones with iOS 13 and later do not provide this option.
  • Buy the cable needed to power up the USB drive. You will need USB-OTG for Android smartphones or Lightning-USB-C for iPhones with iOS up to 13.
  • Take a flash drive up to 16 GB in size and format it to FAT32. To do this, you can use the built-in functions of your PC/laptop. Insert the drive into the slot and wait for it to be recognized, right-click the drive that appears and select Format from the list. Select the Fat32 file system and start the process.

  • Before activating the ZhBL speaker via a flash drive in your phone, record music on the unit.
  • We connect the OTG cable to the smartphone, then insert the drive. Make sure your phone can see it.
  • Go to the Bluetooth section and find your device. Open your music player and select the disc as your source. After that, all that remains is to turn on the music and make sure that everything is working properly.

How to enable a non-original model

When it comes to the question of whether it is possible to insert a flash drive into a JBL speaker if it is not original, everything is simpler. Numerous Chinese devices allow you to directly connect a USB drive and listen to music. To do this you need to do the following:

  1. The first thing to do is turn on the speaker.
  2. Open the cover under which the connectors are installed.
  3. Insert your music storage device into the USB port.
  4. Wait for autoplay. If there are no results, turn off and turn on the external speaker.
  5. To play a new music track, use "-" and "+".

It is not difficult to understand how a JBL speaker with a flash drive works. The main thing is that a used Chinese device has such an option.

Instructions

To connect a USB storage device to a third-party JBL portable speaker:

  • To change the volume, press and hold the "+" and "-" buttons.
  • insert a flash drive with music;
  • open the plug with connectors (if any);
  • automatic playback should start in a few seconds;
  • if this does not happen, turn off and turn on the column again;
  • to change the musical composition, use the “-” and “+” buttons;
  • turn it on;

If the described method of connecting a flash drive does not help, most likely you have an original device that does not support this function. You can connect a flash drive only using a smartphone:

  • start playing music.
  • connect a flash drive through it;
  • insert the OTG adapter into your mobile device;
  • synchronize your smartphone with the speaker;

A similar procedure can be done by connecting the speaker to a laptop into which a flash drive is inserted.

Ports on Jbl speakers

During its history, Jbl has produced many hearing aids that vary in purpose. The set of interfaces in the models differs according to the following factors:

  • device size;
  • battery capacity;
  • degree of moisture resistance;
  • functionality.

The speakers use the following ports and connectors:

1. Mini-jack connector (3.5 mm) for connecting devices (phones, laptops, computers or players) not equipped with Bluetooth to the speaker system via an AUX cable, or in case of a malfunction.

And this port is also used in case of poor sound quality when connected via bluetooth.

2. Type-C and microUSB ports for charging the batteries of stand-alone hearing aids, which are also used for updating software or firmware in case of malfunction.

3. Type A port, which allows you to charge the batteries of miniature devices (gamers, phones, tablets) in Power Bank mode, and is also used to connect flashes in some models.

Miniature speakers only have two ports for charging the battery and connecting the AUX cable, but in party audio systems you can also find:

  • RCA connectors for classic stereo sound;
  • special sockets for connecting a microphone and guitar.

The speaker is not suitable for inserting flash drives into it; this speaker connects to a phone, tablet, laptop, etc. You can also use an AUX cable if the device does not have bluetooth.

This is not a flash slot. It is for charging gadgets, this slot simply does not support flash cards

Turning on music on a jbl speaker via a flash drive

To organize the inclusion of a flash drive on the speaker, you will need to use additional devices. Thus, you can insert the flash card into your computer, laptop or tablet, and the USB cable of these devices is already connected to the IBL xtreme. This is a simple process that will bring 100% results. In another case, you will have to transfer the data from the flash card to the media and read the data for the column from it.

Attention! However, the manufacturer guarantees that IBL will read information from the USB drive. The device also has a microUSB connector, which allows you to use the memory card as a flash drive.

How to charge your JBL Bluetooth player

The good news for users is the fact that the speaker not only works for a long time without recharging, but also serves as a power bank for our mobile devices. By the way, the latest fourth model of JBL Charge is capable of storing up to 7 mAh. And when it runs out, you can charge it using the cable that was included in the included box along with paper instructions.

Cable included for JBL speaker

It is connected by a cable to the microUSB connector on the speaker and USB to a computer (like a flash drive) or charger.

Connecting the charging cable to the JBL speaker

What difficulties may arise

Difficulties arise due to the fact that in the process of playing music, instead of two objects (device and column), three are involved (device, column and flash drive), and the number of connections between devices increases.

When connecting the device to the speaker via a device that does not have built-in Bluetooth (for example, a personal computer), the following may be faulty:

  • port to a PC with a connected flash drive;
  • audio output to computer;
  • AUX cable with two mini-jacks for connecting a device or speaker system.
  • If you use a smartphone as an intermediate device, the following difficulties may arise:
  • break in the OTG adapter;
  • connector malfunction;
  • there is too much memory on the flash drive;
  • The flash drive is not detected due to an inappropriate file system format (NTFS, exFat);
  • the connectors on the unit itself or on the smartphone input are damaged;
  • The phone model cannot connect to the device without third-party software;
  • The device does not support OTG technology.

Why did the radio tape recorder stop reading the flash drive?

If you purchased music equipment in a store and then noticed that you can’t listen to music from a flash drive (or any other memory card), you can safely contact the store under warranty for repair work. But before that, do a simple check - take another flash drive and try to check it on the computer, and then insert it into the radio. If this does not cause normal operation of the radio, feel free to contact the warranty repair service. This way you can save yourself from unnecessary time and nerves. If the radio is not under warranty, you need to find out the reason why the mechanism stopped working:

  • the connector into which you insert the storage medium may have been damaged by careless movement;
  • perhaps poor-quality connections inside the radio failed, the system wiring came off;
  • The chip or board responsible for playing music from a flash drive or memory card could have failed;
  • It is also worth checking the operation of the radio in other modes (radio, discs) - perhaps the device does not work at all;
  • the cause may be a faulty flash drive with poor contact or a burnt-out control chip;
  • The problem may also be in the radio control buttons, which turn on playback from a memory source.

There is absolutely nothing else to break in these devices. Therefore, you will only have to investigate the problem options presented above. Of course, it is not always possible to fix the problem yourself. Current acoustic and reproducing equipment has a complex design and is unlikely to be repaired using a household soldering iron. Therefore, even if you have certain knowledge in the field of radio engineering, it is better to use the services of specialists and fix problems with the equipment in a service center. However, this is your radio and your money, so the decision is up to you.

How to fix

To detect and solve problems, the user:

  • you need to make sure that the speaker is in good condition (check the battery charge), the USB key and the intermediate device;
  • check for broken AUX cable, OTG adapter;
  • inspect connectors and plugs for mechanical damage;
  • replace damaged cables;
  • if the door is damaged, contact a workshop;
  • prepare the flash drive correctly;

  • determine whether the phone supports On-The-Go technology by installing the USB OTG Checker application;
  • If your model cannot automatically connect a USB drive to your phone from the Play Market, download the StickMount program.

Original JBL products

The original GiBiEl speakers do not have their own firmware and, as a result, direct connection of a flash drive to it is impossible. However, the connection can be organized using, for example, a smartphone.

  1. First of all, check if your device supports the OTG function and enable it.
    Read more: Enable OTG on Android

    Owners of iPhones running iOS 13 and higher have this option out of the box.

  2. Purchase a USB-OTG (Android) or Lightning-USB-C (iOS) cable and make sure it works.
  3. Take a flash drive with a capacity preferably no more than 16 GB and format it to the FAT32 file system.
    Read more: Formatting a flash drive in FAT32

Record the music you need onto the media. Connect the OTG cable to the phone and connect the prepared drive to it. Make sure that your smartphone recognizes it correctly. Connect to the speaker via Bluetooth.

Open the music player, where specify the connected flash drive as the file source.

Done – music from the drive will be played on the speaker.

conclusions

Why didn't such an advanced company as Jibiel make the USB port multifunctional? After all, on Chinese copies, not only the speakers are loaded through it, but you can also insert a flash drive.

To connect: To charge the battery of the speaker system or connect another device, you will need a cable that will signal to the user that the rubber plug is open; the gadget should not be placed near water.

The connected flash drive is invisible, and the portable device, due to the open rubber cap, can be damaged if moisture gets inside.

The user is advised to use wired connections only in rare cases. It is best to download music to your smartphone in advance and only connect a flash drive if there is a lack of memory.

Hello! Unfortunately, I have bad news for you. The fact is that you simply cannot switch tracks from a flash drive. for some reason, the developers did not provide this option and the tracks will be played exclusively sequentially. An obvious flaw on the part of the manufacturer, but nothing can be done about it. The only thing you can do is pause the playback. So, be careful when compiling your playlist.

Switch the track, hold play and press minus and voila everything switches

You can also switch tracks by double clicking on play.

Guest

Indeed, double-clicking switches the track to the next one, of course it’s also a pity that the manufacturer didn’t make it possible to switch tracks in front and back, but thanks for the hint, otherwise I thought it was impossible to switch at all

NewPal GS009

The small Chinese device looks more like a bright toy. However, despite such a frivolous appearance and quite affordable cost, it has good functionality.

First of all, this is the ability to work not only from a USB flash drive or memory card, but also from almost any smartphone - including versions on iOS.

It can also be used as a radio receiver, provides quite decent sound volume (at least 70 dB) and is available in several colors - from white to bright blue.

Peculiarities:

  • Bluetooth communication range: up to 15 m;
  • frequencies: 100–20000 Hz;
  • media: USB flash drive, TF/microSD memory card;
  • battery: 400 mAh, up to 4 hours of use;
  • sound power: 3 W;
  • weight: 165 g;
  • cost: 570 rub.

Jbl charge 3 connecting a flash drive

Which I consider to be almost the best portable speaker I've ever owned. However, it has two, for some very critical, disadvantages - its dimensions and weight. When you want to be light, Xtreme becomes a burden. However, JBL has something to offer here - a more compact and stylish Charge 3.

We’ll start our review of the JBL Charge 3 portable speaker by studying its characteristics and later take a closer look at the capabilities of the portable speaker.

Characteristics of the JBL Charge 3 portable speaker

:

  • two 50mm speakers
  • total power 10 W
  • playback frequencies: 65 - 20,000 Hz
  • signal-to-noise ratio >80 dB
  • Bluetooth 4.1
  • supported profiles: A2DP 1.3, AVRCP 1.5, HFP 1.6, HSP 1.2
  • transmission frequency 2.402 - 2.480 GHz
  • built-in microphone
  • moisture protection according to IPx7 standard
  • wireless connection to other JBL Connect devices
  • battery 6,000 mAh (22.2 W/h)
  • charging at current 5 V, 2 A
  • Dimensions: 213 x 87 x 88.5 mm
  • weight 800 grams

Available colors: black, gray, red, blue, turquoise.

At IFA 2016, other body colors were announced, brighter and more saturated. They should go on sale soon.

Equipment

The box for the device is quite large, with high-quality printing, but including a very modest package. Inside, in addition to the speaker itself, there was a Micro USB cable and a 5V and 2.3A power supply. The manufacturer also took care of adapters for various sockets and plugs.

There is no case or carrying strap, as there was in the same one. So we don’t linger, let’s move on.

Design

Among compact speakers from JBL, our version is the heaviest and largest, and in relation to it it is simply tiny.

Length Width Thickness Weight
JBL Xtreme 2112
JBL Charge 3 88,5
JBL Charge 2 185,2
JBL Flip 3

However, it occupies an intermediate position for a reason. It differs from the flagship “extreme”, perhaps, only in size and sound power, but there are many things that distinguish it from it: from the same dimensions to various kinds of features.

Most of the body area is covered with thick rubberized fabric, which should prevent water and other environmental nuisances from getting inside.

I have no doubts about the reliability of this material. It takes a lot of effort to rub or tear the fabric. But it seems to me that various kinds of stains can still remain on the body.

Nothing is said about dust protection. The standard assumes that it does not exist. However, I threw the speaker into the sand on the beach from a height of about 1.2 meters, sprinkled it with squeaks, drove it back and forth, and so on. After that, you go to the water, rinse it and Charge 3 looks like new. However, it is just sand. But it seems to me that various kinds of stains can still remain on the body. Therefore, do not spill juice or wine on the speaker.

Where there is no fabric, there is a rubberized body with a Soft-Touch effect. There are raised symbol buttons on the top side. It all looks stylish and is easily distinguishable to the touch, since the icons are quite large.

Only two keys are backlit (white or blue): power and JBL Connect.

At the bottom end there is a rubber stand, thanks to which the device stands securely on almost any surface.

Nearby there is a wide rubber plug with several valves to protect the connectors from leaks. We have in stock:

  • Micro USB port for charging the gadget itself
  • full-size USB for charging all other devices (smartphones, action cameras, etc.)
  • standard 3.5 mm audio output

There is nothing more to describe. Everything looks stylish, minimalistic and quite modern. Compared to the Charge 3, it looks a little outdated.

Connection

Connection with sound sources (there can be up to three of them at the same time) is quick and smooth. After the first pairing, the speaker will connect automatically in the future; you don’t need to do anything. The only thing is not to turn off Bluetooth on your smartphone or whatever you have as a source.

If anything, the device can also be connected via a cable with 3.5 mm plugs at both ends. It's strange that the kit didn't include the corresponding wire. Bluetooth transmission will have priority over a wired connection, which, in principle, fits perfectly into the company’s logic. Let me remind you that JBL has delved into wireless technology in recent years. I think this is correct.

In addition, as practice shows, playing music via Bluetooth has a better effect on the autonomy of the speaker. Surprising but true.

In addition, I liked the stability of the connection. Firstly, everything is fine with range. My gadget worked without problems at a distance of about five meters from the broadcast source, and at the same time there were two not very thin walls in the signal path. Secondly, I have never noticed any interruptions in communication. Yes, stuttering was present when several, for example, Wi-Fi networks appeared around and something was transmitted via Bluetooth. Therefore, it is better to avoid places that are excessively overloaded with wireless networks.

Like all the latest new products from the company, our hero is equipped with support for JBL Connect. This feature means that branded devices can be networked and play the same music at the same time.

Once connected, the volume control does not sync with the audio source. Simply put, we turn up the volume separately on the smartphone, and then add it separately on the speaker.

Moisture protection

Perhaps this is the coolest feature that personally caused me a truly childish delight. The IPx7 standard has been declared, which implies not just protection from moisture, but also immersion of the device.
